Highlights the Art of Going Green
Exhibition August 29-October 18

(Lake Worth/July 31, 2014):  There is much more to going green than putting water bottles or newspapers in a recycling bin. There is also great potential for creating beauty with the things we have discarded. That is one reason the Cultural Council has reached out to artists all over Palm Beach County to create with re-used objects in its two part exhibition “Re-purposed/Re-seen,” August 29 to October 18.

Artists in the exhibition are using traditional techniques such as collage, painting and assemblage with out-of-the-ordinary materials such as used pallets, coat hangers and clock parts. “We want to turn the idea of recycling on its head, and dispel any pre-conceived ideas of what it means to re-purpose objects into art.” says Cultural Council Manager of Artist Services, Nichole M. Hickey.

“In continuing with the Cultural Council’s ongoing efforts to promote local artists, we chose participants who regularly re-purpose in their art,” says Cultural Council President and CEO, Rena Blades. “Art can and should be accessible to everyone, which is why we hope exhibitions like ‘Re-purposed/Re-seen’ will attract not only the people who are already familiar with the kind of work the Council shows, but also those who have not previously been exposed to the diverse art and artists in Palm Beach County.”

Artists included in this exhibition are Dennis Aufiery, Inna Babaeva, Steve Blackwood, Nicole Galluccio, Bertrand Jubert, Sandra Kuba, Deborah Meisel and Rose Shaw.

The exhibition also has an unusual second component – a collaboration between the Cultural Council and the non-profit organization Resource Depot, which supports local educators and their students through creatively re-using materials. The Council is showing the top works produced and juried after a community-wide call to create art with discarded VHS cassette tapes available at Resource Depot.

Admission to the exhibition preview party on Thursday, August 28 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. is free to Cultural Council members, $10 for non-members and includes admission to the artist trunk show featuring Urban Junk and Marta Cruz. To RSVP, call 561-472-3341 or email Debbie Calabria at [email protected]. The “Re-purposed/Re-seen” exhibition is free and open to the public from Friday, August 29 through Saturday, October 18.

Note to Editors:  Interviews with featured artists, as well as photo opportunities may be arranged in advance of, or during, the exhibition. High resolution images of the “Re-purposed/Re-seen” artists and their creations are available for downloading at Re-purposed/Re-seen Exhibition.
