PALM BEACH POETRY FESTIVAL

To Host Poetry Writing Workshop

POETIC POSSIBILITIES

Delray Beach Center for the Arts – May 11

The award-winning Palm Beach Poetry Festival will be hosting POETIC POSSIBILITIES, a poetry-writing workshop on Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m.  The informative workshop will be held at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts at 51 N. Swinton Avenue.

A $10 fee will be collected at the workshop, which will be led by Jill Bergkamp, who received both the Rona Jaffe Poetry Scholarship for the Breadloaf Writer’s Conference and the Relief’ first Editor’s Choice Award. Her poems have most recently appeared in The Southeast Review, Third Coast and Gargoyle.

In this workshop participants will read poems, and practice methods to explore poetic possibilities through the use of detail and imagination. Through the reading of poetry, and use of generative exercises, this workshop will explore “ways to work to go beyond what is already known in hopes of hijacking the unconscious gifts of what is not known,” according to Blaise Allen, Ph.D., the Poetry Festival’s Director of Community Outreach.

About the Palm Beach Poetry Festival 2014:

The 10th annual Palm Beach Poetry Festival will be held January 20-25, 2014 at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts. The Festival will once again feature about a dozen top poets at numerous ticketed public events, including readings, talks and a lively panel discussion.  In addition, workshop participants will read at several late-night open mics, free to the public. Tickets will go on sale to the public later this year through the festival website and at the Crest Theatre Box Office at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts.

The Palm Beach Poetry Festival is generously sponsored by Morgan Stanley, the Windler Group of Morgan Stanley’s Atlanta Office; the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach County Tourism Development Council and the Board of County Commissioners of Palm Beach County; The Palm Beach Post; WPBI-FM Classical South Florida; and Murder on the Beach, Delray Beach’s independent bookseller.

Last year, the Palm Beach Poetry Festival received the prestigious Muse Award for Outstanding Arts & Cultural Organization (budget under $500,000) from the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County. In 2010, the Festival received an Arts Challenge Grant from The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
