The Consultation
By Victor Bracero
Hair artists sculpt and paint. We use scissors, combs, brushes, razors and color. We combine art and science when trying to create the perfect look for you. The shape of you face, your contours the porosity of your hair and the undertones. Your cowlicks (grrr) and your lifestyle all have to come together to create a vision that will enhance and accentuate that natural beauty that you already possess. At least that is what you hope for when you sit in a stylist’s chair.
I have learned through the years that communication is the key component during this process. Consultations are just as important as anything else that your stylist can do for you. It’s a way to establish trust between the Stylist and the client. If your stylist does not conduct a thorough consultation with you at your first meeting, my advice is to find another.
The purpose of the consultation from a stylist’s standpoint is to get the client to really think about what works or doesn’t work for them. The stylist will ask some specific questions in order to get a feel for your lifestyle and beauty regimen. It’s a way to ensure that the end result will align with the client’s needs and expectations. Can they maintain that look on a daily basis or will work schedules and the kids make it impossible? Does the client understand the level of upkeep financially and time wise that it will take to maintain that color or style? What is the overall condition of their hair? Are they ok with multiple sessions to achieve the desired look or do they have a wedding to attend next week?
The client in turn is trying to make sure that the stylist is listening and understanding their needs and hair goals. It also gives the client a chance to see if they like the vibe in the salon as well as if they feel comfortable with the stylist. Do your research! Chances are that the stylist has Facebook and Instagram pages that you can peruse. Don’t be afraid to show the stylist pics of what you are trying to achieve; it is just another tool that can be used to reach your desired look.
A true professional will give honest feedback. If you are suggesting something that is just not possible like, “I want to look just like Jlo” or something that will compromise the integrity of your hair, chances are your stylist will suggest other options. It is the stylists job to educate their clients and you will thank them for it in the long run.
The consultation also gives the stylist and client the chance to discuss the expected length of the process as well as what the investment will be. If you are both in agreement, be sure to find out what the cancellation policy is and then make your appointment!
