Mori Stories: The Old Man Who Made the Trees Bloom

Enjoy the Japanese folktale of a kind old man, his loyal dog, and how good always triumphs over evil.

Ikebana Flower Arrangement: Sogetsu School (Class)

Time: 1:30pm – 3:30pm

Cost: $80 (Morikami Members $70). Advance Registration Required.
Flower arranging, ikebana, is a traditional Japanese art form spanning centuries. Ikebana has various different schools of study, each with unique philosophies and aesthetics. The Sogetsu School is a contemporary school which focuses on the creativity and individuality of ikebana. The idea is that ikebana can be done by anyone, anywhere, with almost anything. Students will learn the basics of Sogetsu and create pieces each week to take home and enjoy.

Sumi-e Ink Painting (Floral style for Beginners) (Class)
Time: 10:30am – 12:30pm

Cost: $60 (Morikami Members $55). Advance Registration Required.

Sumi-e is a form of Japanese ink painting brought from China in the 12th century. Primarily done in black ink, the name literally means “charcoal drawing” in Japanese. Students grind their own ink using an ink stick and a grinding stone and learn to hold and utilize brushes to create the primary sumi-e brushstrokes. Floral and landscape classes will start with a review of the basic techniques before moving on to the main subject.

Hatsume Fair: A One-of-a-Kind Celebration of Spring

Time: 10am – 5pm Price: Adults $20 (ages 11+); Children $10 (ages 4-10); FREE for museum members and ages 3 and under.

The 41st annual Hatsume Fair promises to be a spectacular event for the entire family! Celebrating the first bud of spring, Hatsume, the Morikami’s largest annual event, transforms Morikami Park into a unique Japanese spring festival. The event features multiple stages of continuous entertainment where guests can experience taiko drumming performances, martial art and bonsai demonstrations, a costume contest, fashion show, and much more! Avenues of artisan booths, anime dealers, plant sales, food vendors,  Japanese Beer Garden, Sake Station, children’s activities, and a bonsai exploration area are sure to delight festival-goers.

*Intermediate courses are for students with prior experience or have taken at least three sessions of Ikebana classes.

Flower arranging, ikebana, is a traditional Japanese art form spanning centuries. Ikebana has various different schools of study, each with unique philosophies and aesthetics. Dating back to the 15th century, the Ikenobo School is the oldest and most traditional. Students in this course learn the basic principles and style of Ikenobo, creating fresh flower arrangements each week to take home and enjoy.

Japanese Language Intensive III (Workshop)
Time: 12pm – 4pm

Cost: $100 (Two-Day Workshop). Advance Registration Required.

This intensive 2-day workshop covers Units 4 and 5 of the required textbook and completes hiragana reading and writing. It concludes the Nihongo Level I series. The prerequisite for this course is Nihongo Intensive Workshop II or the Nihongo Level I Part 2 Class. Students who have completed this workshop may go on to the Nihongo Level II class in Part 1 of the following season.

Koto (Demonstration)

Time: 12pm, 1:30pm or 3pm

Cost: $5 with paid admission to the museum.

Koto is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument first introduced to Japan from China in the 7th-8th centuries. Learn the fascinating history of this exquisite instrument and listen to its captivating and tranquil sounds demonstrated by koto teacher Mrs. Yoshiko Carlton. Be introduced to the basics of how this instrument is played and receive a koto music sheet of the most famous Japanese song Sakura, “Cherry Blossom.” Reservations are required for groups of ten or more. Sado: The Way of Tea (Demonstration)

Observe Japanese sadō, an ever-changing demonstration rich in seasonal subtleties. Your involvement in the true spirit of sadō — harmony (wa), reverence (kei), purity (sei), tranquility (jaku) — along with a sip of matcha green tea and a sweet will help you bring a calm perspective into your busy life. Reservations are required for groups of ten or more. For more information, call 561-233-1367.

Expand upon your knowledge of Japanese tea ceremony in this hands-on class. Perform traditional Japanese tea ceremony, with its ever-evolving seasonal subtleties, in the authentic Seishin-an Tea House under the guidance of instructor Yoshiko Hardick. The tea ceremony changes from month to month and from season to season. Intermediate course requires approval by the instructor before registering.

 

Sunday, April 19

Basics of Sushi (Workshop)

Time: 10am – 12pm

Cost: $70. Advance Registration Required.

Sushi has entered the American palate as a cultural influence from Japan.  But do you know what sushi is? Few know that sushi is not actually raw fish, but rice made with a bit of vinegar and sugar. Served with a variety of accompaniments, cooked or raw fish and vegetables, it can take many forms.  Participants in this hands-on workshop, led by Mitsutoshi Sekita, sushi chef from a Japanese restaurant in Plantation, Florida, will learn cultural information about sushi, how to make sushi, and, of course, enjoy eating sushi.
