December, 2013 – Seeing the Holidays through the Eyes of a Child

Happy December, 2013!  See the Holidays through the Eyes of a Child.

Here’s what I love about the holidays – looking through the eyes of my children at all of the magical things that start to happen.  We had an “Elf on the Shelf” visit our house last year for the first time, and this year the kids were wishing for the Elf to re-appear even before Thanksgiving.  Their wish came true a few days ago, and it’s been fun to see them talking with the elf. They tell him their Christmas wish list, as they remember things that they would like (or, unfortunately, see aKJSP-DSC_0006 commercial for some toy they just cannot live without).  They also confide in him when they have done something wrong. They figure – he flies home to the North Pole to tell Santa everything anyway, so they might as well come clean and explain themselves.  Their anticipation of Christmas is what it’s all about and counting down the days until the 25th with them is very exciting!

Here’s what I don’t love about the holidays – feeling rushed, accidentally adding to many things to the calendar and having the feeling that things will not get done on time for the holidays.  I’m not really sure what to do about that feeling, except to tell myself to lean toward looking through the eyes of the children (instead of through my adult eyes) at each element of the holidays.  And it will all work out better!  How do you avoid holiday stress and find ways to truly enjoy the holidays?

I want to thank all of our wonderful writers, photographers, advertisers and readers!  This month we have a restaurant review (see Florida Foodie) of one of my favorite new places to go – the Bull McCabe’s Irish Pub and Tap Room. It’s located in the original Wellington Mall, and its Irish fare is very authentic, thanks to the meticulous owner Alan Craig who hails from Ireland himself.  And if you sample anything (like steak, sea scallops or salmon) cooked on the 800-degree volcanic Celtic rock at your table, you will be in for a scrumptious, one-of-a-kind experience.  See more about the talented Celtic band “Fire in the Kitchen” in Cultural Corner this month too.

I had the privilege of interviewing a terrific orthodontist who’s new to the Wellington area, Dr. Brad Santelli, for our “AW Spotlight” story.  Santelli Orthodontics offers state-of-the art technology, which really speeds up the amount of time someone needs to wear braces, for example, and makes the whole process easier these days.  Dr. Santelli and his staff are caring people with excellent reviews from their past patients. If it’s about time for you to look into braces, don’t forget about our “AW Coupons” page for a $500 OFF braces coupon.

This month I want to congratulate my mentor in the magazine business Jon Frangipane for his beautiful Lighthouse Point Magazine, which he was the editor/publisher of for over ten years. Like many of us “writer types,” Jon is a creative person – he’s an accomplished pianist, composer, playwright and tennis player. He’s ready to get back to doing all of the things he loves, after selling his publication. And even though he totally lied to me about how “easy” having a magazine would be, I love him dearly and the readers of Lighthouse Point Magazine will miss him greatly.

We have two terrific contests this month!  The first, running Dec. 1 – 10, is for the always-wonderful prize of a gift certificate to Massage Envy in Wellington (located in the Whole Foods plaza).  The second contest will run in mid-December, and the prize is a party for up to 10 people at Picasso’s Paint-Your-Own Pottery in Lake Worth.  See our “Contest” page for details.

THANKS to all of you for reading!  I hope you had a Happy Hanukkah and Happy Thanksgiving!  And I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!  Wishing you peace and joy,

Krista Martinelli
