Art, Music and Brain Health Merge for Benefit Event on April 19

ART, MUSIC AND BRAIN HEALTH MERGE FOR AN EVENING UNDER THE STARS ON APRIL 19

Event to Benefit Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, The Palm Beach Symphony and Mind, Music Movement Foundation

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) –  The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens’ (ANSG) tropical oasis and monumental sculptures will be the backdrop for an evening under the stars when art and music unite for a remarkable cause. The Magical Musical Tour: Beatles to Beethoven by the Palm Beach Symphony in partnership with ANSG and Mind, Music Movement Foundation’s (M3f) Voices of Parkinson’s Chorus will take place on Tuesday, April 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gardens. The performance will benefit all three organizations.

Patrick McNamarapresident and CEO ofPalm Health Foundation, will introduce the performance that will raise awareness for brain health and the positive affects music and singing have on neurodegenerative diseases.

“We are excited to help merge the power of the local arts community with the power of our growing brain research community in Palm Beach County,” said McNamara. “There is mounting evidence that listening to music can reduce anxiety, manage blood pressure, and increase mental alertness and memory. The arts offer powerful healing qualities for brain health, especially someone living with a neurogenerative disease like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s.”

Guests will listen to music from the Symphony and Voices of Parkinson’s Chorus while enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the main lawn of the Gardens.

“Art and music are extremely powerful tools that help with an array of wellness components – especially brain health,” said Frances Fisher, Board Chairwoman for ANSG and Board member for M3f. “Arts therapy is excellent at engaging our minds and that can change the way the brain works for the better. We are honored to be able to bring these wonderful organizations together to collaborate towards a common goal and introduce new audiences to one another’s missions.”

M3f is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We offer comprehensive integrative programming to address movement, mobility, balance, speech, nutrition and mental well-being in patients with neurological disorders,” said Beth Elgort, MSW and Founder of M3f. “The main objective of the foundation is to instill confidence, strength, wellness and commitment in class participants and their families. The Foundation provides a resource and motivation for living well with neurodegenerative diseases. Our Chorus meets weekly and focuses on the voice and breath to improve volume and dictation, using popular tunes and voice exercises that everyone can enjoy. Studies have shown that incorporating music into the treatment plan for someone with a neurological disease can increase that person’s confidence and overall wellbeing. What we discovered is the camaraderie and friendship is just as important.”

The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, Inc. is an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) public charity established in 1977 by the prominent sculptor Ann Weaver Norton (1905-1982)A two-acre urban sanctuary and nationally recognized arboretum, the compound comprises the historic Norton House and Artist Studio, exhibition galleries, monumental sculptures and tropical gardens of rare palms and cycads. The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens’ mission is to enrich lives with nature, art and history.

Austin: The Intersection of Texas History, Music and Weirdness

Situated in Central Texas with its own version of the Colorado River running through it, Austin delivers an experience unlike any other in the Lone Star state. From the opulent state capitol decked out in more stars than you can possibly count to the live music spilling out of the bars on Sixth Street to the Mexican free-tailed bats making sunset appearances from their roost under Congress Bridge, there’s an adventure…and a touch of weirdness…at every turn. And, when you’re ready to turn in for the night, the elegant Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta provides a place to bed down in luxury surrounded by the history of Texas’s most intriguing city.

Entertaining History

Within minutes of checking into the Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta in the heart of Austin, the desk clerk enthusiastically recommended Velvet Tacos for lunch. Ready for a taste of Texas, my best friend, Nancy and I dropped off our luggage and walked the short distance to fuel up on a local favorite. In less than a two-block walk, we were exposed to a slice of Austin’s quirky history. On Congress Avenue, a striking bronze sculpture of a woman firing a Howitzer cannon sheds light on the little-known Texas Archive War of 1842. With Austin newly designated as the capital of Texas, Sam Houston attempted to have the state’s archives returned to his namesake city. When local widow and boarding house owner, Angelina Eberly realized what was happening, she made her way to a cannon and fired it alerting Austin residents and stopping the would-be archive thieves in their tracks. Now that’s girl power!

Angelina Eberly Statue

There’s much more history to explore in Austin and an excellent place for an overview is the Texas State Capitol. In keeping with the “everything’s bigger in Texas” motto, this immense three-story structure stands 14 feet higher than the U.S. Capitol building. Constructed with Sunset Red Texas granite, it’s a beauty and holds the title of largest capitol in the country. Inside, opulent details include giant brass door hinges and brass chandeliers in the House of Representatives Chamber with light bulbs spelling out T-E-X-A-S. And there are stars, plenty of stars all over the building. At the top of this architectural marvel stands a 16 foot tall, 2,000 pound Goddess of Liberty statue complete with a huge sword and, of course, a golden star. The equally impressive Capitol grounds span 22 acres and feature 17 monuments dotting the beautifully landscaped lawn.

Embrace Nature

Austin’s 300+ days of sunshine enhance the city’s plentiful outdoor activities. From smaller urban parks with playgrounds to expansive green spaces for hiking and biking, you’ll find a plethora of options for outdoor pursuits. Stroll or bike along the Butler Hike and Bike Trail, kayak or stand-up paddle board in Lady Bird Lake or dip your toes into the Barton Springs Pool – a local favorite.

Just west of downtown, the Barton Creek Greenbelt provides a peaceful escape from city life. Rock formations within the Barton Creek Wilderness Park beckon climbers with challenging routes. And hikers breathe in the fresh air along dog-friendly hiking trails. With 350-acres, Zilker Park also boasts plentiful hiking and biking trails along with access to the Barton Creek Greenbelt and the aforementioned Barton Springs.

Boardwalk at Lady Bird Lake

Eclectic Music History

Although Austin is Texas, it’s music scene isn’t limited to country. There’s folk, reggae, rap, blues, jazz, and more in this eclectic music scene. When the Germans settled the area, they brought their musical heritage along. By the 1880s German music halls lined Pecan Street, now known as Sixth Street. Mexican settlers also contributed to the musical mix and the scene grew from there.

Take a stroll down Sixth Street and you’re bound to find your style of music. Or you can do what Nancy and I did, pop into Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar with all the bachelorette parties and sing along. It’s that kind of town!

Evenings in Austin

When you’re ready to leave the singing bachelorettes behind, focus on the quieter grown-up scene at Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta. Start with a cocktail at Stephen F’s Bar & Terrace overlooking Congress Avenue with idyllic views of the historic Paramount Theater and the shimmering Texas State Capitol.

View from Stephen F’s Terrace

The history theme continues within the walls of the hotel. Named for Stephen Fuller Austin, the “Father of Texas,” responsible for leading 300 families to the region now known as Texas, the hotel first opened its doors on May 19, 1924. The hotel sits on the former location of the state War Building. Insider tip: One of the War Building’s walls still stands and has the distinction of being the oldest wall in Texas. Step into the alley behind the hotel to take a look.

So much has happened within these walls. In 1937 it served as the headquarters for Lyndon B. Johnson’s successful run for House of Representatives. In 2000, George Bush, Sr. utilized the hotel in his presidential campaign. And, the Capital Ballroom was featured in a scene for “Miss Congeniality” starring Sandra Bullock.

Enjoy a Blissful Night’s Sleep

Renovated and restored to its original historic glory, the Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta makes an idea home base for your Austin explorations. And when you’re ready to rest, the luxuriously appointed guest rooms ensure a blissful night’s sleep. With 190 guest rooms including 22 suites, modern amenities and an indoor pool and hot tub, you’ll have a place to relax and soak up all that Austin atmosphere. And if you want to keep your workout routine going, the fitness center has everything you need. Maybe you’ll make your own bit of history with a new record on the fitness center’s Peloton bike. Weirder things have happened. This is Austin, after all!

Why Earth Day is Important

By Carly Cantor

Earth is taken for granted a lot of the time. April is the month for its appreciation, and its infamous holiday, Earth Day, illustrates that compactly. When I was in elementary school, I would usually ignore, or find no interest in Earth Day when it was advertised in the hallways.

Why is Earth Day important? It’s only a day, how can that help? This is a misconception, a fallacy, that too many believe. April is a month where throughout its entirety, many work to ameliorate our planet, not just on one single day, even though that’s when most acknowledge it.

Earth Day, April 22, celebrates our Earth, and also the birth of the Modern Environmental Movement, formed in 1970. It spreads awareness of Earth and its issues as a whole, for example, pollution, littering, climate change, etc.

April is a month of environmental change, not just for the 22nd, so how can you help? Here are a few activities you can partake in to contribute to April and our Earth!

  1. Beach Cleanups. The beach is absolutely filled to its brim with litter, such as plastic bottles or straws leftover by visitors. Simply bringing a trash bag, gloves, and a trash picker to the beach and picking up somebody’s trash not only benefits your environment, but also can help you get in those steps!
  2. Volunteer to clean something local. It can be anything from a street to a river, but if you are aware of a local cleanup looking for participants, do it!
  3. Recycle. Recycling may seem like common sense to many, but for others not so much. Make sure you are recycling glass products, plastic products, tin, aluminum, and steel products, cardboard, and even paper. Another reminder to make sure those products are clean before tossing them in the recycling bin!
  4. Spread awareness to others. Even a simple “Hey, don’t forget to recycle that!” can contribute to the lessening of waste and to the improvement of our planet. While being kind to the environment on your own is also a great thing, reminding others to as well is even more beneficial.

Whether we like it or not, our planet is in obvious danger, and if we don’t attempt to fix the problems we have caused then it may eventually be too late. Take this month to be a part of the solution.

Sincerely,

Your monthly teen talk writer, Carly Cantor
