(West Palm Beach, FL – July 29, 2014)  The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is poised to present an exciting and eclectic array of international artists and attractions from every discipline from rock to pop to classical music, from Broadway to Hollywood, from the TV screen to many of the world’s hottest nightclubs and most impressive concert stages.

“Our upcoming season will be particularly exciting,” said Judith Mitchell, Chief Executive Officer of the Kravis Center. “With such a well-rounded roster of performances, the Kravis Center once again provides something for everyone and this season reflects our commitment to offer programming that is as diverse as the community we serve.”

“The best of everything, that’s what audiences expect when they come to the Kravis Center, and that is what we will be presenting during our brightest season yet,” said Lee Bell, Senior Director of Programming at the Kravis Center. “People can expect the best of Broadway with award-winning shows like The Book of Mormon, Memphis and Pippin. The best of pop music from Judy Collins to Diana Krall, from Tony Bennett to Boz Scaggs, plus classical greats like pianist Lang Lang and the BBC Orchestra with Keith Lockhart, as well as many of the world’s funniest comedians, such as Lewis Black and Kathy Griffin.

We’re also very proud to launch a brand new three-part musical series, Michael Feinstein Conducts the Kravis Center Pops Orchestra.

In addition to performances in the 2,195-seat Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. Concert Hall, the Kravis Center will present a diverse array of drama, music and dance in the intimate 300-seat Marshall E. Rinker, Sr. Playhouse, and the flexible 300-seat Helen K. Persson Hall. Some of the Family Fare and PEAK – performances will be held in the 1400-seat outdoor Michael and Andrew Gosman Amphitheatre.

For two Dreyfoos Hall performances this coming season, the Center is offering seating that includes only the Orchestra and Grand Tier sections (Diavolo Architecture in Motion and Dave Mason’s Traffic Jam).

Last summer, the Kravis Center did an extensive overhaul to the Helen K. Persson Hall, including the addition of a new removable riser system with LED lighting and plush AccuTracker chairs. Persson Hall can now accommodate a wide variety of entertainment in an intimate setting from theater-style seating to cabaret seating, complete with dozens of well-situated drink tables for the convenience and comfort of the audience.

Don McLean and Judy Collins

Few performers have stood the test of time as well as Don McLean and Judy Collins. Don McLean has had a long and successful songwriting and performing career. In fact, “American Pie” is widely considered one of the top songs of the 20th century. A virtuoso of a variety of vocal styles, Don can – and does – inspire a range of emotions with his singing. Judy, too, began inspiring audiences with her sublime vocals, vulnerable songwriting and commitment to social activism. Five decades and 50 albums later, Judy, who began her impressive career at 13 as a piano prodigy, remains a vigorous writer and performer of songs that create hope and healing and speak to the heart. She also stays active in social causes. Don and Judy will ensure that audiences enjoy a “starry, starry night.”

Pavement

(PEAK)

Pavement, a dance event created by Kyle Abraham, pays homage to the bold, backward-jeans and high-top-fade era of ’90s hip-hop, while examining a culture plagued by discrimination, genocide, and the constant quest for a way out. Inspired by John Singleton’s ground-breaking film Boyz N The Hood (1991) and essays of W.E.B. DuBois’ The Souls of Black Folk (1903), Pavement uses movement to depict scenes of violence, love, male bonding, arrests, and physical and emotional pain. The piece is set to an amazing soundtrack that mixes Philippe Jaroussky’s operatic score, Carestini: The Story of a Castrato, with the sounds of the city.

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

Lecturer: Lee Wolf

 (Kravis Under Cover)

The Invention of Wings is based on a true story about two extraordinary women living in slaveholding Charleston, S.C. in the early to mid-19th century. Sarah and Angelina Grimke defy the boundaries and laws that rob both women and the slaves who serve them of their freedom and inalienable rights. Their courage and resilience cause them to become pariahs in both their community and far beyond, reviled by slaveholders and abolitionists alike. Kidd embellishes the tale by fictionalizing two other strong, resourceful women, Charlotte and Handful, mother and daughter who are slaves in the Grimke household. Their rebellion against the forces that brutalize and enslave them will enflame and move you. This novel of love, hate, friendship, alienation, inhumanity and heroism is truly inspirational.

You’ve Got A Friend:

Carole King, Neil Sedaka and The Music Of The Brill Building

From the Brill Building, in Times Square, came the sound of America in the 1950s and ’60s. The songs – written by Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Neil Diamond and others – changed popular music and became, in many cases, iconic. “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” “Where The Boys Are” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” all came from the “music factory.” Even decades later, those writers continued to top the charts. Now, vocalist Scott Coulter tells you the music – and the stories – of the singers and songs that defined a generation.

The article won the writer a Pulitzer Prize and the story caused an international firestorm of discussion. That conversation continues thanks in part to the publication of the illustrated children’s book The Man with the Violin. and The Four Tops

The Temptations enjoyed their first major success with 1964’s “The Way You Do The Things You Do.” During the late 1960s and early ’70s, their style and songs changed to reflect the social and political upheaval; among them, “Cloud Nine.” Today, the group is as relevant as ever, and Otis Williams, one of the five original members, still performs. In 1964 The Four Tops experienced their first Motown hit with “Baby I Need Your Loving.” Their songs, soulful and bittersweet, were across-the-board successes including, “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” one of Motown’s longest-running chart toppers. The Four Tops were inducted in 1990 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
