Norton celebrates Veterans Day with a salute to WWII Veterans

Free admission to all veterans during Art After Dark on Nov. 8

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (Oct. 24, 2012) – The Norton Museum of Art is celebrating Veteran’s Day early with a tribute to WWII veterans at Art After Dark on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012. Highlights of the celebration include screenings of the new WWII documentary Shot Up & Shot Down, focusing on the harrowing war experiences of three B-17 crewmen (who eventually retired to Palm Beach County), and the special exhibition Keep Calm and Carry On: WWII and the British Home Front, 1938-1951, which examines how Britain’s creative class rallied the public to persevere during the Blitz.

Admission to the Museum is free to all veterans with a valid ID. The Norton’s weekly Art After Dark, a blend of culture and entertainment, runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Museum also will honor veterans with free admission on Veteran’s Day on Nov. 11, 2012.

The schedule for the Nov. 8 Art After Dark is:

4:30-5:30 p.m. – Screening of Shot Up & Shot Down, a new documentary by local director Scott Messmore. The film focuses on three members of the U.S. Army Air Force who served on three different B-17 bombers, were all shot down, survived, sent to three different POW camps, and ended up in the same retirement community in Palm Beach County. A discussion following the screening will feature director Messmore, and one of the crewmen, Irwin Stovroff, who lives in Boca Raton.

5:30 p.m. “Art of the Time,” a docent–led tour of the Museum Collection, featuring works from the 1940’s by Jackson Pollock, Edward Hopper, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Henry Moore, and others.

6:30 p.m.: Docent-led tour of special exhibition Keep Calm and Carry On.

7:45 p.m. Scott Messmore introduces a second screening of Shot Up and Down.
