October, 2011 – Citizens for Pets in Condos Featuring Steve-O

From: Maida W. Genser for Citizens FOR Pets in Condos

Citizens FOR Pets in Condos is happy to announce Steve-O

(Stephen Glover, http://www.steveo.com/) as a national celebrity spokesperson.

Steve-O was recently in Fort Lauderdale on his new comedy tour. He became famous for doing outrageous and dangerous stunts for Jackass, the TV series and movies. He was also a contestant last year on Dancing with the Stars. When he was in this area, he received an award from PETA for his humanitarian work to protect animals. He began his career as a circus clown and started campaigning for animals when he saw first-hand the poor treatment of elephants in circuses. He is a champion for animals, including being vegan (not eating them or using any animal products).

Why has Steve-O decided to embrace this cause? He said, “Having two rescues dogs has enriched my life more than I can express. I’m happy to do what I can to encourage more condo associations to allow their unit owners to have pets, as well.” He added, “I think it makes a great deal of sense to outlaw nuisance behavior, rather than pets and I will let that be known.”

Citizens FOR Pets in Condos http://www.petsincondos.org is a non-profit public advocacy and educational organization dedicated to increasing acceptance of companion animals in condos and other types of association-run housing. We educate the public about the health benefits of having animal companions and also advocate for responsible pet ownership/guardianship. Our motto: “creating a win-win situation for both people & pets.” We provide resources for a pet-friendly America/Florida

Some people may think we joined forces with Steve-O because he does outrageous things and we want to do the outrageous task of changing how associations deal with animals, when the current anti-pet strategy has been in place for so long. What we think is outrageous is that hundreds of perfectly adoptable cats and dogs are “euthanized” (a nice way to say they are exterminated) every day in south Florida while there are at least as many people who would adopt them, but are not allowed to do so because of outdated no-pet deed restrictions. We are talking mainly about people who own their homes or apartments, but do not have the same rights as the 63% of US households that have companion animals.

Citizens for Pets in Condos is extremely pleased to have Steve-O on our side and to carry our message.
