The Art of Kokedama (Workshops)

Kokedama is the Japanese art of growing plants in a moss-covered ball of soil. It is wrapped with string and contains an ornamental plant growing inside. These beautiful and decorative plants, brings an organic and natural touch to planting orchids, succulents, and other ornamental plants. Learn the mechanics of how to make kokedama, creating two regular size and one small one to decorate your home or to give away to a special person.

Sado: Tea Ceremony (Beginners) (Class)

Expand upon your knowledge of Japanese tea ceremony in this hands-on class. Perform a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, with its ever-evolving seasonal subtleties, in the authentic Seishin-an Tea House under the guidance of instructor Yoshiko Hardick. The tea ceremony changes from month to month and from season to season.

Koto (Workshop)

Koto is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument first introduced to Japan from China in the 7th-8th centuries. Learn the fascinating history of this exquisite instrument and how to play it in this one-day introductory workshop. Instruments will be provided for participants to use in the workshop. Tea Ceremony (Workshop)
Time: 10:30am – 12:30pm
Cost: $50. Advance Registration Required
The workshop teaches the basics of sadō–The Way of Tea-necessary to understand the aesthetics of sadō and to fully enjoy the tea ceremony itself. Participants become familiar with how to be a guest, how to make a bowl of tea, and serve it.

Sunset Stroll
Time: 5:30pm – 7:30pm
Cost: $5 for members, and $8 for the general public
Enjoy a sunset stroll through the Roji-en: Garden of the Drops of Dew, or visit the Yamato-kan, the Morikami’s original museum, during the museum’s private, after-hours event. The Cornell Café will be serving sake and hors d’oeuvres for purchase, and the Museum Store will be open to browse. There will also be live taiko drumming performances by Fushu Daiko at 5:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the museum’s lakefront terrace. Tickets must be purchased online in advance and will not be available at the door. Space is limited.

The Basics of Indigo Katazome (2-day Workshop)
Time: 10am – 3pm
Location: Oki Education Center
Cost: $50 (cash payable to the instructor)
Katazome is a Japanese resist process used for hundreds of years in Japanese textiles. Traditional artisans created a resist paste made from a rice flour mixture and applied it to cloth through the use of elaborately hand-carved stencils. Students will learn the basics, as well as the preparation and application of the paste onto fabric, fabric dyeing, and non-traditional methods that one can use at home. Participants are requested to bring rubber gloves, along with an apron or wear old clothes.
