The movements are flowing and gentle, but profoundly powerful. The main objective of the practice of Tai Chi is to magnify, strengthen, and encourage the flow of the internal energy, the “chi”.  When the “chi” flows throughout the body, one experiences over-all health, rejuvenation, and internal joy. Led by Josefina McMahon, this class is based on Sun Style Tai Chi which combines Qi gong and Tai Chi. Wear sneakers or closed comfortable shoes and loose top and pants. Classes will be held inside. They say the growing season for vegetable gardening is “flipped” here in South Florida and that winter is preferred because of the extreme summer heat. But if you don’t mind a little sweat on your forehead, and taking a few A/C breaks, then there’s no reason to stop gardening. Led by Nada Virgili, this session will focus on the many tropical vegetables that thrive in hot temperatures and can provide healthy and delicious greens even through the hottest months of the year. Discover new veggies to enjoy and add new flavors to your dinner plate. We’ll also look at what ornamental species will look great on the patio.

Permaculture is a whole systems design philosophy that works with nature to create a healthy, productive, regenerative garden. Come join us and discover a unique way to garden in the tropics.

+ Saturday, July 23 – 11 am to 12:30 pm at Mounts

Course Overview:

Introduction to Permaculture

The first workshop of this new summer garden series will be held live at Mounts where attendees will gain a strong foundation in the ethics and principles that define permaculture design, followed by a plant walk through the Mounts newly planted sunflower garden.

+ Wednesday, July 27 – 6 pm to 7:30 pm on Zoom

The Tropical Food Forest Garden

Summer is the perfect time to begin a tropical food forest garden. This class will cover the basics of forest gardening; participants will get to know essential plants that make up the foundation of a tropical food forest garden, and gain skills to feed friends and family from backyards in the tropical urban environment. Learn how to create balanced, regenerative ecosystems by harnessing the energy of the elements like sunlight, wind, and perhaps the most important sector for a person living in our coastal community—water.

+ Wednesday, August 3 – 6 pm to 7:30 pm on Zoom

Regenerative Soil Building

The foundation of all life in the garden lies in the soil. Learn the basics of building soil by using regenerative practices like composting and growing your own fertilizer. This workshop will provide practical skills to reduce local waste stream, clean up waterways, provide self-renewing fertility, and create abundance.

+ Wednesday, August 10 – 6 pm to 7:30 pm on Zoom

Holistic Garden Care

In the final workshop class, participants will learn the essentials of holistic garden care. From “pests” like iguanas to plant disease, how do we take a whole systems approach to work with nature rather than against it when challenges arise? Leave this class with a strong foundation in whole systems garden care that will bring peace of mind and a new outlook on growing and life in our place that will last a lifetime.

Schools out for summer, but ACES interns are in

0
Buck Martinez

With the 2021/2022 school year coming to an end and the official start of summer just weeks away, what are kids doing to stay busy? Enter the age-old internship – an opportunity for students to work for an organization, sometimes without pay, to gain experience. But with Student ACES, a 501c3 organization dedicated to inspiring and developing high school student athletes to become men and women of character, honor and integrity through character education programs, nothing is age-old, after all the organization is just shy of 10 years of age (many would not know as they’ve impacted the lives of more than 50,000 students throughout Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Broward counties in that short time).

Peaches and Krissy Web

Now in the third year of the internship program, this year six students ages 16-19 from The Student ACES Center in Belle Glade, commonly referred to as The SAC, will intern with the City of Belle Glade from June 13 – August 31, 2022. Via the partnership, Student ACES executive leadership and members of the City of Belle Glade identified students – more than 20 students applied and completed the interview process.

This paid internship provides students with the unique opportunity to work for the government while learning valuable life lessons and career readiness skills. Even more unique, every Friday interns are required to participate in mandatory leadership training at The SAC.

“The leadership training opportunities serve to reinforce our commitment to shaping the leaders of tomorrow,” said Buck Martinez, co-founder of Students ACES and president of ACE Leadership Group. “It’s a unique aspect of our internship program that we firmly believe has a huge impact on the lives of these children as they continue to develop.”

Once again, Student ACES is identifying opportunities to reinforce the importance of giving back to the community while also giving back to the students and their future.

“It’s all about opportunity,” recognized Krissy Webb, Executive Director of Student ACES who founded the organization in 2013 with her father, Buck Martinez. “Students at The SAC are willing to work hard and give back and this partnership with the city of Belle Glade provides students invaluable opportunities to learn and grow as they prepare for the next phase of their journey.”

Tajelia Green, now in her third year at FAMU, sees the value in this opportunity for students in the community.  Tajelia (commonly referred to as Peaches) oversaw the internship program working with Student ACES.  Prime example of seizing the opportunity, but first the opportunity needs to be presented and earned. Peaches is a member of the inaugural class of The SAC and has been instrumental in program design, recruitment and student relations.

TJ Moore, Student Aces

“Student ACES changed my life,” said Peaches. “This organization and all of the students and people involved mean so much to me. I’m eager to continue giving back throughout this summer and for years to come.”

TJ Moore, son of Glades Region Superintendent Angela Avery-Moore, thrived in the internship program last year with The City of Belle Glade. TJ is a constant at The SAC – he takes advantage of all that the organization has to offer; he is a role model.

Student ACES is extremely grateful for the partnership with the City of Belle Glade and the support of Robert Rease, Belle Glade City Manager.

The public is invited to meet two exhibiting artists, Tom Casmer and Roxie Munro, while enjoying the stunning art and the ArtCenter’s signature hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. Admission is free for members and a $5 donation for nonmembers. For more information, visit lighthousearts.org.

“Learn about Tom Casmer’s inspiration for his hand-milled wooden CONSTRUCTS that contrast with sculpted glass pieces from a preeminent private collection in our Spencer Gallery,” says Curator Janeen Mason. “In the Shorr Gallery, meet Roxie Munro, whose award-winning nonfiction children’s books are available for signing. Her original illustrations are showcased along with illustrations from the popular Fancy Nancy series by Robin Priess Glasser.”

Tom Casmer was raised in the Midwest and studied at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, earning a BA Degree in Fine Art/Drawing and Painting. He later studied Design and Illustration, earning a BFA at the School of the Associated Arts (College of Visual Arts), also in St. Paul. Casmer has served on the faculties of the College of Visual Arts and Brown College in Minnesota and the Ringling College of Art + Design in Sarasota, Florida. Over his career, he has also worked as an Illustrator/Designer both in-house and as a freelance artist.
