Miami Time: A Short Play Festival at the WRM/PAX Theatre Series

Feb. 15 & 16

White Rose Miami returns to PAX with ‘Miami Time’, a short play festival that celebrates the city we call home.  After receiving dozens of submissions, a panel of local artists chose 13 short plays by 11 local playwrights.  “Our goal when creating this event was to find diverse voices that together could capture the essence of what makes Miami such a unique city,” explains Co-Creative Director Ivan Lopez.  “We were very pleased with the quality of the plays and are extremely excited about the lineup we put together.  There really is something for everyone,” he said. “Playwrights were asked to submit 2-10 minute scripts that captured the themes of “Miami” and “time” – from there, their imaginations went wild.  The result is a group of plays that cross culture, generation, and time.” Co-Creative Director Melissa Almaguer adds, “This is our second event working with a large group of artists and it’s exciting to be able to trust in everyone’s creativity. Ultimately the evening for me is about highlighting that part of Miami that isn’t so commonly depicted, and that’s that feeling of community and togetherness. Regardless of what points of views are seen on stage, off stage we want the audience to feel connected. That’s my Miami experience and that’s what I love about our city.”

Don Grimme’s “The Gateway” takes us on a lightning quick tour of 500 years of Miami history.  In Don Sheer’s “Saving the Brisket” an elderly Jewish woman tries desperately to save her brisket after her power gets knocked out during a hurricane.  In “Dominoes” Paul Poppe imagines a future Miami where cultural diversity has been eliminated.  In “PAX, 1961” WRM’s Lopez tells the true story of his father’s first day in Miami and the strange coincidence that surfaced over 50 years later.  Marj O’Neill Butler tackles the foreclosure crisis that crippled the city in “Leaving Home” as a young married couple spends their last few moments together in the home they just lost.  Renier Murrillo’s “MIA Westchester” pokes friendly fun at the infamous ‘Miami girls’. Marla E. Schwartz’s play “Brunch Soon” is a comedy about a couple fighting over where to have brunch at one of the myriad of awesome restaurants in Miami. Other playwrights include Kaley Rose, Izzy Garcia, Gian S., and Barbara Levis.
