Series of Jan McArt’s New Play Readings 

Series Runs from November until April inside the

Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center 

BOCA RATON, Fla., August 8, 2014 – Lynn University and Producer Jan McArt, director of theatre arts program development, are announcing the upcoming series of Jan McArt’s New Play Readings. Under the leadership and guidance of McArt, this program develops new plays by highly acclaimed playwrights through staged readings.

November 3

East Hampton, Last Summer

  • 7:30 p.m.
  • Starring Jan McArt
  • Directed by Wayne Rudisill.

A retired opera star and her playwright companion spend the summer of 1960 in the Long Island resort town of East Hampton, where they soon find themselves competing with the local upper-middle classes in an atmosphere of extreme snobbery.

Note: Tony Finstrom is an award-winning playwright whose works have been included in Jan McArt’s New Play Reading Series for the past three years. He regularly contributes to Naked Stage’s 24-Hour Theatre Project and to Shorts Gone Wild produced by City Theatre and Island City Stage. He is chairman and co-founder of South Florida’s Silver Palm Theater Awards and is a South Florida Carbonell Theatre award judge.

Daniel’s Husband

A contemporary gay couple faces and accepts its limitations as defined by society.

Note: Several plays by Michael McKeever have been produced at Florida Stage and the Caldwell Theatre Company. He is the recipient of five Carbonell Awards, two Silver Palm Awards and three Florida Individual Artist Fellowships. He also is an award-winning actor and designer, and a founding member of Miami’s Zoetic Stage theatre company.

Our Time

Three women in their 50s decide they have to make changes in their lives to become “unstuck.” So they spend a weekend in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where each has an experience that teaches her how to make the transformation.

Note: Dan Clancy’s The Timekeepers (2014 Best Play Carbonell Award, Island City Stage) has played in New York and 14 countries. His other plays include Volunteer Man (Obie Award), Two Sisters (Joseph Kesslering Playwriting Award), The First Time, 108 Waverly, The Perfect Day, and Proposition 8, read at Lynn University in 2013 and produced in Palm Springs in 2014 as the retitled Poster Boys.

Original musicals by Lynn Portas written with Mr. Clancy include 108 Waverly, The First Time and two children’s musicals: Penelope the Tooth Fairy and A Boy and His Dog. She has written/performed several children’s albums and is teaching at St. Joseph’s College in New York. She also is a member of the nationally acclaimed BMI Lehman Engle Musical Theatre Workshop and the ASCAP Musical Theater Workshop.

This is the story of a mirror that comes to life because she yearns to be seen.

Note:  Michael Leeds wrote and directed Broadway’s Swinging On a Star (Tony nomination, Best Musical). His regional and international credits are extensive, and include off-Broadway work Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah – Songs of Allan Sherman (Drama Desk nomination, Best Director/Best Choreographer). He is currently Island City Stage’s associate artistic director, where he won the 2014 Carbonell Award as Best Director for the production of Dan Clancy’s The Timekeepers.
