FIFTH ANNUAL RUN FOR THE ANIMALS

& FAMILY FUN DAY

 

West Palm Beach, FL – The Fifth Annual Run for the Animals and Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012 from 8 am to 3 pm at the Micanopy Pavilion at Okeeheelee Park, West Palm Beach.  The 5K run and the 5 K walk will begin at 8 am (registration at 7 am) and the one mile family / dog walk will begin at 9 am.

 

This event is presented by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to benefit Animal Rescue Force, Paws 2 Help and Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue.  Sponsoring along with PBSO are The Palm Beach Kennel Club, CBS News Channel 12 TV, Sunny 104.3 FM, WIRK 107.9 Country Radio, PetCo, Sergeants Pet Products, VIP Dog Boarding / Day Care and Grooming, and Kenny Mondo’s DJ and Productions.

 

Dog contests will be held at 1 pm – cutest, larges, smallest, most original costume and dog/human look alike – contest entry fee is $5 per dog per category.  There will be pets for adoption from local shelters and breed rescue organizations.  For the children there will be a bounce house, rock wall, and a clown and face painting by Cookie the Clown. Captain Cartoon will sketch caricatures of you and / or your dog.  

 

Activities will continue throughout the day. They will include demonstrations of animal CPR by Pet Tech First Aid and CPR, dog agility by the Tailwaggers, performance by Amos the Wonder Horse and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain will conduct the Blessing of the Animals. 

 

The PBSO Mounted Unit will make an appearance, as will the PBSO bloodhounds. Animal Care & Control will display the Neuter Commuter and will offer vouchers for reduced fee rabies shot, tag and microchip for sterilized pets.  In addition there will be pet related vendors and lots of raffle & silent auction items.  Food vendors will be there with tummy treats.

 

Pre-registration is encouraged and may be done by credit card at AccuChipTiming.com. Registrations still accepted at PBSO Animal Kindness Unit – 3228 Gun Club Road – West Palm Beach 33406 – please make checks payable to PAL.  $30 fee for 5 K run – $25 for 5 K walk and $20 for family dog walk.  Admission to the event is free but donations would be appreciated and gratefully accepted.

Improvements for the New Year

It’s not that I don’t need to improve anything in my life – my diet, finances or organizational skills.  But many New Year’s resolutions tend to be some form of improvement.  It just seems like it’s focusing on aspects that are wrong or defective.  It’s a bit of a downer in a time afresh with hope.

 

This past summer I attended the Silpada (jewelry) national convention. At one training session there was a very moving film by DeWitt Jones. Jones was a photographer from National Geographic.  The main point of the film was that we should focus on what’s right in the world, instead of focusing on what’s wrong. In his film he shows how he berated himself for not getting a photograph of a field of dandelions in full bloom in time.  When he finally took the picture, the dandelions had gone to seed. Initially, his reaction was one of defeat and remorse for a missed opportunity.  However, closer examination revealed that the “puff-balls” as he called them had their own beauty.  You can view a preview of the film on his website: http://www.celebratetraining.com/

 

In so many areas of our life we can feel as though we missed the boat or have a field of “puff-balls.”  During this past Christmas, I felt as though I were drowning in a to-do list.  Items on the list were stacked up like planes at JFK.  Finally my dog Rosie couldn’t wait any longer.  She prodded my hand off of the computer mouse with her nose and proceeded to jump up on me.  “I give up,” I told her.  I plunked my son’s helmet on his head and declared it was time to scooter around the neighborhood.  Although no further progress was made on the laundry, customer care calls or gift wrapping, it was a refreshing activity to energize.  The outing gave me a fresh perspective and relieved anxiety.  I focused on what I DID have.  We swung through the basement on our way back inside and remembered I had a beautiful gold garland there, just waiting to be brought up to the family room for the holidays.  I didn’t need to go out to find decorations after all. 

 

I often hear excuses from myself and from others for not exercising – no time, it’s too early, it’s too late, I’m too tired.  And (especially) in my role as a Weight Watchers instructor, I have to ask, “What CAN you do?” At some point, you have to get away from the negative and flip it to the positive.  That point is now!

Last Minute Holiday Shopping, Not a Good Idea

Is it the 24th of December and you forgot to get gifts? And your recipients live up north? You are in so much trouble. When you ordersanta-timer the wine online, I suggest that you send it to yourself. And drink it. The gift may cost you 20 bucks, but the delivery will be 100 bucks in this economy. So here I am in Florida; the idea of Xmas and New Year’s seems to have eluded me. Chocolates, you think? If you assume that you can ship them out of state at a reasonable rate, then you are either out of your mind or very wealthy. The online solution was not the best idea that I ever came up with. You’ll get a popup on the website that says, “I don’t think so, loser.” Do I have a solution for you? Well, yes. But you’ll have to read to the end of my whine.

 

There are a few popular websites that really deliver precious goods. The flower website. You know the one. This week for delivery was blacked out on the calendar. What about buying a gift yourself and going to a post office? Forget it. Unless someone left you a huge inheritance, the shipping is exorbitant.

 

Chocolates-are they fresh? Then you can forget that option. Toys? That was a good one. It seems that the best stuff was sold out two weeks ago. But, you know, I live in my own world. When it comes to my life, I really put the pro in procrastinator. (I stole that line from a t-shirt.)

 

And then the light dawned on me. Why would I call the 800 number? Find out where the local branch in the neighborhood is. Dial the local number in the recipient’s neighborhood and see if they will deliver it on the 24th at a standard fee. And they probably will. Problem solved! Will the gift be perfect? Listen, I can’t solve all of your problems. Remember, it’s the thought that counts.

January Story Time at Scott’s Place

 

Your kids may not stay up to watch the ball drop in Times Square, but they can ring in the New Year at Story Time at Scott’s Place in Wellington! Beginning at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 7th, children of all ages will be delighted with stories and free giveaways about New Year’s Day. A leader from the Little Blessings Ministry at the First Baptist Church of Royal Palm Beach will serve as the guest reader.

 

Story Time takes place at Scott’s Place barrier free playground located at 12190 Forest Hill Boulevard on the first Saturday of every month through May 2012. Participants are encouraged to enjoy the playground before and after the event. The park is designed with large play structures and ramps ensuring children and parents of all physical abilities can play together.

 

The following Story Time dates and themes are scheduled:

In memory of the 300,000 who died in the Earthquake

Saturday, January 14, 2012 (Rain or Shine)

7:00 AM- 12:00 PM    Lake Worth Florida

 The Haitian American Tree Trust (HATT) will be sponsoring its First Annual Walkathon in memory of the 300,000 who died in the 7.0 Haitian Earthquake.  5000 participants will march from Lake Worth City Hall to the Beach.  The Walk is expected to raise the funds that will enable the planting of 300,000 Fruit Trees throughout Haiti, one for each person who died.  This is part of a major reforesting effort in Haiti. 

 

The Walkathon will take place on Saturday, January 14, 2012.  Registration begins at 824 Lake Avenue at 7:00 AM.  Sponsorship fees are $10 for a walker who will receive entry and a Tee Shirt, and $20 for a Tee Shirt with sponsor’s company logo on the back.  Sponsors should make checks payable to HATT Foundation, 824 Lake Avenue, Suite A, Lake Worth FL 33460.  All donations are tax deductible.

 

In addition to the reforesting of Haiti, the funds HATT raises will provide clean water to the citizens of Haiti.  This will be done by building sustainable ponds throughout the nine departments in Haiti. The hope is to completely eliminate the dread disease of Cholera and provide all families with clean water. These ponds will feed into many cities and villages around the departments.

Hometown Holiday Toy Drive a Success in Wellington

 

Wellington wants to thank its residents for stepping up to the plate and donating hundreds of toys to its 3rd Annual Hometown Holiday Toy Drive! With special thanks to Walgreens, the Mall at Wellington Green, the NFL Alumni South Florida Chapter, Fabian Realty, local places of worship, the Boys and Girls Club, the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Palms West Chamber of Commerce, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, children in Wellington and the surrounding communities will get to experience the happy holiday season they deserve.

 

Today, Wellington Mayor Darell Bowen and Councilwoman Anne Gerwig joined the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue in handing out toys to children at Palms West Hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Wellington is also distributing toys to local families over the course of the next two days.
