Thursday, March 23, 2023 – (Jupiter, FL) – The 5thAnnual Cajun Crawfish & Music Festival, sponsored by Good Greek Moving & Storage, returns to Abacoa on Saturday from 10 am – 10 pmand Sunday from 10 am-8 pm.  This premier Cajun Crawfish and Music Festival will celebrate the culture and traditions of Louisiana through food, music, and dance!  Virginia Sinicki from The KVJ Show will serve as the Master of Ceremonies throughout the weekend and bring her personal flair as a local who grew up in New Orleans.

Come get a taste of “N’awlins” with authentic Cajun food featuring a crawfish boil, jambalaya, gumbo, po’boys, Crawfish Monica, muffulettas, red beans and rice, and the famous beignets, and more. There will be a crawfish eating contest again this year on Saturday at 1 pm.

The knowledge of Dwayne’s musical ability, along with his zydeco Hellraisers band members, have over 100 years of combined experience playing Zydeco music, and it shows in every performance. I love helping Jerry Somma host this party every year! (Nobody knows how to host a party like a crazy girl from New Orleans!) Jerry and I love that we can give back to amazing charities like Little Smiles and Maddie‘s fight foundation. ARTS GARAGE to Host Authors Speak Series on Impact of Race on American Society

(Delray Beach, FL – March 23, 2023) In an effort to celebrate and promote black cultural awareness, three of the most respected nonprofit organizations in Delray Beach are again collaborating to present Authors Speak Series 2023, according toCharlene Farrington, Director of Spady Cultural Heritage MuseumMarjorie Waldo, President & CEO of Arts Garage; and Renee Jadusingh, Executive Director of the Community Redevelopment Agency of Delray Beach.

The timely topic of this “free to see” series is The Impact of Race on American Society, offering “interesting and enlightening conversations with three writers who have cultivated a perspective on black cultural awareness through their research and personal experiences.” The first Authors Speak presentation was by Dr. Jasmine Cobb on February 23, and two more events are upcoming.

“Making a difference in the lives of others can be as simple as being aware of your differences and being able to talk from a compassionate perspective,” says Farrington, while Waldo declares, “Arts Garage is proud to continue our third year of collaboration with the CRA and the Spady Museum. Authors Speak is one of the most community events that we produce.”

Jadusingh agrees: “There are many conditions that lead to the development and spread of slum and blight, including lack of understanding of the needs of others. Through this series we hope to share information about the Delray Beach CRAs projects and programs, while shedding light on what others in our community may be experiencing.”

Black Trans Feminism

Thursday, June 15 at 6:00 pm

Bio: Dr. Marquis Bey is a professor of African American Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and English at Northwestern University. Their work focuses on black feminism, transgender and nonbinary identities, abolition, and philosophy. Most recently the author of two books—Black Trans Feminism and Cistem Failure: Essays on Blackness and Cisgender (Duke University Press, 2022)—they continue to work at the intersections of race, gender, and radical politics.

Book: Black Trans Feminism

Black Trans Feminism retools what we mean by blackness, transness, and feminism. No longer simply identities that people are, Bey thinks about these terms as ways of being in other words, blackness, transness, and feminism are politics, they are things one does—radically, subversively. Black Trans Feminism, then, is a book that asks readers to think about what is possible when blackness, transness, and feminism mean radical change instead of simply who or what someone is.

OPEN THE GATES FOR THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEANS!

By Cheryl Alker

Did you know that the tiny plant protein that is a bean delivers a massive health punch? Whether you are eating canned, dried or the frozen variety these legumes/pulses are one of the few foods that give us a powerful combination of protein and fiber at the same time.  The other benefits associated with beans are that they are fat and cholesterol free, are incredibly convenient, are quick and easy to use as well as being incredibly good value.

So below are a few ways that the humble bean can enhance your health.

Balanced Blood Sugar

If you are one of the 29 million in America alone who have been diagnosed with diabetes, then eating beans is definitely a must for you. Pulses contain compounds that naturally inhibit enzymes responsible for starch digestion which makes them a smart choice for controlling blood sugar. In fact they are so potent that eating beans every day has been documented as lowering both fasting blood glucose and insulin.

Cancer Protection

Anti-cancer nutrients are abundant in beans.  Phytochemicals and antioxidants guard cells from DNA damage that can lead to cancerous mutations and beans contain a high dosage of each.  During digestion fiber travels throughout the gut to the colon, where it is fermented by bacteria.  This process produces special cancer-fighting substances know as short-chain fatty acids. So would you believe that just one cup of beans provides 15 grams of roughage which is approximately half of your daily requirement?

Weight Loss

A 2016 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that people who ate approximately three-quarters of a cup of cooked beans daily for six weeks shed close to three-quarters of a pound without making any other changes to their diet. This is probably due to their high fiber and high protein content which together encourages your gut to release hormones that send signals to your brain telling you that you are full. In fact, Danish researchers fed a group of men breakfast patties made from beans, pork or veal and, believe it or not, the bean eaters actually ate12 percent fewer calories later at lunch.

Health experts recommend eating at least three cups a week.  If you are not sure how, then just take a walk down the aisle in your local supermarket that houses the beans. You will be astounded by the variety available, which should make adding these little gems to your diet easier to navigate.

Hearth Health

Pulses contain an incredibly unique protein called 7S globulin which interferes with the body’s ability to manufacture cholesterol. They also contain soluble fiber which literally flushes the cholesterol out of your gut before it able to absorb it.
