More about STOMP Out Hunger:

STOMP has made it its mission to partner with food banks across the country to STOMP Out Hunger. The show began its quest to reduce hunger in North America with a partnership with Philabundance, the Philadelphia region’s largest hunger relief organization, in December of 2007. The producers were looking for a way to give back to the community and with the timing of the holidays the partnership was a natural one. However, due to the current economic climate including high unemployment rates and state budget cuts, hunger organizations have seen an overwhelming demand for food assistance. As such, STOMP has dedicated itself to bringing attention to the heightened needs of food charities across the country all year round by sponsoring canned food drives and donating ticket proceeds in as many cities as possible. Cities in which STOMP has conducted a STOMP Out Hunger campaign include Philadelphia, PA,  Calgary, Canada, Peoria, IL, Detroit, MI, Toronto, Canada, Jacksonville, FL, Orlando, FL, Aurora, IL and Honolulu, HA, just to name a few.

April, 2012 – Young Stewards at the Palm Beach Zoo

West Palm Beach, FL, April 17, 2012 – Students from four area elementary schools will be exhibiting their achievements as “Young Stewards of the Environment”, a science learning initiative developed by the Palm Beach Zoo Education Division and funded by The Environmental Fund at the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. During the past six months, they have created, installed, observed, and documented projects that have had a direct impact on the environment. Their results will be shared with the public on Saturday, April 21st, at the annual Palm Beach Zoo “Party for the Planet” Earth Day Celebration. The time for the event is 11:00 a.m. in the Peggy S. Brown Pavilion on zoo grounds.

The four projects are:

Palmetto Elementary School – Students implemented a recycling effort at their school and put together video commercials with the theme, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recreate.” They plan to display their videos on the school district’s website in order to persuade others to recycle.

Berkshire Elementary School – The team measured student, class, and family water waste, and applied water-conserving efforts at home and at school. They wrote and are planning to perform a song at Party for the Planet to communicate to others how important water is. They also created posters to hang around their school telling others about their project. As a last effort, they are going to paint rain barrels to put in their school garden to help conserve water.

Hobe Sound Elementary School – Students measured estuary water quality, and the amount of water wasted at their school. They implemented water-conserving efforts at their school, and painted rain barrels to collect much-needed water for their school butterfly garden. They hope the rain barrels will communicate with and inspire the rest of the school and the larger community to join them in conserving water.

Pioneer Park Elementary School – Students turned their empty garden boxes into beautiful backyard habitats to encourage native butterflies and birds to make their home there. Students mapped out goals and came up with the design of the habitat. They hope to encourage other students and teachers to learn about native plants and animals so they can be sure to save Florida’s habitats for future generations.

The Young Stewards of the Environment program is a conservation education project that was created to focus on a limited number of fourth-grade students in four selected Title I elementary schools in Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Students participated in the selection of project that would improve the environment either at or near their school, such as xeriscaping landscaping or improving irrigation. Priority was given to projects that address water quality, quantity, conservation and/or preservation. Zoo educators worked with the schools to ensure that the project was relevant, manageable within the time frame, and had the potential for successful outcomes. A zoo education specialist served as an educator, project coach and mentor for each site. After studying the specific environmental challenges in the school sites or immediate area, zoo staff assisted the students in developing and implementing a plan of action. The students logged their research findings and mapped their progress over the course of the school year. They took photographs, created posters, wrote songs, and produced “public service announcements” on video to document their work. At the Party for the Planet, participating students will have the satisfaction of presenting their accomplishments to family and friends. The zoo will post the finished projects on its web site and participating schools will be asked to display them after Earth Day and into the following school year. Permanent signs will be placed at the project sites to commemorate the environmental stewardship of the participating schools and students as well as the generosity of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties.

For more information contact Claudia Harden at [email protected], (561) 214-1667. Photo ops of students with their science fair projects and the awards ceremony will be available.

April, 2012 – South Florida Science Museum Breaks Ground for Expansion

SOUTH FLORIDA SCIENCE MUSEUM BREAKS GROUND FOR EXPANSION

Public joins local VIPs and Museum leadership for free community celebration and groundbreaking

( West Palm Beach , FL )    Launching the South Florida Science Museum from good to great, Museum leadership and community leaders invited the general public to a free groundbreaking reception on April 5, 2012 at the Museum’s Dreher Park facility.  Featuring entertainment, refreshments, interactive science experiments and more, the celebration not only honored the Museum’s past 50 years as a beloved South Florida institution, it offered leadership an opportunity to unveil plans for the Museum’s new foundation for the next 50 years.

Earlier this year, the Palm Beach County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a $2.4 million grant for the Museum’s newly revised expansion plan.  Coupled with monies raised from the Museum’s staff and board members, the current $3 million in cash and pledges for the campaign is enough for the Museum to break ground on a 6,000-square-foot expansion and to renovate the current main exhibit spaces, according to Lew Crampton , South Florida Science Museum CEO.

“For more than 50 years, the South Florida Science Museum has inspired youth and visitors with hands-on, minds-on experiences,” said Lew Crampton, Museum CEO. “Today with more than 150,000 visitors per year and an additional 45,000 students being served by the Museum, we aim to redefine the way we think, learn and interact with science in our lives.  It’s important to note that the South Florida Science Museum is currently the second busiest science center in the country. This expansion will take the Museum from a good institution to a great one.  This community deserves an incredible science center and the time is right to move forward with this next step.”

The South Florida Science Museum is the only public museum for science, technology and natural history education in Palm Beach County .  The new Museum will feature state of the art, hands-on exhibitions, including a new travelling exhibition hall to showcase top new exhibits, an expanded aquarium, and an interactive Everglades Adventure.  The expansion project is targeted for completion in December 2013, and the Museum will remain open during construction.

“After hosting 5 million visitors, the pressing need for this project is clear,” continued Crampton. “As the leading cultural and educational resource in Palm Beach County devoted to science and technology, the current facilities are too cramped and worn.  Currently, we can’t even accommodate many really great traveling exhibits – we’re just too small.  And the demand for the museum is growing annually as the region grows with the addition of families.  Our community’s school children deserve a state-of-the-art facility to engage them in learning about science and technology, so essential to securing good jobs and assuring our nation’s future in an increasingly competitive world.”

According to Crampton, the Museum will launch a $1.5 million capital campaign over the next 18 months to add quality exhibits and new visitor amenities to the current expansion plans. Additional plans for the capital campaign include: a new permanent interactive exhibit featuring “Science on a Sphere”, an exploration of our world’s climate and natural environment with particular focus on our region’s specialty, the hurricane; an Everglades exhibit including aquatic tanks, an outdoor interpretive display and a simulated airboat ride; and a newly expanded Science and Nature path.

The groundbreaking celebration included presentations by County Commissioner Shelley Vana, City of West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio , high school student Sophie Gross, and Museum board chairman, Matt Lorentzen.  The Palm Beach Atlantic University dance ensemble performed and guests were invited to tour the current Museum and participate in interactive science experiments, compliments of the Museum in honor of the milestone event.

The South Florida Science Museum is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach .  To support the Museum’s capital campaign efforts, please reach Marcy Hoffman, development director, at (561) 370-7738 or [email protected], or visit the Museum’s website at www.sfsm.org.

Singers in our program learn all aspects of  proper choral singing and vocal technique, which include posture,  breathing, diction, vowel articulation, music reading, and sight  singing. Members also learn interpretation; music history; rehearsal  techniques; and performance techniques, presentation and etiquette.

In addition, the children are exposed to the diversity of many  cultures thorough music and interaction with each other; and they learn  communication, team-building and problem-solving skills. We nurture  their creativity which fosters personal growth, self esteem, and an  appreciation of music as art; and we promote good citizenship by  teaching the importance of “giving back” to our community and by  developing civic pride when on tour nationally and internationally. We  believe that education and growth in a highly positive, disciplined, and  caring environment will nurture and refine the individual’s talents,  abilities, and passion for music. As each individual singer matures, the  entire group will also benefit. This will enable the choir to achieve  the highest possible level of performance and excellence as a whole.

Young Singers was established by several music educators  in Palm Beach County, including Shawn Berry, Michael Yannette and Connie  Drosakis. Each of these founders has extensive experience in music for  the young voice, and enjoys local and national recognition for their  accomplishments. They envisioned a children’s choral organization that  would not be constrained by school boundaries, religious affiliations,  racial bias, socioeconomic barriers, or funding cuts to arts education.

Our enrollment  is comprised of singers in grades 3-12 from all parts of  Palm Beach County’s diverse racial, ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic communities.

Auditions for the 10th Anniversary season  are coming up on June 2 at the Kravis Center, for information on  participation please visit www.youngsingers.org.
