March Mayor’s Column

March means Spring is just around the corner. Days are getting longer which also means we will have more time outdoors. This month, please take full advantage of all our Great Hometown has to offer.

This month, Wellington is once again taking part in the annual “Let’s Move: Commit to Change Physical Activity Challenge.” This county-wide campaign initiative, presented by the Palm Health Foundation, focuses on physical activity, nutrition, and health, and invites residents to commit to exercising at least 30 minutes a day.

Wellington has created its own team in hopes of once again taking the leading spot in this friendly competition. We need your help to show Palm Beach County that our Great Hometown is an Active Hometown. Register for the challenge by visiting LetsMovePBC.org, and selecting “Village of Wellington” as your team. Participation is FREE and open to all.

Come celebrate “Marchtoberfest” in Wellington with a traditional pop-up German Biergarten featuring Hofbräu Bier. Marchtoberfest takes place Friday, March 6th and Saturday, March 7th.  Admission is FREE. Each day will feature a lounge area of authentic Biergarten tables and benches, along with German food, music, and special entertainment on select days. Kids will enjoy their very own activity zone, featuring an inflatable bounce house, obstacle course, sports challenge, slides, and lawn games. For more event details, visit Wellingtonfl.gov.

Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday, March 8th; don’t forget to “spring forward” and set your clocks one hour ahead.  This is also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. It is a simple safety practice that may save a life.

St. Patrick’s Day is on Tuesday, March 17.  Please have fun while being responsible.  Don’t forget to wear green!

Bacon & Bourbon Fest is back this month. The event takes place March 21st– 22nd and features great live music, artists and crafters, an eclectic menu of bacon-infused culinary delights, and a collection of over 40 bourbons and whiskeys for your tasting pleasure. The Fest also offers participants exclusive bacon and bourbon pairing seminars including exclusive tastings. South Florida’s foremost Bourbon experts share the distiller’s art and patient techniques in the seminars and tastings. Attendees will also enjoy fun and activities with backyard lawn games such as corn hole, giant Jenga, checkers, and more! For more information, visit the event organizer’s website at baconbourbonfest.com.

Don’t miss this year’s PBSO A Day for Autism event on Saturday, March 28th. This FREE and fun annual event is helping to build bridges between local law enforcement and the community. We invite you to join Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) team, and our Mounted and K-9 PBSO Units for an afternoon of music, fun, games, and community resources.

Spring Break for our local schools runs from March 23 through the 27 and we all know how much our kids look forward to that.  Fortunately, Wellington has a wide variety of outdoor activities this month for everyone to enjoy. The Village offers several camps during Spring Break, visit Wellington’s website for a full list of classes and programs.

As the saying goes “spring is a time of new beginnings.” This year, that saying holds true for us here at Village Council.  We are looking toward the future and are excited to work with you to ensure that Wellington remains a Great Hometown.
