Thick, Black Blanket

By Stephanie Courtois

The thick, black smoke rose into the air making a blanket across the New York sky. Terror ran rampant across the city and fear was the only thing that could occupy the mind.

On that morning, 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial planes. Two smashed into the World Trade Center; the third went into the Pentagon. The fourth did not make it to Washington D.C. as planned and crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.

Although I was only seven years of age, the day I will forever remember is known as the 9/11 terror attacks. I was not centrally located at the heart of the city, but its impacts greatly affected my life in Queens. I was in second grade and class was in full session. I even recall doing my daily journal at the time when the chaos was taking place.

Before I could even grasp what was going on, my teacher had left the school. Her sister worked in the World Trade Center and she rushed home immediately. Not even ten minutes after my teacher dashed home, parents were pulling their children out of school, myself included.

My mother was in distress, I sensed it in her voice even though she did not inform me of the havoc going on at the time. Everyone was rushing to get home safely. Shortly after my mother and I arrived home, my father joined us after leaving his bakery.

He was shocked by what he viewed on the way home from work and his story is so surreal that I had a difficult time illustrating the images in my mind. He described how the people who worked in the city walked home across bridges and roads covered in white dust and ash. The subways were shut down and there was silence amongst the devastated crowd. No one could even put what they had witnessed in to words because it was too overwhelming.

For a long time, the inhabitants of New York lived in apprehension and looked at the sky with fear every time a plane flew overhead. Peace has been restored for the most part back in the Big Apple, but I can never put the image out of my mind of the thick black smoke that blanketed the sky.

Introducing the revolutionary concept of LIVE performances in combination with the visual arts! A new concept introduced by Adam White, gallery owner and Wendy White, playwright and founder of the New Light Theatre. (no relation).   Following the successful launch of “The Jewish Nun” at the New Light Theatre at Gallery 101 – Wendy White is proud to present new plays representing all kinds of love!

The freedom to love is the theme of this production featuring new one-act plays written by Wendy White, Playwright and Co-Founder of the New Light Foundation, Inc. (www.newlightgallery.org) and Vanessa Garcia, Artistic Director of The Krane, Inc. (http://thekrane.com/)

THE PROPOSAL by Vanessa Garcia
A young couple together for about 7 years are about to make one of the biggest decisions in their lives. The entire short revolves around their decision making process revealing their relationship, their issues, their love.

MARRY ME! by Wendy White
A one act play capturing the day – June 24, 2011 – when lawmakers in New York voted to legalize same-sex marriage, making New York the largest state where gay and lesbian couples will be able to wed. As a result, the passing of the “marriage bill” may double the amount of married couples in our country.

I WANT TO BE YOUR SCULPTURE by Wendy White
A one-act comedy portraying the challenge of love, art, marriage and sculpture.

Monologues and poetry will also be featured for a rapturous evening celebrating the freedom of love!

Adam White went to see one of Wendy’s plays recently in Miami at Wynwood’s GAB studio and decided to offer Wendy a permanent home in his Fort Lauderdale gallery surrounded by cafes, restaurants, boutiques and other galleries. “Wendy and New Light Theatre will be able to cast plays every month and have a solid home base from which to create. We are very excited to have her here; she is an immense talent that promises to get even bigger and better with this wonderful association” states Adam White, Gallery owner, Gallery 101.

“Jump into Love is all about Love! The freedom to love, to live, to be who you are;” states playwright, Wendy White. “Jump into Love celebrates new breakthroughs in our nation where men and women of all lifestyles finally have equal rights under the law. It is truly an honor to showcase “Jump Into Love” as the newest production at the New Light Theatre’s new venue at Gallery 101. Special thanks to Adam White, gallery owner and fine artist for opening his doors to us!”

“We Jump into love every day, every hour, every minute; sometimes we are aware, sometimes we’re not. Sometimes it’s the most wonderful thing in the world, sometimes the scariest and riskiest. Why not celebrate all of it — the leap into the arms of someone we love, the sting that sometimes comes as a result of a heart open to love. Over and over again. Jump Into Love is an homage to all of it,” says Vanessa Garcia, playwright and founding artistic director of Krane, Inc.

Krane, Inc. was named Best of the City 2010 by Miami Magazine, as the best up and coming theatre company in town. http://vanessagarcia.org/press/tethrical-chairs.php. Also in 2010, Vanessa Garcia, the Founding Artistic Director of Krane, Inc. was named one of Miami’s 20 Under 40 by The Miami Herald for her work in theatre. For more information about Garcia, please visit: www.vanessagarcia.org

As for the companies themselves — Krane, Inc. and New Light Foundation, Inc. have produced performances all over the world from Amsterdam to Edinburgh; New York City to Miami. This is their first performance together at the New Light Theatre’s new venue at Gallery 101.

The playwright and director, Wendy White has written over 120 one-act plays and was a resident playwright, curator and director at the Kraine Theater in the East Village of New York City from 1984 to 1992, and at the Expanded Arts Theater Company from 1994 to 2001, in the Lower East Side of New York City. Her off-Broadway productions are the base for her new venue at the New Light Theatre. She recently produced The Jewish Nun to sold out audiences at the New Light Theatre at Gallery 101, in Off-Broadway’s 59e59 Street Theatre and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

In 2009, New Light Foundation, Inc. represented the United States as Art ambassadors by the 1-2-3 Kinderlachen e.V. foundation of Rottenburg, Germany by hosting the international “Global Gallery” project (www.123kinderlachen.org). During the course of this important project, the “world’s biggest canvas” emerged; painted by children – transcending all borders and conflicts.

The New Light Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit public foundation, has won numerous awards around the globe, has performed everywhere from Amsterdam to Paris; from Miami to Los Angeles to New York City; and has tackled subjects relating to women, love, politics, and Shakespeare. Wellington High School Debate Team to host Tournament

The Wellington High School Debate & Forensic Team is slated to host the first Palm Beach Catholic Forensic League (PBCFL) tournament of the 2011-12 season on Saturday, September 17. The tournament, known as the “All-Congress,” will find nearly 450 high school students from Palm Beach and Martin counties competing in Congressional Debate, a mock federal congress where teens will debate the merits of nearly 20 national and international current event topics, including the privatization of NASA, whether Sept. 11 should be declared a national holiday, and the United Nations’ upcoming vote on creation of a Palestinian state.
The Wellington High School Debate and Forensic Team

To allow both the smooth operation of the tournament, as well as helping Wellington Debate raise money for its upcoming championship season, the program is seeking seeking individual and corporate sponsorships to help maintain and improve its nationally recognized program. The nationally-recognized team is slated to compete at approximately 22 local, regional and national tournaments this year, including competitions in Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. Donations are needed to help offset travel, lodging and registration expenses; the cost to the team of attending a tournament can range from $1,200 to $5,000. Although the team receives administrative support as a school activity, the ability of the team to continue its success on a national level depends on its ability to garner financial support from the community.
Individuals, businesses and corporations interested in sponsoring the program are encouraged to send donations to Wellington High School Debate, 2101 Greenview Shores Blvd., Room 1-137, Wellington FL 33414. Please include your company’s name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and web site address. Checks should be made out to “Wellington High School Debate.” Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by IRS regulations.
For more information, e-mail Coach Paul L. Gaba at gaba@wellingtondebate.com, or call him at (561) 795-4911. Additional information about the Wellington Debate and Forensic Team can be found on its web site: www.wellingtondebate.com.

Wellington’s debate program, directed by Gaba, is supported by an administrative team headed by Principal Mario Crocetti. The Wellington Debate and Forensic Team is among the top five programs in Florida, and ranks among the top five percent of National Forensic League chapters nationally, signifying its continued success both in the classroom and at tournaments. The National Forensic League is an honor society for students who compete in speech, drama and debate. It is one of two organizations that the National Association of Secondary School Principals recommends each high school have, the other being the National Honor Society.

September, 2011 – Happy Back to School!

0

Dear Readers,img_0611-kspj

Happy September!  For parents and kids, it’s that back to school time of year and we are all getting up a little bit earlier than over the summer.  Back to our routines, back to home work, back to filling lunch boxes, etc.  To me, it feels more like the beginning of a new year than January.  Hope you’re enjoying everything that’s new in your routine.

Speaking of Back-to-School, check out and let us know what you think. Writer Melanie Lewis writes an open letter to her elementary school principal, questioning the use of movies in school.  What do you think?  Should teachers use movies as a reward for good behavior in school?  Or is that laziness – on the part of the teachers?  I would like to hear from parents, teachers and kids on this one!  Email: and put “Movies in School” as your subject line.

Don’t forget to enter our new, super-easy contest and you could win a one-hour massage at Massage Envy in Royal Palm Beach!  Between Sept. 1st – 15th, just find the little “AW Contest!” … (you know what?  A lot of you are old pro’s at this by now, so just go to our “” link to see how to do it if you don’t already know).  You could be a winner!  After this one, our next contest will be an extra special one – thanks to renowned-illustrator Rollin McGrail.  Keep checking back on our “Contest” page, so you don’t miss it!

I want to warmly welcome our new advertising representative Shawn Thompson. You already know Shawn because she compiles the information for “” each month, bringing us the latest in where kids eat FREE Around Wellington – and other good stuff.  She joins Damon Webb in selling advertising for AroundWellington.com – and I think they’ll be a great team.  Please contact either Shawn (561-386-1372) or Damon (561-452-3853) with your advertising questions.

We are presenting a fun event on September 20th, along with Nature’s Table Café – a Coupon Swap.  Actually it was Shawn Thompson’s idea – she noticed that people were doing this in other cities around the country.  So if you’re up for some good coupon sharing and money-saving tips, please RSVP ASAP to me at: . Bring your own scissors!  .

For our “” story, we are featuring Nature’s Table Café in Wellington.  Check out their excellent wraps, paninis smoothies!  Owner Bedonna Flesher loves to see her customers sample new things, so stop by and find out what your favorites are.  Check out the article for more details on this terrific place, if you haven’t already discovered it.

One of my favorite events every year, by the way, is the Peace Ceremony in Wellington, organized by the Wellington Rotary Club and Dr. Wes Boughner. No matter what your background, religion or politics, it’s a beautiful event for “taking a moment” and honoring the idea of world peace. Students are awarded for the essays, poems and drawings related to peace. An advocate for peace in our community is recognized with a special award.  And usually the ceremony wraps up with the release of doves into the air.  So don’t miss this one on September 21stat 6pm at the Wellington Peace Park, right near the library on Forest Hill Blvd.

Welcome to our newest columnist Sofia Sanchez!  Sofia is a delightful seven-year-old girl on a mission – to bake, cook, create and someday have her own bakery.  See her easy recipe for a Fruit Salad with Dip this month by visiting “.”  Each month she’ll bring you a new recipe, something that’s easy for kids to prepare.

I’m happy to tell you about two new advertisers this month – LadyBugs of Wellington and UltraCleaners.  Right after LadyBugs opened their wonderful consignment shop for kids, teens and maternity, I heard from one of our readers – Courtney, the President of the Wellington Mom’s Club.   (561) 790-7990.

has five locations around Palm Beach County – one of the locations is just outside the Mall at Wellington Green, over near Coldstone Creamery.  Happy customer Jill Coon says, I appreciate the convenience of the pick up and delivery service they offer. My clothes are spotless, smell fresh and are ironed perfectly. I also love the fact that Ultra Cleaners does shoe repair. They did a terrific job on a pair of heels I had. Ultra Cleaners is the best!” Visit them at the Pointe at Wellington Green – 10240 Forest Hill Blvd, Suite 130, Wellington. (561) 753-6200.

THANKS to all of our writers, photographers, advertisers and to you, our dear readers!

Here’s our table of contents, so you can explore everything that’s new for this month.  So see below or just visit to explore.

Norton 2011 Summer Attendance Breaks Museum Records

Gallery reinstallations, lobby redesign to build on visitor growth

Sixth Annual Moon Festival Celebrates Chinese Art and Culture on Sept. 10

Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film & Television closes Sept. 11

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (Sept. 1, 2011) – The Norton Museum of Art is thrilled to announce that the summer of 2011 has been one of the best attended summers in its 70-year history. A record-breaking July set the pace with more than 11,000 visitors. The museum remains on pace for its highest annual attendance in years, despite a two-and-a-half week closure— from Sept. 12-30—to reinstall the American and European galleries.

“Engaging our community is a primary part of the Norton’s mission, and certainly what Mr. Norton envisioned when he built this museum and left this wonderful legacy,” said Museum Director and CEO Hope Alswang. “We are grateful to the community for responding to, and supporting the Norton in such numbers, and we look forward to an equally rich fall.”

One of the reasons for the record summer attendance is a slate of strong exhibitions, including the highly-praised Altered States, A to Z: 26 Great Photographs from the Norton Collection), and especially Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film & Television, which has been extended through Sept. 11, the day before closing for the gallery reinstallations. (The daylong Sixth Annual Moon Festival on Sept. 10, which celebrates Chinese art and culture, also precedes the temporary closing.)

Other factors contributing to the increased summer attendance include:

·        The increasingly popular Art After Dark series, (Where Culture and Entertainment Meet!) which drew more than 2,200 visitors during June, July and August.

·        Visits by a record-setting number of nearly 4,000 young summer campers for guided tours and art projects.

·        The community’s increased awareness and use of the Museum’s Free Saturday admission policy. (The Museum is free to Palm Beach County residents the first Saturday of each month, and free to West Palm Beach residents every Saturday.)

The Museum will be even more welcoming and appealing to its growing number of visitors when it re-opens Oct. 1, (the first Saturday of the month). The reinstallation of the American and European galleries will provide a fresh perspective to the heart and soul of the Norton’s Permanent Collection, and a redesigned main lobby also will include Wi-Fi for guests.

On Oct. 1, curator-led tours of the reinstalled galleries will be available throughout the day. Special family activities are also planned, including the kickoff of a new DIY art project that will be a regular part of “first Saturday” programming.

For more information visit www.Norton.org or call 561-832-5196.
