June, 2012 – The Beginning of a Beautiful Summer!

Happy Father’s Day to all of the Dads Around Wellington!  Kids – don’t forget Father’s Day on Sunday, June 17th.

As a family, we are always on a quest for fun things to do in the

summer, while keeping cool enough.  One of the nicest places to spend a day around here, in my opinion, is at the Palm Beach Zoo.  We recently had a nice Saturday at the Palm Beach Zoo, and it’s just so fun to stroll around under the shady trees while your kids happily point out each animal they see.  In our “AW Spotlight” interview with Gail Eaton of the Palm Beach Zoo, she says, “Another wonderful thing about the Palm Beach Zoo is that it’s a very cool zoo, literally!  There is so much vegetation – 23 acres of lush foliage with shade and canopies everywhere.  So, the Palm Beach Zoo is cooled by the vegetation and by our wonderful interactive fountain where children can splash and play.

I’ve also already had some nice feedback on Shawn Thompson’s list of “Kids Get Freebies & Cheapies” list for the summer (scroll down to find it under “Kids Corner”), which we posted a few days early.  If you are looking for fun, affordable things to do with your kids, don’t miss out on these opportunities like “KidsBowlFree.com” and the summer kids’ movies series.

I supplemented Shawn’s list by giving some of my own summer fun ideas in “Mommy Moments” while highlighting some of our kid-oriented advertisers – like The Good Earth Farm, Joey’s Outback Adventures, My Gym, Playmobil FunPark, Picasso’s Paint-Your-Own Pottery and the Palm Beach Zoo.

One of my friends decided to start a group for exchanging these types of summer ideas on Facebook.  It’s called something like “Hot Mamas of the Palm Beaches” and it’s a great idea – to have an online forum with your friends like this.

Yesterday we had a great time seeing “The Avengers,” which will probably be deemed on of this summer’s hottest movies.  While over at the Movies at Wellington, we went over to Kontiki Restaurant afterwards for a wonderful bite to eat.  I agree with our restaurant reviewer, who says, “It was love at first bite. I couldn’t stay away. I had to return and try more offerings on their vast and intriguing menu.” Check out “The Florida Foodie” for her full review of Kontiki this month.

As an editor and an avid reader, I’ve read a lot of articles about the many benefits of walking.  But never before have a read such a case for walking as Alan Williamson makes in “The Walk Talk.”  Hilarious!  Check out “As I Was Saying.”

Are you wondering if you have a gifted child in your family?  In this month’s “Ask Dr. Z,” Dr. Laura Zipris gives a little explanation about the criteria for gifted children and the gifted program.  She knows what she’s talking about, and she’s licensed to test children for gifted too.

In “Cantankerously Yours,” we delve deeper into Wendell Abern’s frustration.  He has discovered, “The more attractive the woman, the more buffoonish I behave.” Thanks for making me laugh every month, Wendell.

Hey Dog Lovers!  In “Dog Walkin’ Wellington,” Barbara Phillippi talks to a few owners of multiple dogs Around Wellington.  Just walk outside and you will find plenty of these folks!  So she explores the intriguing question of “why is one dog not enough?”

I think we have been very lucky here at AroundWellington.com to

Jessica Small, our Teen Talk writer and intern
Jessica Small, our Teen Talk writer and intern

have wonderful, well-rounded teens writing our “Teen Talk” column and also serving as an intern for our online magazine.  Just read Jessica Small’s “A Year in Review and a Look at What Lies Ahead” in this month’s “Teen Talk” and you’ll see what I mean.  Jessica is truly talented – as Wellington High’s school president of thinkPinkkids, a reporter for the school newspaper the Wellington Wave and a member of the dance team.  And I have a feeling this is just the tip of the iceberg of her extracurricular activities.  Meanwhile, I’d like to wish our former “Teen Talk” writer and intern Stephanie Courtois all the best as she heads to college this summer.  She will go far!

The AW Contests continue on our website and also on our AroundWellington.com Facebook page.  Check our “Contest” page for our current contest!  THANKS to Massage Envy for providing the monthly prize of a one-hour gift certificate!  Thanks again to D. Gatekeeper who provided two sets of tickets for 4 to B.B. King’s for contest prizes last month!

As usual, I’ve rambled on and only covered about half of the articles for this month. For the full menu of our stories, photos and videos, just visit our home page – www.AroundWellington.com!

Best Regards and Happy June!
