Belfast, Ireland:  From Troubled to Tremendous

By Terri Marshall

Photos by Gregory Holder

For many years Army checkpoints circled the city of Belfast.  Bombings and violence were part of life in the capital city of Northern Ireland as The Troubles, a civil conflict between its Roman Catholic and Protestant populations, raged on from 1969 until 1999.  Not surprisingly Belfast was not considered much of a tourist destination throughout those troubled years.  Today, however, Belfast is transformed.  Gone are the Army checkpoints, peace has taken over the city and although there are certainly numerous political murals and reminders of  its troubled past, Belfast is a must see destination in Europe.

In order to truly appreciate the transformation of Belfast City, I believe it is important to witness the evidence of its troubled past along with the urban regeneration of the Titanic Quarter, the Queens Quarter and the City Centre.  The best way to learn about all of this is to take a world famous Black Taxi Tour.   Unlike a group bus tour, your Black Taxi Tour will be customized to include the places you most want to see and each driver is a certified guide with the Northern Ireland Tourism Board.  Not only will you come away informed, you are guaranteed to be entertained!  Our guide, Billy Scott, grew up in Belfast giving him a unique perspective of the city’s transformation. Billy took us to the destinations covered in this article.  His wit and humor were a bonus – plus the black taxis look really cool! http://www.gotobelfast.com

The streets of Belfast
The streets of Belfast

Belfast has seen more than its share of industrial accomplishments.  Nowhere is this more evident than in the Titanic Quarter.  The Harland and Wolff shipyard is the location of the world’s largest dry dock.  Its giant cranes – known as Samson and Goliath – make an imposing statement to this effect against the Belfast skyline.  It is here that the ill-fated Titanic was built and where she left her last footprint on dry land.  Some of the world’s largest super tankers were also built here as was Titanic’s little sister, the Nomadic.  Used as a tender for the Titanic and the Olympic, Nomadic ferried First Class passengers including Benjamin Guggenheim and the “unsinkable Molly Brown” to the Titanic for her maiden voyage.  She is currently being restored to her former glory and will be completed for Titanic’s 100th anniversary in 2012.  This will coincide with the opening of a high tech Titanic experience exhibit.  Currently there are several tour options available to help you experience the birth of this great ship.  http://www.titanictours-belfast.co.uk/

Belfast is a Victorian city rich in architectural heritage.  The city centre is home to numerous Victorian and Edwardian landmark buildings.  The Custom’s House is a spectacular example of 1857 Italian architecture.  Formerly known as “Speaker’s Corner”, the steps of the Custom House was the place people would go to speak about everything from politics and religion to the evils of ping pong!  Today the site is one of Belfast’s major venues for outdoor concerts and festivals.

The Albert Memorial Clock is located nearby in Queens Square.  Constructed from 1865 to 1869, this 113 feet tall clock tower is one of Belfast’s most famous landmarks.  As a result of being built on wooden piles on marshy land around the River Farset, the top of the tower leans four feet off the perpendicular giving Belfast its own leaning tower!

ireland-2011-1272
Belfast City Hall

Finished in 1906, Belfast City Hall was built to reflect Belfast’s city status which was granted by Queen Victoria in 1888.  This magnificent classical renaissance structure reflected the great ambition and optimism of Belfast at the time.  There are several connections between Belfast City Hall and the Titanic including a Titanic Memorial, sculpted by Thomas Brock, which pays tribute to 22 men who lost their lives on the ship.  Free public tours are given Monday through Saturday.  http://www.discovernorthernireland.com

The extremely ornate Crown Liquor Saloon, designed by Joseph Anderson in 1876, is often referred to as the world’s most beautiful bar.  Built in the Victorian era, the saloon has ten cozy and elaborately carved wooden booths referred to as “snugs”.  Inside each snug there are gun metal plates for striking matches and an antique bell system used to alert the bar staff when the drinks were empty.  These Victorian snugs have witnessed everything from revolutionary plotting to ladies engaged in non-Victorian behavior!  http://www.crownbar.com

The Grand Opera House is the place to go for performing arts in Belfast.  The architecture has a distinctly oriental theme and was completed in 1895.  Located next to Hotel Europa – the most bombed hotel in the world – the Grand Opera House was also bombed several times during The Troubles but has now been restored to its former glory.

Belfast is famous for its many wall murals across the city.  There are paintings of sports legends, the Titanic and of course many religious and political murals.  The Shankill District and the Falls Districtireland-2011-0791 is a small area of Belfast which, during The Troubles, was the center of the extreme hatred between the Protestants and the Catholics.  It is here that you will witness the disturbing reminders of the violence the residents endured for so many years.  It is a sobering experience to watch children walking from school past murals of machine guns, blood and violence.  However, some of the more violent murals have been replaced with positive scenes in recent years in an effort to encourage renewal.  Between these areas stands the Peace Wall.  Originally built as a divider between the Protestant and Catholic neighborhoods, the wall sections had gates which were closed at night to control the violence.  In 2009 graffiti artists were called in to paint the Peace Wall and today it is covered with messages of peace and encouragement from people all over the world including the Dahli Lama, Bill Clinton and your travel writer!   It is a moving experience to stand where there was once so much violence and read all the messages of peace and hope.

Despite its troubled past, Belfast residents have great pride in their city.  New construction is everywhere and there is a clear focus on bringing tourism to this great city.  There are numerousireland-2011-085 lodging options ranging from bed & breakfasts to hostels to elegant hotels.  The Malmaison in Belfast’s city centre has created a sexy stylish hotel in a former seed warehouse.  The hotel is a beautiful blend of the old and the new – just like Belfast City.  In fact, the hotel’s tag line, “Dare to be Different”, is appropriate not only for the hotel but for the entire city of Belfast.  http://www.malmaison.com/

Belfast is different.  The people are genuine, warm and resilient much like the city they call home.  Transformed from troubled to tremendous, Belfast is a place you do not want to miss!

April, 2011 – Great Birthday Parties

Birthday Party Ideas

By Krista Martinelli

This month I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight a few great options when it comes to planning your child’s birthday party.  Of course, I’m also a big fan of the party at home, if you have the space and fortitude to do it.  But fellow parents, I think it’s safe to say that sometimes you need a break. Sometimes you need a great place to handle all of the fun, chaos and mess that comes with a large group of young kids.

Calling All Young Picasso Types!

My five-year-old daughter recently attended a birthday party at Picasso’s Paint-Your-Own-Pottery and loved it!  It was a delightful experience, and each child gets to choose a piece of pottery to paint. The staff at Picasso’s goes above and beyond. When you schedule your Picasso’s party, you get a festive, private party room for two hours, a dedicated Picasso’s studio assistant, and a commemorative plate for the guests of honor to sign, balloons, invitations, music and more!  Just bring your own cake and you’re done.  Nothing else to do. The pottery will be fired/glazed and ready for pick up in one week. All of the young staff is extremely helpful and encouraging. Once you’ve had a taste of Picasso’s (located at Lantana Rd. and Jog Rd. in Lake Worth), you will definitely be back. Picasso’s can be reached at (561) 439-4000.

Playmobil FunPark – Letting Your Imagination Soar!

Last year my 3-year-old had a fabulous dinosaur-themed birthday party at Playmobil FunPark in Palm Beach Gardens.  Other party themes include princesses, construction, pirates and more (call for details). If you’ve never made the trip up to Playmobil FunPark before, playmobilbdayyou need to check it out.  Think of it as a castle that was designed for kids to test out and play with Playmobil toys – that’s what it is.  The admission price on any day of the week is just $1 per person. Another plus, I’ve overheard other moms saying that the place is “immaculate” and “the cleanest” out of all of the kids’ play places they have visited. It’s all true.  It’s a wonderful place to play and, as expected, a wonderful place to have a child’s birthday party. The manager Lucy oversees every detail and is outstandingly helpful.  Her staff is terrific with young children too.  The party includes a little show on stage with a few songs and games, according to your selected theme. And yes, you can relax with this party too.  They take care of every detail – the only thing you need to bring is the cake. The birthday area of Playmobil FunPark is adorable and just perfect for young kids. It includes a long kids’ table for eating your cake, plus a throne for your little queen or king to sit at the head of the table. Check out Playmobil for your next birthday party, located at 8031 North Military Trail in Palm Beach Gardens or just give them a call at (561) 691-9880.

My Gym – Jump, Roll, Slide and Play Together!

We’ve been to a few My Gym birthday parties over the past years. It’s a fun, hassle-free party where the kids get some good exercise as well as some quality “circle time.” The parties, which usually last 1.5 to 2 hours, offer games, gymnastics, “Space Flight,” puppets, rides, mygymbdayfunsongs and exciting birthday events, all led by the friendly staff. Kids engage in constant play and interaction during the entire birthday party. For a sneak peak of My Gym birthday parties, see the video on their website. As a parent, I’ve found that the interaction among the little ones is best conducted by a circle time; so it’s nice that My Gym birthday parties do just that, using circle time at the beginning and end of the party to bring friends and family together. Located just on the east side of 441 in the BJ’s plaza (north of Southern Blvd.), the Royal Palm Beach My Gym is an ideal place for a party. Call them at (561) 713-2768 for details.

Standing Ovation – Let Your Child Be the Star!

My neighbors had a Standing Ovation birthday party for their daughter and were thoroughly impressed with how much fun it was, as well as being pleased with the terrific play that was put on at the very end. In fact their popular “Production Birthday Parties” have attracted a lot of attention, winning the South Florida Parenting Kids’ Crown Award for the “most creative birthday party.” Within the course of a three-hour birthday party, the kids pull together and do a full production, where the birthday kid is the star of the show.  The birthday kid chooses from a variety of different, age-appropriate scripts for her birthday show. Some examples include “Tinkerbell and the Pirates,” “Princess’ Puzzle,” “Superhero Play,” “Peter and the Pirates” and “Mount Olympus.” Older kids can choose to do the ever-popular Vampire Murder Mystery. The birthday child gets to assign the parts to the other young stars. A Standing Ovation Theater Director then gives each actor their lines and works on blocking for the show. After an acting class and a warm-up , it’s time for a break (the perfect time for pizza, etc.)  Then after a couple of run-throughs of the script, it’s onto the dress rehearsal when the kids have a ball getting into their costumes. The parents come back for the last 30 minutes to see the big show, which includes an adult narrator for some of the action and lighting (for the finishing touches). The young stars all celebrate after the show with birthday cake. Parents love it and kids do too! For more information, call Standing Ovation Performing Arts (located at Le Chalet and Military Trail in Boynton Beach), (561) 734-0187.

March, 2011 – Challenge of the Americas Fundraises for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation

2011 Challenge of the Americas Raises $275,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation

Wellington, FL – March 22, 2011 – The tenth annual Challenge of the Americas competition and Gala were held Saturday evening, March12, at the beautiful International Polo Club Palm Beach. Held as a benefit for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Play for P.I.N.K., the event raised approximately $275,000 in support of research to help find a cure for this disease that has affected so many lives.

The Challenge Gala got underway following an exciting evening of equestrian competition that included the first ever four-on-four polo match, where Team Vanderbilt-Ingram proved victorious.  Following polo the musical quadrille team challenge commenced with Team Purina USA earning the winning score in this fantabulous event.  This year’s gala, a sold-out affair with almost 600 in attendance, featured an evening of dinner and dancing and was held in the New Nespresso Lodge just off Piaget Field at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.  The sit-down dinner, silent auction and dancing was enjoyed by top riders, trainers and judges from the equestrian world of dressage and polo, along with generous sponsors and supporters.

Held as a benefit for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation over the last ten years, the Challenge of the Americas has raised over 1.5 million since its inception in 2002. This year they will once again add a generous donation to that total. President of Play For P.I.N.K., spoke at the Gala and acknowledged all that Challenge of the Americas has done for breast cancer research. Play For P.I.N.K. (Prevention, Immediate diagnosis, New technology, Knowledge) is a grassroots organization dedicated to raising funds to fight breast cancer, by creating and promoting awareness of breast cancer through sporting and lifestyle events. They contribute 100% of all funds raised to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Play for P.I.N.K. President Laura Lassman stated, “Thank you so much to all of you  for your generous support, which goes to fund an army of the most incredible researchers in the world.  We support 172 researchers in 12 countries and have worked to make great strides to fight this disease.  Sixteen years ago we were working to see if we could cure cancer, now we are working to figure out when!  I hope that one day soon we will have this fabulous event to celebrate the breakthrough that we have beaten this disease!”

Mary Ross, who lost her mother to breast cancer, and created the event in memory of her mother ten years ago, created the Challenge of the Americas.  She, along with a talented committee put together this fabulous event.  New to this year’s event, was a four-on-four polo match which was organized by Georgette Escobar.  Escobar, wife of 7-goal polo player Luis Escobar, is a breast cancer survivor and spoke during the event about her battle with the disease.

Escobar stood in front of the evening’s crowd with seven of her closest friends to speak about her fight.  “I stand here in front of you with seven of my closest friends to show you that one in eight woman is diagnosed with breast cancer.  I was the one of eight, and with the help of research, my cancer was detected early.  Because of such advances in technology and research, I was able to fight the disease.”  Escobar’s 91-year-old grandmother, also a breast cancer survivor, was in attendance to show her support for the cause and Escobar’s recovery.

“I also would like to thank Mary Ross for all she’s done for the fight against Breast Cancer.  She is an incredible woman and has done so much for this disease!”

Many companies and organizations came together to help support the Challenge of the Americas through their sponsorship. Generous sponsors included: The International Polo Club Palm Beach; SSG Gloves – Team Can/America; Purina Mills – Team USA; The Seley Parker Group of Merrill Lynch – Team International; Polo Sponsor: Arenus; Event Sponsors: USDF; Cunningham & Cunningham Livestock Insurance; , MatchnRide.com, Back on Track, Wellington Classic Dressage, Palm Beach Equine Clinic, Red Barn Feed & Supply, The Tackeria, Ecogold, Bethesda Women’s Health Center, Dover Saddlery, King Ferry Winery, Jamaica Tent, Boca West Country Club, EQLS and Sunbelt Rentals.

TAI CHI HEALTHY CHOICE FOR PEOPLE WITH ARTHRITIS

Arthritis Foundation Offers New Joint-Safe Activity

[W.P.B.] – For centuries, Tai Chi has been practiced in China as an effective exercise for physical and mental well-being.  Now, the Arthritis Foundation is launching a new joint-safe Tai Chi program designed to improve the quality of life for people with arthritis, as more and more people turn to alternative approaches to address chronic conditions.

Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation is designed for people of all ages seeking a joint-safe exercise routine, but particularly those with mild to moderate arthritis.  Research shows moderate physical activity helps people with arthritis feel better and relieves pain.  Tai Chi may be especially suitable for people with joint problems because its movements are slow and gentle, and the level of exertion can be adjusted to suit each person’s physical condition.  In addition, the movements in the style of Tai Chi used by the Arthritis Foundation are performed at higher stances, which make it easier and more comfortable to learn.

The benefits of Tai Chi may include reduced pain and stiffness, improved concentration and memory, greater balance, increased flexibility, enhanced muscle strength, along with improved ability to cope with stress and depression.

Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation will take place on Wednesdays & Fridays – beginner class 10:00 am, intermediate class 11:00 am  beginning April 6, 2011 at the Arthritis Foundation, 400 Hibiscus Street, West Palm Beach.   The sessions will run for 5 weeks, and the cost is $66.   All classes are taught by instructors who have undergone a special Arthritis Foundation instructor-training workshop.

To register for Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation or for more information, contact Susie Rhodes at 561-833-1133.

THE YWCA TAKES A STAND AGAINST RACISM
Over 250,000 individuals expected to take a Stand Against Racism

“Today, the YWCA of Palm Beach County is calling on all local organizations, corporations, churches and other houses of worship, government agencies and individuals in the county to join the YWCA by participating in the 2011 “Stand Against Racism,” taking place on Friday, April 29, announced Suzanne Turner YWCA Chief Executive Officer. “Any group of any size that believes in a society free of racism is invited to join us.”

In 2010, this event attracted over 2,000 partnering organizations across the nation that became participating sites by hosting local “Stands”. Over a quarter million individuals took a stand against racism at one of the participating sites. They committed themselves to a lifetime of promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all people in their community and in the world. This powerful, unified, effort helped to raise awareness that racism hurts everyone. Participants ranged from school-age children to elected officials, executives of large corporations, church leaders, and others. Racism affects everyone.

Any organization or group of individuals can become a participating site by signing up through the “Stand Against Racism” Web site: www.StandAgainstRacism.org., says Turner.  A participating site will host their own “Stand Against Racism” event at its individual location (which can be private or open to the public). Participation in the “Stand Against Racism” is free and becoming a participating site is very simple.  The YWCA will provide all the necessary materials and documents, including a How to Run the Event Template that can be customized to meet the organization’s needs. Each organization’s “Stand” will range from gatherings at work to larger scale “Stands” like rallies and marches. No matter what shape each “Stand” takes in each participating site, all activities will echo the theme “racism is unacceptable.” Organizations are urged to visit www.StandAgainstRacism.org to join this important movement.

The YWCA’s “Stand Against Racism” a collaboration of over 70 YWCA Associations nationwide, is an annual event managed by the YWCA Trenton and the YWCA Princeton in New Jersey. The YWCAs in America and around the world have a rich history of advocating for racial justice. Throughout its history, the YWCA has been at the forefront of most major movements in the United States as a pioneer in race relations. The YWCA with its mission to eliminate racism intends to affect real change in the lives of families, friends and co-workers through a process that identifies and eradicates the barriers that divide us and that perpetuate racism and other forms of oppression.  As individuals learn what has kept us apart, they will develop new ways of working cooperatively by creating new models of shared resources and perspectives. In October 2009, the YWCA of Palm Beach County launched the “Community Chats for Action” program consisting of 6 weeks of dialogue among persons of various races resulting in a number of recommendations for further activity in this community to help make us more united. “Stand Against Racism” was one of those selected actions.

For more details, please visit www.StandAgainstRacism.org.  For local information, please contact YWCA of Palm Beach County, 561-640-0050, Ext. 137. The YWCA of Palm Beach County seeks to bring people together across communities for one common goal—greater community unity through the elimination of racism—thus all businesses, and organizations in Palm Beach county are being asked to make their  voices heard by joining the “Stand Against Racism”.
