On January 12, 2012 at Madison Green Golf Club, the community came together to support a 15-year-old boy (Pierson Gossett) with making his dream come true.  See related story.  Comedians Adrian Mesa, Richy Lala and Kristen Black entertained the crowd.  Several prizes were raffled off to raise additional funds.  All in all, it was a very successful evening according to the family of Pierson.  Many thanks to all who showed their support through sponsorships, raffle prizes and by showing up!

Third Annual Lebow Awards for Excellence in Shakespearean Performance

This year marks the third annual Lebow Award for Excellence in Shakespearean Performance presented by Kids’ Dreams, Inc. in memory of Alan Lebow. On Saturday, December 17, twenty-five Title I high school students participated in the Lebow Award judging. The students performed short selections from Shakespearean plays before a panel of distinguished judges and were scored in five categories of performance which included concentration, emotional commitment, energy, evidence of understanding and overall performance. The two Lebow Award Winners and the two Honorable Mention students were invited to perform at the awards reception, scheduled for January 19 in the Kravis Center ’s Khoury Family Dance Rehearsal Hall prior to the 7 pm performance of Twelfth Night performed by the Classical Theatre Project in the Helen K. Persson Hall.

The two top winners, Jonathan Raffoul (Boynton Beach, Junior) and Johnson Sinophat (Palm Beach Lakes, Junior), will be presented with a check for $1,000, the two Honorable Mention students, Rood Emmanuel (Inlet Grove, Sophomore) and Angel Padua (Palm Beach Lakes, Junior), will each receive a check for $800 and seven additional, Distinguished Participants, Brendan Gardner (Boynton Beach, Junior);Yamari Hanslip (Palm Beach Gardens, Sophomore); Bridgette Karam (Boynton Beach, Junior); Isabella Letourneau (Atlantic, Freshman); Alex Stephenson (Santaluces, Junior); Simone Stewart (Atlantic, Freshman) and Tatyana Renald (Inlet Grove, Junior), will each receive checks for $200. All twenty-five participants will each receive a pair of tickets for the evening’s performance of the Shakespearean comedy, Twelfth Night.

Alan Lebow was never at a loss for words, especially those of great poets and playwrights.

In memory of Mr. Lebow and his love for dramatic recitation, the public charity founded by the Lebows – called Kids’ Dreams – is presenting the Alan Lebow Award for Excellence in Shakespearean Performance. Two $1,000, two $800 and seven $200 cash prizes are being awarded this evening at a special reception prior to The Classical Theatre Project ‘s performance of Twelfth Night in the Helen K. Persson Hall.

Participating full-time high school students enrolled in local Title I High Schools, with qualifying financial need, were judged on a memorized Shakespearean selection of three minutes or less on December 17. The student participants are being honored tonight. The four top awardees have been invited to perform their Shakespeare selections.

Polo . . . No Longer Just the “Sport of Kings”

If you’ve never gone to a polo game, do not feel alone. Many people in the Western Communities have lived here for several years and have never stepped foot on the polo grounds.

“It’s for the upper class only . . . I do not really understand what a polo game is . . .  What do I wear . . . Or what do I do when I get there?” These are just a few of the questions asked around town. It’s been called “The Sport of Kings,” but after a delightful Sunday I found that it’s a fun, affordable event for the whole family too.

 

As the International Polo Club Palm Beach kicks off its ninth season this January, there is something for Around Wellington readers to consider. If you’ve never been, 2012 may be your time to go to a polo game. 

 

“We’re gearing up for one of the most exciting seasons ever,” President of Club Operations John Wash said during the January 4th press conference held at the club’s pavilion.  “This year we have a record-setting 17 teams set to play in the high-goal polo between the opening four tournaments which include the Herbie Pennell Cup, the Joe Barry Memorial Cup, the Ylvisaker Cup and the C.V. Whitney Cup.”

 

Every Sunday during polo season, the IPC field comes alive with activities for the whole family. Starting at 2:00 PM, brunch is served at the field side pavilion located on the East side of the grounds. Although it is a little pricey, it is a divine treat. Guests are greeted with Vueve Cliquot champagne and hors d’oeuvres and then treated to some of the most amazing food this writer has ever eaten, thanks to IPC Catering’s Aaron Menitoff. 

 

2:00 PM is also the start time for the Wellington Zone. This area is beside the pavilion where children can pet farm animals and jump in bounce houses. There is also great seating in this area providing good viewing, especially if you want to relax and watch the game while the kids play. The Wellington Zone boasts reasonably priced food and drinks too. (Side note, this is a great spot for amateur photo enthusiasts to snap an up close shot of players and their ponies in action.) Spectators are also permitted to rent small tents along this area to host private viewing parties.

 

The official start time for each tournament is 3:00 PM. Although there are games all throughout the week, the club hosts its high goal tournaments each Sunday; this season’s calendar set from January 8 until April 22. (By the way, High goal relates to the players achievements and is really a way of ranking the top international players of the game.) 

 

On any given Sunday you will find all walks of life from an Argentinian cowboy who sidelines as a Ralph Lauren model to the Real Housewives from Atlanta. The crowd is filled with everyone from local celebrities to accountants, soccer moms, doctors, dentists and lawyers, there is no discrimination. 

 

Even the players are mostly down-to-earth family guys, just getting to do what they love for a living. One of the highest ranked players in the country, Julio Arellano, spoke to the crowd during the press conference to highlight his firsthand passion of the sport. “I grew up here in Wellington,” Arellano said, “I played in my first tournament here 30 years ago and I haven’t missed a season yet.” Arellano went on to share how every season he packs up his 20-plus ponies, three kids and his wife to play in various tournaments throughout the country from Aiken, SC to Wyoming. “For us it is a family venture, my wife and 14-year-old son play in tournaments as well. It is more than a sport, it is our life.”

 

Director of Polo Operations Jimmy Newman also highlighted an extra level of excitement for the upcoming season. “We are delighted to feature a schedule that includes the best players in the world, with several new teams participating this year.”

 

It’s these world class players, including a lot that live right here in Wellington, and polo’s non-stop pace that make it appealing to so many. The game is divided into six “chuckers” lasting around seven minutes each. And for even more of a thrill, sitting right on the field is an option for a small upgrade to general admission. These seats are the place to feel the breeze of ponies passing, huffing in a full on trot, carrying equestrian athletes swinging mallets with intense concentration.

 

Most of the crowd that sits close to the action dress comfortably but polo fashion can be anything from your best Sunday dress, your favorite Saturday afternoon gear to plain jeans and a top. Everything from Bass flats to Lucchese boots to Christian Louboutin heels to sneakers and sandals, it really is an even playing field, (pun intended). 

 

And don’t be intimidated when it’s time to “stomp the divots.” Get up and go out to in the middle of the field and enjoy some free champagne or an ice cream bar. You never know who you’ll run into.

 

It’s hard to imagine this is all going on in our backyard. The polo fields are located just between Pierson and Lake Worth Road on 120th Avenue, just a little west of Pierson Park. PERFECT FOR KIDS AND GRANDCHILDREN OF THE WELLINGTON CHAMBER. We are delighted to announce that The Wellington Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Wellington with the support of the South Florida Science Museum and the Palm Beach County Amateur Astronomy Association, are presenting our second annual “Dark Sky Party.”   This event is gaining county wide recognition and we are honored we were the first to kick off this event!

The event will take place on January 20, 2012 at 6:30pm at Village Park in the main gym. Attendees will be treated to an evening of sky watching, viewing the planets, learning about constellations, science projects and much more! Great food and beverage will be on site, so please arrive HUNGRY!!!

 

We would like to invite your students to join us that evening.  The cost is $5 per student and $5 for the parent.  Registered attendees will receive a bracelet at the door which must be worn for admission.

 

Each child must be accompanied by an adult. This is a first come, first serve event. Seniors Can Earn Car Insurance Discounts with Wellington’s AARP Driver Safety Class

 

Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions and the distractions we face behind the wheel. Rev up your driving skills at Wellington’s AARP Driver Safety Classes, offered one Thursday per month through May 2012. This course is designed to help seniors update their driving knowledge, learn defensive driving techniques and learn how to operate a vehicle more safely in today’s challenging driving environment. Boca Chefs To Battle It Out at Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation’s Country Club Chef Showdown

 

BOCA RATON, FL. –   Boca Raton ’s finest chefs are preparing to battle it out at Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation’s inaugural Country Club Chef Showdown. Sound Club will play host to this year’s inaugural event, which takes place on February 2, 2012, and will feature chefs from Boca West Country Club, Broken Sound Club, The Polo Club, Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club and Woodfield Country Club.

 

Using the same main ingredient, each chef will be asked to create a signature dish that will then be judged by a panel of celebrity judges.  Judges will include Stephanie Miskew, the Glamorous Gourmet; Zakir (Zak) Odhwani, Senior Vice President, U.S. Trust; Virginia Philip, Master Sommelier and Wine Director at The Breakers Palm Beach; Marie Speed, Group Editor, JES Publishing (Boca Raton Magazine); and legendary Chef Norman Van Aken, Director of Restaurants,  Miami Culinary Institute who is also known internationally as the founding father of “new world cuisine”.

 

Guests can spend the evening enjoying demonstrations, sampling the chef’s creations, sipping savory cocktails and bidding on high-end culinary and wine-themed silent auction items while waiting to see which chef takes home the top title. In addition to bragging rights, the winning chef/country club will have the option to host the 2013 Chef Showdown.
