2ND ANNUAL L-DUB FILM FESTIVAL

 

The Lake Worth Playhouse Stonzek Theatre is revving up for its second annual L-Dub Film Festival running almost nonstop September 30 – October 2.  With a mission to celebrate the art of filmmaking, foster an appreciation and provide opportunities for new creations, we are on our way to an outstanding run that will light up Lake Worth and draw the attention of all South Florida.

 

THE FILMS featured in the L-DUB Film Festival will include 8 music videos, 4 documentaries, 3 feature films and 34 shorts.  With entries being sent from all over Florida, New York, Detroit, California and England, the L-DUB is bringing the best of the best to this year’s festival.

 

THE OPENING NIGHT FILM will be the World Premiere of Equal Strength, a drama written and directed by Ika Santamaria.  Synopsis: Taylor Westrom will stop at nothing to ensure his animals are safe including risking his own life for his noble cause. But the deeper he digs, he brings to the surface conspiracies that were best left alone. He finds himself balancing on the ethical line of what’s morally right vs. what will help his cause.

SHORTS will be running in blocks throughout the three day run of the festival.  With more than 40 short films and music videos being featured, there is something for everyone and a smorgasbord board of quality work for even the most sensitive of palates.  An exciting new addition, received through a collaboration with Lake Worth’s sister city, South End on Sea England, we will be displaying a collection of winning shorts from their 2011 festival and will have the chance to send some of our short films to be featured in their festival next year.

THE CLOSING FILM is the Florida Premiere of Rats and Bullies, a documentary directed by Cassidy R. McMillan and Ray Buffer and written by Cassidy R. McMillan.  This heart wrenching story is one to make sure to see once in your life.  Synopsis: The gripping true story of 14 year old Dawn Marie Wesley.  After being bullied and threatened with death by three girls at her school, hung herself with her dog’s leash. In the suicide note she left behind, she named the three girls. The incident, which outraged a nation and fueled a groundbreaking investigation by Canada’s Crown, marks the first time in America were teens are made to stand trial for bullying.

 


 

SEMINARS will be running Saturday and Sunday afternoons on a variety of subjects of interest to filmmakers and fans alike.  They provide a time to meet with industry professionals in a relaxed, intimate Q&A environment adjacent to the Stonzek Theatre.

 

Saturday 2-3pm

VFX/CGI Supervisor, Dean Lyon, is back by popular demand after a wildly successful seminar at the 1st L-DUB Film Festival.  As a successful VFX Supervisor and Entrepreneur, Dean will be providing a detailed, introspective look at the relationship between VFX and the film making process.  The session will be devoted to analyzing various films and video clips to determine how they were created, followed by discussing the potential of how to improve on the overall process, a review of past and present theories and techniques and a review of strategies for budgeting, planning and applying cutting edge technologies.  

 

Saturday 3-4pm

-Film Critic, Dan Hudak, will be providing an insider’s view on film festivals from a judge’s perspective.  Dan has worked extensively as a film critic in print, radio, television and online with ESPN, ABC News, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, CNN, indieWire and Sun-Sentinel to name a few.  The Q&A seminar will focus on showcasing films that were successfully executed with low budgets from the perspective on what a judge looks for.

 

Saturday 5-6pm

-The Palm Beach County Film Commission will have a seasoned representative to provide information and advice on filmmaking in Palm Beach County in a comprehensive Q & A session.

 

Sunday 1-2pm

-Hollywood actor, Garrett M. Brown, will be conducting a Q&A seminar that is a must for up and coming actors, filmmakers and film enthusiasts alike.  Entitled How Do We Get Here From There?, it is a seminar for those wondering how a guy who was going to be a doctor in college ended up on stage and on TV and in films – and still wishes he could be a doctor – only now as a juicy role!

 

Sunday 2-3pm

-Filmmaker, Frank Eberling will share his experiences and information on the steps it takes to get your film off the ground.  He will motivate you and show you how you can make it happen for yourself in today’s cut-throat industry in his seminar entitled Producing Your First Micro-Budget Film.  Frank Eberling has been a filmmaker in South Florida for forty years, producing 3,000 film and television broadcast projects as producer, writer, director and cinematographer. His work has earned him an Emmy, a Cine Golden Eagle, six Telly’s and several other prestigious writing and producing awards.

 

Sunday 4-5pm

Screenwriter, Michael Chasin, will be hosting a talk on screenwriting and dramatic structure.  Michael is a local South Florida screenwriter and multiple award winning filmmaker (including Best Screenplay) with experience ranging from writing, directing, editing, producing, consulting and instructing.  In addition, he has had past experience as a film festival screenplay judge.   The Football Game as a Screenplay will be a seminar focusing on the dramatic structure in film to assist filmmakers in creating tight, focused and enticing screenplays.

 

INDUSTRY COLLABORATION is something we are promoting and encouraging as a vital component to the festival.  In this effort, the L-DUB Film Festival will be providing space and time for filmmakers to meet, collaborate and plan.

 

MEETING SPACE will be available for filmmakers during the entire run of the festival in the seminar room around the seminar schedule.  It is open for their use to socialize, network and interact with other local filmmakers in a relaxed environment that caters to fostering new relationships, establishing business connections, deal making, engaging in creative discussions and learning from other professionals in the industry.  After last year’s large success at connecting new filmmakers to collaborate on projects which are being featured in this year’s festival or are now in development, we felt it was an integral part of our festival to provide them a space to meet.

 

A FILMMAKER RECEPTION will be held next door to the Stonzek Theatre on Friday, September 30 at 8pm.  It provides a networking opportunity for directors and producers in attendance to meet together in a party atmosphere while enjoying complimentary snacks and beer.

 


 

CELEBRATIONS are an integral part of every festival and L-DUB has brought the fun!  Don’t miss out on opportunities to party with filmmakers and friends as we honor the artistry of film and celebrate the artists.

 

THE SATURDAY NIGHT PARTY will be an explosion of entertainment that will wake up the neighborhood including live music from The Mobile Homies and celebrity bartenders Garrett M. Brown (L-DUB’s Special Guest) and Leslie Streeter (The Palm Beach Post)!  Located at The Cottage Restaurant & Lounge (just a few blocks from the festival) on Saturday, October 1 from 8-11pm, the L-DUB Film Festival will be kicking back and hanging out and invites filmmakers to bring their friends and celebrate as only Lake Worth knows how.  Happy Hour prices will keep the drinks flowing from 8-11pm.

 

THE AWARDS CEREMONY will be held Sunday, October 2 at 7pm on the Main Stage of the Lake Worth Playhouse.  Jury awards will be given for Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Short and Best Music Video.  Audience Choice Awards will also be given in the same categories.  Join us to walk the red carpet and wrap up what is sure to be another great year!

 

THE PEOPLE

 

A SPECIAL GUEST will be joining us for the 2011 L-Dub Film Festival.  Garrett M. Brown is a successful actor with over 200 Film and TV credits spanning three decades and including HBO’s Big Love, Uncle Buck, Sisters, I am Number 4, Kick Ass, Fun with Dick and Jane, CSI, The O.C., That 70’s Show and Boston Legal to name a few. While working on the NBC series, Sisters, he helped create the Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA) Youth Theatre, a theater program for at-risk kids in inner city LA. He also was instrumental in developing a Playwrights Unit for EST-LA, led by such writers as Jose Rivera, Neil Cuthbert, and Carole Real.

 

He has been privileged to work with and counsel such emerging actors and film-makers as Chris Pine, Nicholas Cage, Jim Carrey, Diana Agron, Maya Lawson, Annika Marks, Graham Sibley, Greg Robbins, James Napoli, Dale Peterson, and Tim Attewell. Garrett M. Brown truly embodies the vibe of our festival and will be honored with our 2011 Community Spirit Award.

 

OUR FESTIVAL DIRECTOR this year is Kenneth Marc Greenbaum, a home-grown Floridian Filmmaker and owner of Majic Robot Films.  As an industry professional, he is catering the festival to meet the specific needs, wants and interests of film makers.  “We truly have a great range of talent to showcase!  I am excited to present to South Florida a great range of filmmaking talent that has truly set them and the L-DUB Film Festival apart.”

 

OUR FOUNDING DIRECTOR, SteevJBrown, is returning!  After the wild success of last year’s L-DUB Film Festival, we have brought back SteevJ to spin his magic in creating another great year.  SteevJ currently lives in Los Angeles and is in the process of producing two of his own reality shows.

Forging Ahead- The Art of the Blacksmith

Wellington artist Norman Gitzen brings his forge to the Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery on Friday, October 7 from 6-9 PM.  He will be demonstrating Blacksmith techniques in front of the gallery.  Clay Glass Metal Stone gallery is located at 605 Lake Avenue in Downtown Lake Worth.

Best known for his “Siren”, the provocative mermaid that was banned in Wellington, Gitzen has taken his black-smithing skills to high art form creating large scale ornate gates, intricately crafted elements of his sculptural creations and his newly designed jewelry.  He will be setting up his forge in front of the gallery branding wood circles with hearts, peace signs and whale’s tails.

 

An ardent conservationist, a portion of  of Gitzen’s sales that evening will be donated to the Marshall Wildlife Foundation.  He created the “Vanishing” series of sculptures to highlight the loss of some of our rarer species from the planet.  His forged metal segments  form turtles, dolphins and whales with growing gaps in their façade, metaphorically indicating their disappearance from the planet.

      New York Times senior financial writer Diana Henriques brings an up close look at financial swindler Bernie Madoff to the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches Oct. 3. Henriques is author of the best-selling Madoff book Wizard of Lies and Barnes & Noble will host a book signing and sale during the event.

 

     The noon luncheon is being held at the Cohen Pavilion at the Kravis Center, 701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach.  Public tickets are $55 and must be purchased in advance by calling the Forum Club at: (561) 304-0570. 

 

     Madoff, who is estimated to have swindled friends, relatives and international investors out of $65 billion, made Palm Beach both his playground and prey ground.  Henriques has largely specialized in investigative reporting on white-collar crime, market regulation and corporate governance.  She led the New York Times coverage of the Madoff story since it broke and was the first journalist to interview him in prison.

Palm Beach Gardens, FL – Come out, have a drink and find a date while
helping the Big Dogs! On Thursday, September 22nd from 6-11pm, Big Dog Ranch Rescue will be partnering up with Dirty Martini in Downtown at
The Gardens for a Dirty Dog Auction. A $50 donation at the door will
allow you a complimentary cocktail, appetizers, tastings from SX
Liquors and amazing entertainment.
There will be food and drink flowing from 6-7pm for all Big Dog Ranch
Supporters. At 7pm there will be a Bachelor/Bachelorette Auction with
some of the area’s hottest singles, big dogs, small dogs and puppies.
After the auction, stay and enjoy live entertainment from the resident
band. 100% of all monies raised will go directly to help the Ranch. We
will also be having a Toys 4Pups Drive. We are in need of toys,
blankets, towels and tennis balls.

The Palms West Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Wellington have teamed up once again to bring the Fall Festival to the community of Wellington.  This very special spooky Halloween event will take place at Village Park, 11700 Pierson Road in Wellington on Saturday, October 22nd, 2011 at 6:00 PM.
