COMMUNITY THEATRE BUILT TO LAST
JOINT RELEASE:

LAKE WORTH PLAYHOUSE AND DELRAY BEACH PLAYHOUSE

In an age where theatres ebb and flow with the changing economy, community theatre has stood the test of time in Palm BeachCounty. The two oldest theatres in Palm BeachCounty are both community theatres, showing the dedication of the South Florida community to supporting local arts as both celebrate the close of highly successful anniversary seasons.

ABOUT LAKE WORTH PLAYHOUSE (60 Years of Theatre Excellence) – On December 1, 1953, the Lake Worth Playhouse was incorporated by a group of Lake Worth citizens looking to bring theatre to the heart of Palm Beach County. In October 1975, the Lake Worth Playhouse purchased the Oakley Theatre, the oldest building on the register of the Art Deco Society of Palm Beach County. Today, the Playhouse is proud to offer a variety of mainstream and alternative programming, both live and on film. The Playhouse also offers educational programs for adults and children, and community outreach initiatives that bring cultural programs into the neighborhoods of underserved youth, and also make theatre available free of charge for disadvantaged citizens in the community. Year-round programming includes award-winning dramas, comedies, musicals, area premieres, Broadway favorites, children’s shows, international ballets and operas in cinema, live concert series and alternative programming. Lake Worth Playhouse has become an artistic milestone. We are proud to be called the home of talented artists and performers, dedicated volunteers and a loyal and ever-growing population of patrons and donors.

ABOUT DELRAY BEACH PLAYHOUSE (66 Years of Theatre Excellence) – The idea of The Delray Beach Playhouse began in 1942, when a group of citizens met in Delray Beach with the idea that the community would support local theatre. In its first year, The Delray Beach Playhouse presented five plays. When the County Commission made land available on Lake Ida, the group held a drive to raise enough funds to build their own building. Robert Blake, a local architect and one of the original members designed the structure which was ready for the 1957-58 Season. Today stands what is considered one of the top-rated community theatres in the country: a 238 seat auditorium, expansive his and her dressing rooms with bathrooms and showers, a full complement of technical and administrative spaces, a prop loft, a 4,000 square foot children’s theatre and the Warrington Room, a “black box” rehearsal studio. The Delray Beach Playhouse is stronger and more exciting than ever, boasting thousands of members, hundreds of actors and volunteers bringing live theatre for all ages.
