Clay Glass Metal Stone Cooperative Gallery Present ‘The Art of the Amish-Special Guests Visit Gallery’

Friday, March 2nd – 6-9 PM and Saturday, March 3, 10AM-4PM

Lake Worth Evenings on the Avenue and Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery will have two special guests visiting town to display and sell their art and their Shoo-Fly Pies.   Elizabeth Peachy and Susan Kinsinger are members of an Old Order Amish group from Pennsylvania.  They have grown up with no electricity or modern conveniences. At home they ride in their horse drawn buggies.  Long time friends of Joyce Brown, president of Flamingo Clay Studio Cooperative, they are visiting the gallery with examples of the art they produce and the unique pies and pastries they bake.  Susan and Lizzie will be in Downtown Lake Worth on Friday, March 2nd from 6-9PM and on Saturday, March 3rd from 10AM-4PM.  Come visit them and extend a welcome to our area. Please, take no pictures.

Joyce spent most of her life as part of her family’s business, peddlers among the Amish.  For twenty-five years she traveled from her home in Philadelphia in a truck filled with fabrics from which the Amish made their clothing.  Her routes, from Amish settlement to Amish settlement, took her to states as far away as Montana.  She is an authority on the different clothing styles of all the Old Order Amish, Mennonite and Hutterite communities throughout the country.  Old order groups are those in horse and buggy and without modern conveniences.

For the last half century, the Amish have been traveling to Pine Craft on the West coast of Florida for retirement vacations.  They hire drivers or take buses that make weekly round-trips from communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.  Over the years, some have become permanent residents.  Joyce visits old friends each year.  This year, Lizzie Peachy and Susan Kinsinger decided they wanted to visit her.  They are bringing their paintings, some on boards, some on canvases, some on saws and some on buckets, as well as their wonderful baked goods.  Susan’s family has run an Amish printing press for over a half century.  She will be bringing books with her for sale. One book is of songs, both traditional and original, that a group of Indiana Amish (yodelers) have compiled.  Folklorists have found songs and verses in this book that have expanded their studies of oral histories.

If Susan and Lizzie make a good impression on Lake Worth and are able to sell their wares, they will be back next year with more friends and a wider variety of Amish art.  This will include Amish quilts, dolls and toys.

Clay§Glass§Metal§Stone Cooperative Gallery is sponsored by the Flamingo Clay Studio, a non-profit arts organization whose mission is to provide affordable studio and gallery space for three-dimensional artists.  The gallery is located at 605 Lake Avenue in downtown Lake Worth. Hours are Sunday thru Tuesday, 9AM-1PM. Wednesday thru Saturday, 9AM-9PM.   Gallery openings are the first and third Friday of each month from 6-9 PM with many special events in-between.  For information call Joyce Brown-215-205-9441 or JCLay6@aol.com.  Gallery phone: 561-588-8344.

February, 2012 – Rick Neuhoff Announces his Candidacy

MONEY TALKS, BUT VOTERS SHOUT!!!

PALM BEACH COUNTY (February 16, 2012) – img_3912

Rick Neuhoff officially announced his candidacy at 10:00 AM on Thursday, February 16, 2012, surrounded by family, friends and supporters in front of the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Office.

Have you heard them?  They are an enthused group, happy to sign a petition to help Rick Neuhoff qualify to appear on the ballot for the District 5 seat of the Palm Beach County Commission (www.RickNeuhoff2012.com).

With 1,147 verified signatures required by the Supervisor of Elections, Rick has received many more than that minimum and his motivated supporters are committed to vote on August 14, in the Primary, for their candidate, Rick Neuhoff.  As of now, there is no Republican challenger and the Primary may decide this race.

Instead of depending upon corporate and special interest donors, Rick sees himself as a public servant running because of his views and beliefs, not developing his views and beliefs to serve those who would expect favors in exchange for their political donations.  Neuhoff wants the people to sign for him, support him and vote for him!

img_3914His sensitivity and passion for helping those less fortunate is evident by his fund and awareness raising efforts for Muscular Dystrophy, UNICEF, Autism Speaks and Planned Parenthood.

He is appalled by politicians who use their office for personal gain rather than for the reasons they were elected, offended by those who value power and profit over the needs of the public good, and insulted by any who exploit religion and superstition to the exclusion of science.  Rick says, “These people generate fear and spread misinformation to create an easily controlled population for their benefit.”

Rick Neuhoff, on the other hand, is running to bring openness and accountability, a sustainable infrastructure and smart managed growth to Palm Beach County.  Ready to start the job from day one, Rick has developed a rebranding and marketing plan to entice tourists and businesses to Palm Beach which was once known as “Corruption County.”  Neuhoff says, “It is time for a perceivable change in our credibility and reputation.”

Because of his heart felt desire to serve and popularity with almost every political club in the County, his “People Powered Campaign” is overwhelming.  The public is all but “shouting” for his involvement and reaching out to him for his leadership.  He knows the fight will be difficult.  His opponent is part of a team with a near twenty year entrenchment in the County and we say… TOO LONG!  That is for Kings, not elected officials in a democracy!

February, 2012 – Mayor Matty Mattioli Runs Again

AW Stories of the Month

Interview with Mayor Matty Mattioli of Royal Palm Beach

Mattioli Runs Again for Mayor

By Krista Martinelli

Mayor Matty Mattioli moved to Royal Palm Beach thirty years ago and has watched the village grow. When he moved here from Pennsylvania, it was a village of just 5,500 people and today Royal Palm Beach is more of a “small city” with 34,000 residents.  He has served as Mayor for two years, and he’s been a part of the Village Council for 18 years.  “I like what I’m doing,” says the 84-year-old Mayor, who has been involved in politics since the age of 18.

Mattioli is proud of many of the projects that they’ve completed

Mayor of Royal Palm Beach Matty Mattioli

and also of the fact that Royal Palm Beach is not in a state of economic crisis. “I believe we can accomplish what we want to do without needing to raise taxes,” says Mattioli, pointing to the Village’s reserve of 73 million dollars. “Why deprive yourself of living a normal life,” he says, “when you have money in the reserve?”

When it comes to the national economic downturn, Mattioli is critical of the banking industry. In his previous career as a real estate agent (for 25 years), he saw the writing on the wall when mortgages were being handed out all too freely. “If you could breathe, they would give you a mortgage,” he says, referring to a few years ago, just before the housing market crisis.  “We the American people bailed out the banks. Now they should be bailing people out…because you can’t do nothin’ without money!” he says with a smile.

This is the way Mattioli is – funny and to the point.  He’s the proud grandfather of eleven grandchildren. His wife passed away a year ago.  So he’s on his own now, trying to take the wisdom of his previous years in politics and apply them to the upcoming years. “Now that I’m retired, I like what I’m doing [as Mayor].  If something good comes of it, all the better.”

Mattioli worked with the Better Business Bureau and the Palm Beach Economic Council, teaming together to build a large, approximately 500,000 square foot warehouse, which will be run by Aldi Company, behind the Regal Cinema on 441.  “I’m very proud of this project and it’s estimated to create about 500 new jobs,” says Mattioli. He reminds us, however, that it will take 15 months or more to build it.

In his previous career, Mattioli worked for Corning Glass as a territory manager for 22 years and really enjoyed the position.

Eventually he felt the strain of constantly traveling and decided to retire in Florida. He also has experience officiating horse shows for 33 years and as a polo referee for 25 years at Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania. He feels that he has a good working relationship with the Village Manager Raymond Liggins and the other five Council members. Because of the Florida Sunshine Law, they cannot discuss the proposals that come onto their desks, except for in the course of the public meetings. However, they have a good system for looking at the budget, communicating every day and coming to agreement on the proposals that are most beneficial to Royal Palm Beach.

The Mayor’s opponent Felicia Matula has pointed out that she would “run the Council meetings differently,” making a point to listen to every individual who wants to speak. Mattioli explains that he holds the gavel, so in the normal process of the meeting, he gets to speak first.  Then he asks the Council for their opinion. Then they ask the applicant, the person bringing a proposal before the Council, to speak. Issues are decided by a “Yay” or “Nay” vote.

“Every agenda has room for statements from the public,” says Mattioli.  He feels that concerned citizens will speak up as needed. However, he’s not so concerned with the fact that Royal Palm Beach council meetings are usually attended by just a handful of residents. He explains, “They’re happy with what’s going on.”

Mattioli has focused on the Parks system of Royal Palm Beach and was also instrumental in having new water and sewer lines installed in the south end of the Village.  In his other activities, Mattioli is a founding member of the Young at Heart Club, a member of the American Legion post 367, on the board of directors of the League of Cities and a member of Our Lady Queen of the Apostles Church.

He aims to keep Royal Palm Beach a great place to live, work and play.
