Roses are Red, Money is Green

Be mine. Do you like me? Circle yes or no. Will you be my Valentine? These are a couple of the numerous phrases expressed on Valentine’s Day in a typical Kindergarten class. As the years go by, the fourteenth of February is more than just a day of exchanging cards and candies; it is a symbol of romance and courtship.

Despised by some and embraced by others, this day has been around for over a thousand years. It all began from the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration that used to be observed annually on February 15. Pope Gelasius turned this festival into a Christian feast day and set it back a day earlier to February 14. The feast honored Saint Valentine who was martyred along with two other priests on that day. This is the point where the factual story ends and where so many legends have incorporated their own ending to the tale.

          Couples take advantage of this day to rekindle their love and to be alone with each other rather than a day to commemorate the saint. Florists and card companies take advantage of this day for colossal profits. For teenagers, feelings toward this holiday are definitely mixed. Companies know how to target teens to buy the traditional Valentine’s package. Teens are forced to purchase gifts for their significant other in order to keep them satisfied. It is considered unacceptable if there is no exchanging of gifts in today’s culture.

More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold for Valentine’s Day each year. About 110 million roses are sold and delivered within a three-day time period. There are no such things as spontaneous gifts on Valentine’s Day, it is simply expected. Society pressures us to buy expensive jewelry and chocolates because it’s the only way companies see fit for showing affection. The way to truly say “I love you” is by being thoughtful every day, not just one chosen day out of the year. A dozen roses on a sunny day in March are much more meaningful than the when they are bought on the fourteenth of February.

Unconditional love happens all year round, 24/7, for better or worse and in sickness and in health. One day a year cannot portray the love one feels for a lifetime’s worth of sentiment.

MIAMI, FL JANUARY 18, 2010 – For the second year in a row, Miami’s own Mad Cat Theatre Company will be returning to the South Beach Comedy Festival! This time the troupe is back with a dangerous cast of characters in The Preservation Society, a world premiere comedy, written and directed by Mad Cat’s founder, Paul Tei.

 

Leave it to Mad Cat to turn a wake into a comedy. Polly Chekhov, a comedy writer in Hollywood, California comes back to Hollywood, Florida for the wake of her beloved grandmother Mary. It is left to her to write her grandmother’s eulogy; however, a peculiar set of distractions that include a bassoonist, her eccentric family, and a chorus of Deconstructionist, keep Polly from finishing. In a journey to encapsulate who her grandmother was, Polly must also wrestle with the meaning to her own life as well as what it means to be a free thinking woman in society.

 

Featuring Mad Cat Company members and some of Miami’s hot, hip and offbeat new talent with Melissa Almaguer, Sofia Citarella * and Tiffany Hanan Madera as the three sisters with Anne Tei & Pio Tei as their parents, along with Betsy Graver*, Troy Davidson* Margaret Prusner* and Ricky Waugh.

ALEXA FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES BENEFIT COMMITTEE MEETING ON JANUARY 27

PALM BEACH – The Alexa Foundation will host a committee meeting on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Nick and Johnnies Patio Bar and Grill, 207 Royal Poinciana Way, Palm Beach, to discuss plans for its upcoming benefit event.  The meeting starts at 4 p.m. and the venue will offer happy hour pricing and food starting at 5 p.m.
 
Led by Walter Ross as Chairman, along with Donald and Melania Trump and Patrick Park as Honorary Chairmen, the Alexa Foundation’s upcoming March 25 benefit event will once again feature lightning rod Bill O’Reilly as keynote speaker. The controversial talk show host and author says he is passionate about the cause, named after Alexa Branchini – whose parents founded  It Happened to Alexa in 2003 after their daughter was assaulted and raped as a freshman during only her second week at college .  The third annual Justice is Served benefit dinner will be held at the Mar-a-Lago Club, Palm Beach.
 
IHTA is the only foundation of its kind in the United States, providing direct financial assistance to rape victims’ families for travel-related expenses during the litigation process. After their daughter’s long and traumatic trial ended, the Branchinis realized that many families in similar circumstances would not have the finances to support the travel and lodging costs incurred in an out-of-town trial. They didn’t want a lack of funds to prevent any rape victim from prosecuting her (or his) attacker.
 
 “This benefit assists our Foundation’s goal of ensuring that sexual predators are taken off the streets,” said Tom Branchini.  “We are incredibly grateful for the critical funds raised, which help us to help so many other families in a desperate time of need.”
