Faith Farm Wins the Going Green Contest!

Faith Farm Ministries was recipient of the Top Award in the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties’ 2011 Nonprofits Going Green Contest as announced on April 16, 2011, at the 3rd Annual e4 Sustainability Summit at the Waterfront and City Commons in West Palm Beach.  The contest was sponsored by Environmental Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation, Florida Power & Light and Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Company.

Faith Farm Ministries received the “Barbara Groves Eco-Impact Award” in the amount of $7,500.  The award, created in honor of the local philanthropist, recognizes the organization for “showing the greatest commitment to greening efforts by reducing energy dependence, limiting waste and conserving water accomplished through the most cost-efficient means.”

Dean O. Webb, Executive Director of the three Faith Farm Ministries’ locations in Boynton Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Okeechobee, congratulated Boynton Beach staff members Troy Hardy, Campus Director, an excellent facilitator, Christopher Milu, Assistant Campus Director, who was the driving force behind the application, and Mark LaCount, Recycling Supervisor, who is the driving force behind recycling efforts at all campuses, teaching other staff members and maximizing the recycling efforts.

Through Mark’s efforts, more than one million pounds of scrap was kept out of the public landfills and thousands of dollars were saved on dumping fees, while earning revenue of $128,000 to help fund our 9 month, residential drug and alcohol recovery program for men and women who have lost control of their lives due to struggles with addiction.  Free to the students in recovery, the Faith Farm program is funded through your donations and purchases at our Thrift Stores and other initiatives like that of our recycling program.

Upon learning of the award, Mr. Webb wrote to his staff saying, “I am so glad to be associated with such a great group of people in this ministry.  God sees what a difference you make on a daily basis … NOW, the community also knows about our efforts to be responsible to our environment.”

Vero Beach Kick-A-Thon to benefit children and adults with Muscular Dystrophy

Vero Beach, FL – The Vero Beach Karate Association (VBKA) will be holding a kick-a-thon the week of April 18th to raise much needed funds for children and adults with neuromuscular diseases. The annual kick-a-thon fundraiser is nothing new to our community. For over 18 years the Vero Beach Karate Association has held the kick-a-thon and its students have raised over $142,900 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. “The Muscular Dystrophy Association is the right charity for our school,” said Bill Willis, Head Instructor of the Vero Beach Karate Association.  “Our students are fortunate that they can do the things they do physically and we work to help them recognize this blessing and use it to help others in their community who can’t do what they do.”

“More than a fundraising opportunity, the Vero Beach Karate Kick-a-thon is designed to be both educational and fun for all participants.  The children learn about helping others and they have fun doing it,” said Brandy Miller, MDA Director of Business Development.

April, 2011 – Local Resident Releases DVD for Back Pain Sufferers

LOCAL RESIDENT RELEASES DVD FOR BACK PAIN SUFFERERS

Local resident and postural alignment specialist, Cheryl Alker, has released a DVD aimed specifically at back pain sufferers in the hope of helping this huge population to take a proactive approach to their back pain.

Cheryl has worked in the health and fitness industry for over 30 years and for the past 10 years has specialized in the niche area of flexibility, core strength and postural alignment. “I have worked with literally hundreds of back pain sufferers over the years” she says “the majority of pain I deal with are as a result of short tight muscles drawing the bones out of alignment, causing poor joint mobility, poor functionality, pain and discomfort”.

The statistics are staggering:-

·         31 million Americans experience low-back pain at any one time.

·         One half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year.

·         Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work.  In fact, back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory conditions.

·         Most cases of back pain are mechanical or non-organic, meaning they are not caused by conditions such as inflammatory arthritis, infection, fracture or cancer.

·         Americans spend a staggering $50 billion each year on back pain – and that is just for the more easily identified costs.

·         One third of all Americans over age 18 had a back problem in the past five years severe enough for them to seek professional help.

·         Experts estimate that as many as 80% of all of us will experience a back problem at some time in our lives.

“My Stretch Results program has a proven record in the prevention and management of back, neck and shoulder pain” explains Alker “the program focuses on lengthening and elongating the muscles that are causing poor joint mobility resulting in a body able to move as it was intended; a body free from pain.”

Cheryl’s Stretch Results clients have some amazing testimonials; however, one client was more impressed by the fact that he was able to out drive his friends by 30 yards on the golf course than playing a round of golf without his back brace for the first time in ten years!

“I am delighted to be able to help people. Back pain is not only constant but can affect your whole demeanor” says Alker “normally cheerful people can become miserable and depressed when they are in  debilitating pain, and who can blame them?” she says. “The most wonderful thing about my program is that the results are almost instantaneous, people actually feel a difference after their first session!”

If you would like more information about the Stretch Results program and the Back Pain DVD please call Cheryl Alker on 561 889 3738 or go to www.stretchresults.com.

ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION’S ANNUAL MAGIC OF CARING Children’s FASHION SHOW AND LUNCHEON nets $50,000

The 2011 Arthritis Foundation’s 14th Annual Magic of Caring Children’s Fashion Show and Luncheon was truly a magical event this year, raising $50,000 on behalf of children with Juvenile Arthritis.  Deborah Jaffe and Christine Pitts, Co-Chairwomen for the event, were pleased to announce that the money will enable the Arthritis Foundation to send South Florida children with Juvenile Arthritis to summer camps designed specifically for children with arthritis.

moc-2011-chairsThe luncheon was held at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott, with fashions provided by Beall’s Florida Store.  The models were all children from this area who have been diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis and understand the pain and rigors that accompany the disease.  This event allows these kids, who live with daily pain, to shine in the spotlight, while spreading the word that ‘Kids Get Arthritis Too’. More than 50 million Americans currently battle arthritis, which is one of the nation’s leading causes of disability, affecting nearly 5 million children and adults in Florida alone, each year.

The Arthritis Foundation’s Mid East Region is located in West Palm Beach and funds raised from events like this one help provide local services that include four free clinics offering physician care for the medically indigent, wellness programs, Tai Chi & Aquatic Exercise classes, The Quick Family Rehabilitation Center, and a series of educational lectures that are free and open to the public.

For more information on local arthritis programs, or to volunteer, please contact Susie Rhodes at (561) 833-1133.
