May, 2011 – Driver License Appointments Go Live

DRIVER LICENSE APPOINTMENTS GO LIVE ON WEB

West Palm Beach – Anne M. Gannon, Constitutional Tax Collector, announces the launch of driver license appointments during a ceremony at her Royal Palm Beach Service Center this morning.  “As of this morning, our appointment link is live,” said Gannon.  “It’s easy.  Just go to our website at www.taxcollectorpbc.com and click on the appointment button. This will lead you into the DMV appointment system.”

Many of Gannon’s Service Centers are dealing with long lines and extended wait times since the agency began offering full Driver License services the Fall of 2010.  The Florida Legislature transferred the issuing of driver licenses to county tax collectors in the 2010 legislative session.

“No one likes to wait. The fact is that the new service requirement is bringing people into already crowded offices.  Combine that with the new federal Real ID requirement and the result is long lines,” says Gannon.  “I would like to thank the DMV for their assistance in bringing us into their appointment system.”

Driver License appointments are now available at each service center location with the exception of Lake Worth which does not offer driver license services.  The public will be able to make an appointment up to three months in advance.  “This is a great customer service tool for those who want to plan ahead.  I just want to caution the public that appointments are not a panacea for a crowded office because the federal requirements require everyone to visit a center for Real ID compliant documents.” Gannon said.  “There is no silver bullet here or believe me I would use it.”

Gannon has attacked wait times through efforts such as assigning staff to triage waiting lines so people without required documents are alerted and don’t stay in line, issuing instant Q- Flow tickets to those who are waiting for services other than driver licenses, encouraging the use of drop boxes and web payments, and offering automobile dealers an option to use a private titling company.

The “License to Drive” community awareness program was developed to help people better prepare for what the Tax Collector characterizes as a time consuming and often complicated process.   Her multicultural “License to Drive” Toolkit   includes a document organizer which lists the federally required documents, offers suggestions for replacement of lost or missing documents, and doubles as storage envelope.  The toolkit includes useful checklists for U.S. citizens, non-citizens, immigrants and Canadians.  The kits can be downloaded at www.taxcollectorpbc.com

PALM BEACH COUNTY KIDS NEED HELP GETTING TO SUMMER CAMP

Salvation Army Looking for “Angels” to Sponsor Local Children

West Palm Beach, FL (6 May 2011)  Hiking in the woods, learning how to weave a lanyard, singing songs by the campfire — some of our fondest childhood memories come from summer camp.

For the neediest children in Palm Beach County, these simple joys seem unattainable. These at-risk kids will spend their summer wandering the mean streets or hanging out with other idle kids — many of them bad influences… a recipe for trouble.

But The Salvation Army can help struggling local families avoid such an outcome for their children. Last year in the United States, thousands of children attended some 48 Salvation Army residential camps. “It’s an experience not to be missed,” observes Palm Beach County Area Commander Major Thomas McWilliams. “Time spent at camp can be a life-changing experience for kids. It can instill feelings of self-worth, open up the world and offer hope for the future.”

Area Commander, Major McWilliams reports that last summer the citizens of Palm Beach County gave this precious gift of overnight camp to 120 local children some of whom had never in their lives experienced the wonders of nature. In addition to overnight camp, The Salvation Army provides three day camps in Palm Beach County to nearly 1,788 more local children.  Through donations, underprivileged kids get to go to camps where they play sports, swim, explore the outdoors and make crafts in additional to summer day camps.  And beyond the recreation, with the help of trained counselors they learned how to get along with a diverse group of neighbors, dealing with the troubling issues and concerns that challenge them in their daily lives.

“We are so grateful to our friends who sponsor these children,” he says. “What a difference their generosity makes in children’s lives. The kids not only enjoy nutritious meals and explore the great outdoors, they learned new life-skills and get to interact with caring adults who listen to them and show them love and concern.

The Salvation Army of Palm Beach County is currently seeking sponsorship for local children to attend summer camp in 2011. “School will be ending soon,” Major McWilliams points out. “There are lots of spots left and not enough money to fill them. I hope the community will come through for these deserving kids. For many of them, it’s the highlight of the whole year.”

Monetary donations can be contributed by visiting www.salvationarmypalmbeachcounty.org; calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY and designate “2011 Summer Camp.”  Checks can be made out to:

 American Cancer Society Announces

Relay For Life Wellington May 14 – 15

Wellington, FL — Wellington’s walkers go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. This “celebration of life” brings numerous groups and individuals concerned about cancer together for a unified effort to fight back.

Teams of enthusiastic citizens will gather at The Village Park in Wellington for an overnight relay against cancer from 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 14 until Sunday morning, May 15, 2011.

Relay For Life is a unique fundraising event that allows participants from all walks of life — including patients, medical support staff, corporations, civic organizations, churches and community volunteers — to join together to fight cancer. Relay For Life reminds us that progress has been made in the fight against cancer and that everyone who participates is making a difference.

Relay For Life opens as cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) walk or wheelchair the first lap. This is an emotional time and sets the stage for the importance of each participant’s contribution. A festive atmosphere always develops around the track area at these events. As you make new friends and spend time with old ones, the Relay heats up and the camp-out begins. An atmosphere of camaraderie is created with team members entertaining each other:  eating, playing games, and, of course, walking for a great cause.

Highlighting the evening is the Luminaria Cerremony held after dark to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who have lost the battle against cancer. The luminarias line the track and are left burning throughout the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions.

“Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fund raiser,” said Bill Smith, Relay for Life Wellington event chair. “Many of the participants will be people who have been dealt with cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made in reducing cancer death rates and in the quality of life following cancer treatment.

“The funds raised will enable us to continue our investment in the fight against cancer through educational programs, research and services to patients,” said Bill Smith. “Due to the generosity of corporate sponsors like Total Wine and Spirits in Wellington , the money raised by participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs.”

Information about how to form a team or become involved in Relay For Life Wellington is available can be found through this year’s chair Bill Smith at 561-654-6644 or 1-800-ACS-2345, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or visit www.cancer.org.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
