SCIENCE ADVENTURES ARE BACK FOR THE SUMMER AT COX SCIENCE CENTER AND AQUARIUM

Summer camp sessions are open for kids ages 5-to-12

(WEST PALM BEACH, FLA) – The dog days of summer will be back soon, but not without the coolest of summer camps found at Cox Science Center and Aquarium! CSCA is calling Palm Beach County kids to register for science camps that span their curiosities, including sessions focused on dinosaurs, aeronautics, firework concoctions, robotics, digital filmmaking and more! This will also be the first time that the 5 to 6 age camp groups will return since COVID-19. Camp sessions will carry out from May to early August.

Science Adventures include:

May 30 to June 3: Mindbender Academy (ages 5-12). Join the Mindbender Academy and work together to solve the mysteries of Mindbender Mansion. Learn all about illusions and the wacky tricks that the brain can play on us in this mind-boggling week-long camp! ($250 member/ $275 non-member)

June 6 to 10: Nautical Neighbors (ages 5-12). Wave hello to the Center’s nautical neighbors, junior scientists! Campers will dive into the world of marine biology and discover the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it. ($250 member/ $275 non-member)

June 13 to 17: Galactic Space Explorers (ages 5-12). Time to blast off and become galactic explorers! Join Cox Science as the Center travels into the depths of outer space and learn all about the Milky Way, black holes and more. ($250 member/ $275 non-member)

June 20 to 24: Rainforest Rockstars (ages 5-12). Celebrate World Rainforest Day (June 23) the right way during this week-long camp! Campers will become rockstars of the rainforest as they learn about the different rhythms of the rainforest, from the forest floors to the tops of the tree canopies. ($250 member/ $275 non-member)

June 27 to July 1: Land Before Time (ages 5-12). Travel back in time to the age of the dinosaurs! Campers will become junior paleontologists as they dig for fossils, uncover different types of dinosaurs, and untap the world these gigantic creatures inhabited. ($250 member/$275 non-member) (ONLY SPACES FOR 5-6 AND 10-12 AT THIS TIME)

July 5 to July 8: Muggle Magic! (ages 5-12). Journey to wizarding school and explore the magic of fireworks, the chemistry behind potions, and more in this magical week-long camp. ($195 member/ $220 non-member)

July 11 to July 15: Exhilarating Engineering (ages 5-12.  Have you ever wondered how a bridge is built or why boats float? Dive into this week-long engineering-themed camp. Campers will have the chance to build and race their own boats at the end of the week! ($250 member/ $275 non-member)

July 18 to July 22: SENSEsational Science! (ages 5-12). Learn more about the five senses in this week-long camp, starting with hearing on World Listening Day (July 18th). Campers will examine their senses, the five senses in other animal species, as well as animal senses that we don’t have! ($250 member/ $275 non-member)

July 25 to 29: Awesome Aeronautics (ages 5-12). Get launched into action and be “wowed” by the study of flight! Campers will have a blast learning about physics and aerodynamics as they create catapults, kites, bottle rockets, and more. ($250 member/ $275 non-member)

August 1 to 5: Summer Sum-Up (ages 5-12). Join Cox Science as they put math skills to the test in adding up all of this summer’s camp highlights! Campers will finish the week off with an Annual End-of-Summer Science Spectacular full of games, music, face painting, and the chance to pie your counselors in the face. ($250 member/ $275 non-member)

Tech Camps include:

May 30 to June 3:MinecraftEDU: Coding FUNdamentals (ages 7-12). Take a journey into the digital world of MinecraftEDU and learn the FUNdamentals of coding! Campers will get the rundown of algorithms, sequences, loops and more during this week-long tech camp. ($275 member/ $300 non-member)

June 6 to 10: Robot Olympics (ages 7-12). Go for the gold, campers! Learn the basics of coding and more in this Olympic-themed robotics camp. ($275 member/ $300 non-member)

June 13 to 17: Digital Filmmaking (ages 7-12). Lights, camera, action! Step behind the camera and bring your imagination to life in the Center’s digital filmmaking camp. Learn the basics of set design, filmmaking, and editing in this blockbuster week-long camp. ($275 member/ $300 non-member)

June 20th to 24: The Future of Design (ages 7-12). Become a cutting-edge designer and learn about the innovations in the world of design, including both 3D printing and laser cutting! ($275 member/ $300 non-member)

June 27 to July 1: MinecraftEDU: Coding FUNdamentals (ages 7-12;repeat session from week 1) Take a journey into the digital world of MinecraftEDU and learn the FUNdamentals of coding! Campers will learn about algorithms, sequences, loops and much more during this week-long tech camp. ($275 member/ $300 non-member) (ONLY SPACES 10-12 AT THIS TIME)

Camp sessions will be between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., with drop off from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and pick up between 4:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Before/Aftercare is from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for an additional $15 per day. Summer camps are also available at the Center’s satellite campus located in Jupiter.

Formerly the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, the recently renamed Cox Science Center and Aquarium’s current indoor/outdoor venue features more than 100 hands-on educational exhibits, a 10,000-gallon fresh and saltwater aquarium, digital planetarium, Pre-K focused “Discovery Center,” 18-hole conservation-themed Mini-Golf Course and quarter-mile-long outdoor science trail. One of its celebrated displays includes “Journey Through the Human Brain,” a permanent exhibit that features the most advanced neuroscience research in the world. The Cox Amphitheater hosts daily live science shows, seasonal laser shows, and special event programming. CSCA took on a new name at the end of 2021 when leadership announced a $20 million gift from Palm Beachers, Howard and Wendy Cox, to launch a transformative capital campaign – with a target completion date of 2025.

Palm Beach, Fla.– Over 80 philanthropists, scientists and community leaders gathered at the Palm Beach, FL, home of  Palm Health Foundation trustee and philanthropy committee chair Frances Fisher on April 13, 2022, for a fascinating “Brain Health Innovation” cocktail reception. The event highlighted the foundation’s vision to make Palm Beach County a national leader in brain health advancement and celebrated the cutting-edge research resulting from its $1 million gift to the Florida Atlantic University Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute. The gift helped establish a new program in computational brain science and health, supports four graduate fellowships under the program per year, and funds faculty pilot research projects.

As guests enjoyed cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and Mrs. Fisher’s beautiful home, they met with three of the Ph.D. students who received the Palm Health Foundation fellowships, Yosun Yoon, Joseph McKinley and Jasmine Chan, and learned about their research targeted at understanding the underpinnings and treatment of various brain disorders. Dr. Randy Blakely, executive director of the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute, noted that the outstanding fellows excel in their fields of research, which target data-intensive investigations underlying Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, and depression, among others, that benefit from computational approaches.

“Palm Health Foundation is honored to support these fellows in their contributions to the brain health field,” said Patrick McNamara, president and CEO of Palm Health Foundation. “We know that overall wellbeing is intimately connected to the good health of the brain. Our partnership with the Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute is an example of the foundation’s commitment to fostering partnerships among philanthropists, brain science, community members and care settings that will lead to local and national impact.”

Mrs. Fisher spoke to guests about her own personal commitment to brain health through the establishment of the Frances Fisher Scholarship Fund at Palm Health Foundation to encourage individuals to enter and advance in the mental and behavioral health professions fields. She also praised the foundation for stewarding philanthropic donations toward funding significant research and brain health advancements. “I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Palm Health Foundation in propelling Palm Beach County toward being a national leader in the brain health field,” she said.

The Wellington Art Society (WAS) presented two new art exhibitions: “Love 4 Art” and “Dazzle”. The opening reception took place on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, from 5:00-7:00 pm. “Dazzle” was at Wellington City Hall and “Love 4 Art” was at the Wellington Community Center. It was a great opportunity to meet the artists and vote for your favorite artwork. Other attractions included door prizes, refreshments and a live demo by acrylic artist, Heather Bergstrom. All artwork hanging in the exhibitions is for sale and a portion of the proceeds goes toward WAS Scholarship and Outreach Programs.

Another Successful Tournament

WELLINGTON, FL. – It was a beautiful day filled with excitement and compassion while supporting a great cause at the 2022 Lefty Classic Charity Golf Tournament at the Wanderers Club in Wellington, Florida on April 23rd. 

Family, friends, and sponsors came together to celebrate the life of Steve Silverstein, who passed away from lung cancer in 2018, and to raise awareness and funds for the Kids Cancer Foundation of South Florida. 

A full field of 96 participants gathered to compete in the 4th round of the Lefty Classic. They started their Saturday off by enjoying the beautiful weather followed by 18 holes of golf. Food and drinks were provided throughout the day as a friendly, yet competitive round of golf took place for a good cause. As the fundraising amount is being finalized, they anticipate that they will exceed last year’s $75,000. 

“I feel very proud to see the event grow and with that, we continue to surpass our fundraising goals from each prior year,” said Dan Silverstein, the son of Steve Silverstein.

Founded in 2019 by Dan and Taryn Silverstein, in honor of Dan’s father, Steve Silvertein, The Lefty Classic has continued to grow in popularity and impact by raising funds to support the Kids Cancer Foundation of South Florida’s mission of providing hope and support to local children and families battling childhood cancer and/or blood disorders. They seek to accomplish this by providing compassionate, easily accessible, supportive care services.

“The goal for future years is simple: raise as much money as we can for the Kids Cancer Foundation while having a great time with our dear friends and family,” stated Dan Silverstein when asked about his long-term goals for the event.

The tournament was followed by a silent auction and award ceremony where the winning team, Team Swick, was announced. Team Swick consisted of players Robbie Swick, Adam Dolbow, Kevin Steakin, and Conor Martling. 

“I am once again blown away by the love and energy that Dan puts into this event in memory of his late father. Steve would’ve been so proud of Dan and so happy to know how many families are supported in his honor,” exclaimed Taryn Silverstein after another successful event. The Silversteins are already looking forward to the 2023 Lefty Classic and hope to continue to carry on Steve’s legacy through gathering with friends, family, and supporters to benefit great causes such as the Kids Cancer Foundation.

Famed Humorist Dave Barry Headlines Annual Food for Thought Gala in West Palm Beach

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (April 28, 2022) – Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times best-selling author Dave Barry is this year’s Special Guest at the West Palm Beach Library Foundation’s annual Food for Thought Gala on Saturday, Nov. 5, hosted at the Norton Museum of Art.

Called “the funniest man in America” by The New York Times, Barry has written more than 30 books, including the novels Big Trouble, Lunatics, Tricky Business, and most recently, Insane City. His titles are frequently found on The New York Times Best Seller list. 

Barry won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Commentary for his humor column carried in some 500 newspapers, including the Miami Herald. In announcing the prize, the Pulitzer committee cited Barry’s “consistently effective use of humor as a device for presenting fresh insights into serious concerns.”

“It’s an incredible honor to have this acclaimed writer as our Food for Thought Special Guest,” said Dean W. Dimke, Executive Director of the West Palm Beach Library Foundation. “He has brought joy to millions with his entertaining, thought-provoking books and columns. With his unique ability to use humor to make people think, he is a powerful choice to help promote our cause.”

Barry is appearing at the Foundation’s premier fundraiser for the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach where all proceeds benefit the library’s free programs, services, and resources that enrich and strengthen the community. 

Guests will select a table host from various notable personalities and enjoy an elegant dinner with lively conversation with these local luminaries featuring authors, foodies, historians, artists, media, and community leaders. After taking place at the library for many years, the gala is being held for the first time at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach.

“Our relocation to the Norton Museum of Art gives us a beautiful new setting for this event devoted to the art of literature,” said Dianne Bernstein, Board Chair of the West Palm Beach Library Foundation and Honorary Co-Chair of the Food for Thought Gala. “Having Dave Barry as our Special Guest elevates it even further.”

(Palm Beach Gardens, FL – April 21, 2022) Metropolitan Community Church of the Palm Beach Gardens (MCCPB), the largest faith-based community in Palm Beach County dedicated to serving the local LGBTQ+ community and its family members and friends, will be hosting a Lauren Daigle Tribute Night, featuring Jennell Eve and a special 10-piece band, on Saturday, May 7, starting at 7 pm

A fundraiser for MCCPB, the outdoor concert will be at 7 pm in the event field by the church, located at 4857 Northlake Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens. Attendees should feel free to bring a lawn chair or blanket, and there will be a food truck onsite. 

The concert will offer the music of the extraordinary Lauren Daigle, a winner of two GRAMMY® Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, and four American Music Awards. Her platinum debut album, How Can It Be, produced three number one songs (First, O’Lord, and Trust in You), while the GRAMMY-winning second album Look Up Child featured her triple-platinum smash You Say, the longest-running No. 1 song to appear on any weekly Billboard chart, as well as the platinum selling single Rescue, and gold certified singles Still Rolling Stones and Look Up Child. In addition to her music, Daigle established The Price Fund in 2018, a global foundation dedicated to helping those in need through community initiatives and outreach.

Lauren Daigle’s songs will be performed by a special 10-piece band assembled for this occasion by Jennell Eve.

Following the outdoor concert, MCCPB will present a fabulous drag show inside led by the inimitable Lupita Hollywood.

Tickets are $15 for the tribute concert and $15 for the drag show—or $25 for both if purchased in advance, $30 at the door that night. FAU High School – Jupiter Campus in Partnership with Max Planck Academy Celebrates Inaugural Graduating Class

JUPITER, Fla. (April 22, 2022) – Florida Atlantic University High School – Jupiter Campus in Partnership with Max Planck Academy recently celebrated the inaugural cohort of students’ extraordinary academic performance and research projects at the Senior Research Symposium event hosted at the Max Planck Florida Institute of Neuroscience (MPFI).

            During the event, FAU High seniors presented their research and scholarly findings in both oral and poster formats. An awards presentation portion of the symposium followed, recognizing the 23 exceptional students and their accomplishments which include: four peer-reviewed research papers published; awards of more than $10,000 in grant funding and research awards to support their research endeavors; and numerous research presentations given at university, state and national conferences. 

FAU President John Kelly and David Fitzpatrick, Ph.D., chief scientific director and CEO of MPFI, welcomed guests and kicked off the event recognizing the exceptional FAU High students and their mentors.

“Congratulations to our first graduates of FAU High School – Jupiter Campus in Partnership with Max Planck Academy, who were selected from a pool of top-tier candidates to participate in this unique educational program,” said Kelly. “I am very proud of their many achievements and I look forward to hearing about their future successes.”

FAU High School – Jupiter Campus in Partnership with Max Planck Academy welcomed the first cohort of students in fall 2020, and is a premier, research-focused institute that provides an early university entrance high school experience for STEM-focused juniors and seniors in high school. This unique partnership between FAU, MPFI and the Germany-based Max Planck Society, expanded on similar opportunities for FAU’s graduate and undergraduate students. This extraordinary program provides FAU High students access to the laboratories of MPFI, allowing them to participate in unparalleled education and world-class research opportunities as part of their curriculum. 

“Education and scientific training are key parts of the Max Planck model and partnering with FAU High School has given us the opportunity to expand our impact on the future generation of scientists,” said Fitzpatrick. “It has been inspiring to see the evolution of these students, who are now all well positioned to make important contributions to the world of science and beyond.”

FAU High seniors that successfully complete the program earn a high school diploma and Max Planck certificates, and at least two years of cost-free college credit, leading to unmatched research experiences and outstanding distinction through the FAU Max Planck Honors program and accelerated bachelor’s degree at FAU.

“These incredible students have worked countless hours in laboratories and field research sites to further scientific knowledge and our understanding of the world around us – and this is just the start for these world-changing minds,” Molly Adam, Ph.D., associate director of FAU High School.
