(West Palm Beach, FL – June 24, 2021) Friends of the Mounts Botanical Garden will be hosting 20 outstanding open-air events in July for people of all ages, including art classes, Orchid Trilogy, Dogs’  Day in the Garden, and the comprehensive Windows Into Wellness Series (Meditation, Qi Gong, Reiki, Walks, and Yoga).

“Palm Beach County’s oldest and largest botanical garden is inviting garden enthusiasts, plant lovers, and proud ‘green-thumbers’ of all ages to come out and enjoy some of our many safe, healthy and happy horticultural activities in July, including our always popular Orchid Trilogy,” says Mounts Curator-Director Rochelle Wolberg.

Orchid Basics

Saturday, 10 am to 1 pm

Newcomers to orchids will learn how to choose the correct plants for their growing area and what orchids need to grow and flower. Sign up and start your orchid journey here.

Orchid Repotting and Orchid Mounting Techniques

Saturday, 10 am to 1 pm

Learn how to repot an orchid, how often should it be repotted, the different potting media to use, and the proper pot or basket to use. Also learn how orchids can be mounted on items such as cork, a tree fern or a branch.

July 17

Training Your eye – Orchid Pests

Saturday, 10 am to 1 pm

Learn about pests and diseases that can affect orchids. Bacteria, fungus and insects can all damage your orchids; learn how to spot them early and what to do if you find them. Students will learn how to identify the culprits, what products to use to get rid of them, and how to avoid them in the future. Orchids and Orchid leaves can be brought in for diagnosis, but must be placed inside a sealed plastic bag to prevent contamination of other plants.

Summer Sketchbook Journal Classes for Adults

Tuesdays, 9 am to 10:30 am

The Summer Nature & Art Classes at Mounts are perfect for sharing a love for art with fellow sketchers or painters. Join us for a Nature Walk with artist Marilyn Walter to collect photos from the gardens before moving indoors, where she will share how journals and sketchbooks are exciting tools for exploring nature. Ms. Walter will guide participants through the drawing process, showing how drawing explorations can be recorded and translated into a sketchbook journal.  Attendees should bring a sketchpad and favorite camera device (i.e., cell phone, camera, or tablet).

Summer Watercolor Journal Classes for Adults

Tuesdays, 10:45 am to Noon

Participants will explore and be inspired by the beautiful garden areas at Mounts. Following a Nature Walk with artist Marilyn Walter to collect photos from our gardens before moving indoors, she will guide attendees through the watercolor journal process. Please bring watercolor pads, journals, and favorite photographic device (i.e., cell phone camera or tablet).

Art Classes Notes:

$15 for members; $18 for nonmembers

Registration is required; class size is limited to 15.

Presented by Marilyn Walter, an active member of the South Florida Arts Community.  She has taught drawing, painting, and mixed media. Her own figurative and landscape works have been in numerous shows in Florida, Texas, New Jersey and New York.

Windows Into Wellness Series

July 7 & 14

Guided Sunflower Power Walks

Wednesdays, 8:30 am to 9:30 am

$5 for members; $15 for nonmembers

(Registration is required; tour size is limited; includes full Garden admission)

Reconnect and recharge with nature. Experience the beauty and plant life of the Windows on the Floating World Tropical Wetland along with other garden areas and watch the newly planted Sunflower Field as it grows each week. Walk for fitness and fun.

Qi Gong

Wednesdays, 10 am to 11 am

$10 per class for members; $25 per class for nonmembers (includes full Garden admission)

Registration is required; class size is limited to 15

Relieve stress and increase your metabolism, flexibility and strength.  Qi Gong (pronounced chee-gong) is an ancient Chinese exercise and healing technique. The exercises include simple, slow movements (which mimic nature), meditation and focused breathing — similar to Tai Chi. Each class will begin with a gentle walk to the Exhibit Hall, where participants will continue with the exercises. Stress Break – Meditation and Breath Work Class

This class will offer a unique expression of therapeutic yoga focusing on the present moment, breath awareness and meditation. No experience necessary, just come with an open and curious mind.  Class is open to adults at all levels and will be led by Jacqueline Burbage.

Vinyasa Yoga Flow

Fridays, 9 am to 10 am

Saturday, 9 am to 10 am

$10 per class for members; $15 per class for nonmembers

(Registration is required; group size is limited to 20; includes full Garden admission. Please bring water and Yoga mat or towel.)

This Vinyasa yoga flow class will stimulate your senses by bringing awareness to all of them through movement. Meet at the front gate just before 9; instructor will walk the group through the Garden to the Exhibit Hall. This 1-hour class is for adults at all levels as modifications will be offered. Vinyasa is a physical practice that also awakens the mental and spiritual beings that we all are. Class will be led by Jess Pfeffer.

Reiki Healing Sound Bowls Meditation Class

Saturday, 9 am to 10 am

$10 for members; $15 for nonmembers

(Registration is required; group size is limited to 20; includes full Garden admission. Please bring water and Yoga mat or towel.)

Reiki is a powerful healing modality that helps to release energetic blockages, tension, stress, so people can connect with their higher self. The full moon helps us to surrender so we can return to our wholeness. During this event participants will be guided with full moon meditation, Reiki and sound healing. Class will meet at the front entrance and begin with a healing Garden walk to the Exhibit Hall, where we will end with intuitive insight for the collective to help attendees harness the energy of this full moon, and they will leave feeling harmonized and refreshed. Class is open to adults and will be led by Jessica Prestia.

Special Days in the Garden

July 11

Dogs’ Day in the Garden

Sunday, 9 am to 3 pm (last entry at 2 pm)

FREE for members; $10 for nonmembers; $5 for children 5-12

This dog-and-family-friendly monthly event is held throughout the Garden. Bring your beloved pooch to enjoy a relaxed garden stroll. There are many great spots to capture family photos for posting online with #mountsbotanicalgarden.

Guidelines:

+ Non-retractable leashes only; retractable leashes are not permitted.

+ No more than one dog per adult will be admitted.

+ Rabies vaccination must be current.

+ Visitors should bring their own and water treats for the puppies.

Palm Beach County Residents Day

Thursday, 9 am to 3 pm (last entry at 2 pm)

Free admission all day long for anyone who lives in Palm Beach County with valid proof of residency.

Last Chance to View Stickwork Exhibition

The awesome and ecology-conscious exhibition Cutting Corners: A Stickwork Exhibition, a massive, willow sculpture located in the Great Lawn area, is coming down at the end of July. Take advantage of this last opportunity to view this incredible ecological exhibition.
