$25 for members; $35 for nonmembers (includes full Garden admission).

Registration is required; class size is limited to 15 adults; classes are nonrefundable.

Forest Bathing—also known as Nature Therapy—is an immersive experience in nature that gives participants an opportunity to reset their outlook on life and have an encounter with nature in a way that they have never-before experienced. It is a sensory practice away from phones, computers, and social media and back to what the body yearns for—a connection with nature, a sense of peace, a sense of relaxation, and a sense of being in the present moment. It provides the perfect time to become a human “be-ing” instead of a human “do-ing”. During a Forest Bathing experience, attendees will be invited to slow down and reconnect with nature’s perfect balance using their senses to see the sunlight playing through the leaves, smell the flowers, and feel and hear the gentle wind whispering to return to one’s native roots and discover a deeper self. The nature encounter concludes with a tea ceremony to connect with other like-minded nature lovers. Forest Bathing has been scientifically proven to boost immune strength, lift depression, reduce stress, and improve sleep. But beyond these physiological changes, this contemplative experience demonstrates how important it is for well-being to take time in nature on a daily basis.

Note: Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before start time and bring a chair or yoga mat.

HARMONY IN ACTION: SUNFEST 2024 CELEBRATES MILESTONE 40th FESTIVAL WITH MUSIC, ART AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

0

A festival beyond entertainment, SunFest is “Helping Neighbors”

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) – SunFest, West Palm Beach’s iconic waterfront music and art festival, is not just about entertainment; it’s a powerful community-building event. Marking its 40th anniversary on May 3-5, SunFest 2024 will celebrate the historic milestone by bringing back initiatives that underscore its nonprofit status and community focus. “Helping Neighbors,” The Palm Beach Post Pathfinders Awards Program, Kids Day, fundraising opportunities for local nonprofits and volunteer opportunities make SunFest standout among other music festivals and have earned it 40 years of accolades as Florida’s favorite waterfront event.

“As we celebrate our 40th anniversary at SunFest, we’re reminded of the deep connection and sense of pride we share with the Palm Beach County community,” said SunFest Executive Director Dianna Craven. “Through our SunFest 365 initiatives, we’re not just hosting a festival, but nurturing a legacy that strengthens and unites our community.”

Underwritten again this year by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), SunFest’s “Helping Neighbors” program is an annual community outreach program that donates 700 tickets to area charities for distribution to individuals who otherwise might not be able to attend the festival. Since the inception of the “Helping Neighbors” program, SunFest has given away thousands of tickets to underserved Palm Beach County residents, serving over 50 agencies each year. The application deadline is February 28, 2024 and applications are available at SunFest.com/sunfest-365. Thanks to FPL’s support, more Palm Beach County residents can experience a weekend of music and art in downtown West Palm Beach.

“At Florida Power & Light Company, we believe in the power of community and the strength that comes from lifting each other up,” said Pam Rauch, vice president of external affairs and economic development at FPL. “By supporting the Helping Neighbors program at SunFest of Palm Beach County, we aim to create a space where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can come together, enjoy the festivities, and build connections that enrich our shared community spirit.”

Each year, SunFest awards a college scholarship to a high school senior in the area of instrumental music. The recipient of the SunFest Music Scholarship receives $1,000 a year for four years. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors from a public, private or charter high school in Palm Beach or Martin County, planning to major or minor in music, and have an overall grade point average of 2.5. Students cannot self-apply but must be nominated by their high school and will submit a completed application package through the Pathfinders of Palm Beach and Martin Counties scholarship program. For more information about the Pathfinder Awards visit pathfinderawards.org.

As a community partner, SunFest has a tradition of opening the festival early on Friday to welcome over 250 children, all with special needs of varying degrees. With sponsorship from Gehring Group, a Risk Strategies Company, activities, gifts, music, food and loving attention are offered to each child as they enjoy SunFest without the crowds in their very own way. This program has continued to grow and has embraced thousands of special needs children since its inception 17 years ago.

Over the past 10 years, SunFest has helped local nonprofit organizations raise more than $1 million for their causes. Participating nonprofits recruit their own volunteers for SunFest and get paid for their time during the festival, while exposing their mission to SunFest attendees.

“Sunfest’s collaboration with Friends of Foster Children allows us to raise funds and awareness of the needs of foster children in Palm Beach County,” said Friends for Foster Children Executive Director Jane Richardson. “With Sunfest’s support, we are given an extraordinary platform to speak about our mission to thousands of people. Sunfest is truly a highlight of Friends of Foster Children’s year.”

SunFest’s success hinges on its incredible volunteers. As the festival gears up for 2024, it invites more individuals to join its team. Last year, over 2,100 volunteers contributed an impressive 19,500 hours, not only during the festival but throughout the year. Volunteers enjoy perks such as free admission, parking, meals and an official SunFest t-shirt, all while experiencing the beauty of West Palm Beach’s waterfront.

From its roots as the 10-day Royal Palm Festival, SunFest has evolved into a three-day extravaganza of music, art and community connection. After four decades, the festival’s heart remains the same – a celebration of community spirit and togetherness. Many volunteers return each year, drawn by the festival’s enduring commitment to the West Palm Beach community.

SunFest is produced by SunFest of Palm Beach County, Inc., a private 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. SunFest of Palm Beach County, Inc. consists of a 19-member board of directors; 25 committees; nearly 2,400 volunteers; a full-time, year-round staff of 5; and approximately 75 corporate sponsors. SunFest is funded in part by the Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council through the Palm Beach County Cultural Council. SunFest is also sponsored in part by the State of Florida, the Department of State, the Division of Arts and Culture, and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. The festival has provided a springtime soundtrack along its outdoor, palm-lined ¾ mile setting for nearly 40 years, and includes a variety of performers and upbeat, more-than-just-music offerings for sunseekers to reunite with friends.

To be considered as a participating nonprofit for the 2024 event, contact volunteer@sunfest.com. For general information about SunFest 2024, volunteer or sponsorship opportunities, please visit www.SunFest.com or email info@sunfest.com.

Tenth Annual Mayor’s Ball Set for Saturday, April 6th

0

Event Will Shine a Light on Homeless Veterans

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL. – On any given night, more than 1,855 people in Palm Beach County do not have a safe, permanent place to call home. It is a devastating reality for so many and one that is in stark contrast to the view that is seen when thinking of Palm Beach County.

Working to reduce that number is The Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County, a nonprofit created nearly 30 years ago to generate awareness through advocacy, education, and community outreach, and funding to close gaps in services through collaborative efforts.

Each year, the organization hosts its most significant fundraising event, The Mayor’s Ball, bringing together community leaders, philanthropists and changemakers to raise crucial funding to support collective efforts to end homelessness. The 2024 event will kick off at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 6th at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. The black-tie gala promises an evening filled with excitement and festivity starting with cocktails and followed by dinner and dancing.

“We are very much looking forward to hosting the 10th Annual Mayor’s Ball,” shared CEO of The Homeless Coalition, Dr. Tomara Mays. “This year, our focus will be on recognizing homeless veterans. Homeless veterans are a special group of individuals who gave so selflessly but have since struggled to overcome what they experienced during their service to our country. Riddled with mental and sometimes physical illness, they truly need our support. This year, we will honor and pay tribute to these men and women.”

While the event focuses on recognizing homeless veterans, there are so many others who are experiencing the same challenges. Children, teens, adults, even entire families, can all be at risk of homelessness. In fact, during the 2022- 2023 school year, the School District of Palm Beach County identified nearly 5,000 children as homeless and The Homeless Coalitions’ Project Homeless Connect program helped 400 individuals.

“This issue is very complex, but it can be boiled down to two main causes – unemployment and a lack of affordable housing. Rising rental prices leave many residents with the burden of spending 30-50% of their income on housing,” added Dr. Mays.

Since its inception, the Mayor’s Ball has netted more than $1.5 million for homeless services, impacting nearly 2,100 people moving them from homelessness into permanent housing. Monies from the event break barriers through combined efforts supporting Gulfstream Goodwill, The Lord’s Place, Adopt-A-Family of the Palm Beaches, Inc., and the Homeless Outreach Team who all work tirelessly to get individuals and families to a safe and stable place.

Michelle Diffenderfer, Katrina Long-Robinson, Christian Bergstrom, and Paul Dumars Jr. will all serve as co-chairs of the event with Congressman Brian Mast, Kate Capaldo Arrizza, Julia Dattolo, Sophia Eccleston, and Shenetria Moore serving as honorary co-chairs.

Sponsorships, tables, and tickets starting at $550 are available and can be purchased at https://MayorsBall2024.givesmart.com. For additional information, please contact Celissa Stringer at cstringer@hcpbc.org or call 561.355.9912.

The Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County, Inc., is a 501(c) 3 corporation located at 345 S. Congress Ave in Delray Beach, FL 33445. Kite Building and Flying Workshops at Morikami Museum and Japanese Garden

Mikio Toki,

Master Kite Craftsman

DELRAY BEACH, FL – The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach is pleased to host several events focused on the art of kite building and flying for all ages on February 17-18.

Building and flying kites is an historic, traditional cultural practice in Japan. There are hundreds of different kite varieties, with each region of country having its own specific, traditional style.

Participate in the tradition by making and flying your very own kite with world renowned Japanese kite instructor and master craftsman, Mikio Toki and his daughter, Asami Toki.

On Saturday, February 17 there will be a family kite-making workshop from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Cost is $33 for a parent, $10 per child, and a $5 materials fee for each participant. Advanced registration is required. Children aged 6 and older will make rocket kites with Mikio Toki, and fly them afterward.

Also on Saturday, February 17, there will be an adult workshop for ages 14 and older from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. This workshop costs $52 plus a $10 materials fee with advance registration required. Participants will make dyed kites, known as orizome, with Mikio Toki and then fly them.

On Sunday, February 18, the public is invited to fly kites, including ones built at the weekend’s events at the museum or brought from home. The event will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Morikami Park. In the event of inclement weather, Mikio Toki will present a lecture about Japanese kites in the theater. Free but advance registration is required.

About Mikio Toki and Asami Toki:

Kite artist Mikio Toki was born and raised in Tokyo. He designs and makes Tokyo-style kites. As a young boy, Mikio was mesmerized by kites designed and flown by kite master Katsuhisa Ota. He aspired to design and build kites just like the elderly kite master and has been doing so for many years. In 2012, Mikio’s daughter, Asami decided to carry on their artistic lineage. She has assisted in kite-making workshops for children and adults in Japan as well as around the world. More recently, she has started to create new mini kites. Together, the Tokis experiment with designing traditional kites using modern materials, innovative colors, and dyes. Frequently invited to kite festivals worldwide, they continue to paint and create new Japanese kite masterpieces that they then share and fly with the public.

Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is located at 4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach. For more information, call (561) 495-0233 or visit morikami.org.
