Impact 100 Palm Beach County is a women’s 501c3 nonprofit organization funding local nonprofit initiatives in southern Palm Beach County–between Boca Raton and Lake Worth. It is comprised of a growing number of women who donate $1,000 annually, pool all funds and vote to award multiple $100,000 grants to nonprofits serving southern Palm Beach County in five focus areas: Arts, Culture and Historic Preservation; Education; Environment and Animal Welfare; Family; and Health and Wellness.

Hosted by William “Bill” Nix, this year’s event theme is “A Salute to Education: Stories of Triumph” and honors AAFF founder James Drayton and takes place on the evenings of February 1, 8 and 15.
A strong advocate for equal rights and equality, the late James Drayton is a former West Palm Beach city commissioner, founder of the annual African American Film Festival, the African American Heritage Bookstore in West Palm Beach, and the Together We Stand Democratic Club, furthering his goal of imparting to future generations the knowledge from his years of experience.
Winner of two NAACP Image Awards, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Motion Picture, LEAN ON ME stars Morgan Freeman as real-life New Jersey High School Principal Joe Clark. Tasked with reforming the school by his old friend and School Superintendent Dr. Frank Napier (Robert Guillaume), Clark tackles gangs, drugs, low test scores and a host of other issues plaguing the school.

+ Seneca Harberger, MD is a family doctor who sees patients at the C. L. Brumback Primary Care Clinic at Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade, FL, and is Program Director for Lakeside’s Family Medicine Residency. He attended medical school at Philadelphia’s Temple University, where he received an MD and an MA in Urban Bioethics. Prior to medicine, he was a high school math and physics teacher in Oakland, CA. After years of focusing on the complexity of life and health care in urban communities, he considers his experience in rural western Palm Beach County as both enlightening and animating.
+ Howard Simon, Ph.D. is a Board member of the Florida Policy Institute and was formerly the longest serving state director for the American Civil Liberties Union. A CCNY graduate, he earned a Ph.D. in legal and political philosophy from the University of Minnesota. At the ACLU, he helped draft the constitutional amendment to restore the right to vote, challenged restrictions on voter registration and efforts to restrict early and Sunday voting, and helped secure passage of the Fair Districts Amendments curbing partisan Gerrymandering. Following his retirement from the ACLU, Dr. Simon created the Clean Okeechobee Waters Foundation to work with biomedical scientists and physicians who have linked toxins produced by harmful algae blooms to neurological diseases, including ALS and Alzheimer’s.
Moderated by Brent Schillinger, MD, co-chair of LWVPBC’s Health Committee. A past president of the Palm Beach County Medical Society who currently chairs the society’s Opioid Healthcare Response Initiative, he received his MD at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He has chaired the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs for both the Palm Beach County Medical Society and the Florida Medical Association, represents the medical community on the Palm Beach Ethics Coalition and serves as vice chair of the Florida Policy Institute a nonpartisan think tank that focuses on the fiscal impact of education, affordable housing, food supply, and health care issues. He holds clinical academic appointments at Nova Southeastern University, Florida Atlantic University, and the University of Miami.

West Palm Beach, Fla. (January 20, 2022) — The weekly TV news magazine exploring timely issues affecting the local and global Jewish communities,mosaic will debut its 43rd season on January 23 on a new station and timeslot: WPBF 25 (our local ABC affiliate) at 11:30 a.m. on Sundays. The show is produced by the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, providing viewers exclusive interviews with some of the Jewish world’s most notable figures. The season runs through April 24, 2022.
The show is hosted by community leader, Susan Shulman Pertnoy. Pertnoy’s mother Barbara Kay, was mosaic’s founder and host for four decades before passing away in 2019. The show continues to address the most critical issues and causes in the Jewish community, including the recent rise of antisemitism, the dramatic growth of the Jewish community of the Palm Beaches, and explorations of how the pandemic has impacted the Jewish people locally and abroad.
The season premiere on Sunday, January 23 features an interview with Michael Oren, one of the most influential Jews in the world and former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, who will discuss America’s problem confronting antisemitism and other urgent topics affecting the Jewish people around the world.
The 2022 season will also feature other notable interviews and topics, including:

In honor of Black History Month, ANSG presents the Third Annual Jazz & Gospel in the Gardens
(West Palm Beach, Fla.) – In honor of Black History Month, the sounds of feel-good music will fill the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens on Sundays during February for the Third AnnualJazz & Gospel in the Gardens.
“Jazz & Gospel in the Gardens creates a musical infusion of art and nature,” said Margaret Horgan, Managing Director for the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. “We are excited to bring back this series for the third year in a row. And what better way to celebrate and honor Black History Month than with award-winning musicians in an outdoor tropical oasis.”
Visitors will have the opportunity to listen to jazz and gospel from visiting world-class artists among the monumental works of Ann Norton on the main lawn. Sandy James picnic boxed lunch will be available for purchase. The series will include music on Sundays from 1 – 3 p.m. in February with the following special performances.

The meeting and presentation will take place at the Wellington Community Center, 12150 Forest Hill Blvd, Wellington. The event will conclude with a presentation by Marcia Greene on stained glass design achieving different effects with glass. The public is invited. Stained glass artist Marcia Greene is originally from New York City. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts with an emphasis on sculpture and jewelry design from SUNY Albany, NY in 1971. When Marcia began working with glass in 1978, she found it to be the ideal medium for her, as it incorporated the three-dimensional aspect of sculpture with the detail and glitter of jewelry making, and she has made it the focus of her art ever since. Besides utilizing thousands of types of glass, Marcia enhances many pieces with metal accents and embellishments and other media such as geodes, crystals, stones, and shells. Marcia says, for her, “design inspiration is everywhere: nature, real life, photos, [my own] imagination,” and her style can run the gamut from Victorian to modern abstract, making each work a different and fascinating experience.
In addition to being an artist, Marcia is a Registered Nurse Board Certified in Psychiatry and Mental Health and currently works in a local Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facility. Marcia is part of a therapeutic treatment team that encourages and guides the clients with substance abuse and mental health issues to use various artistic mediums to create their own works of art to work through their issues. She believes that art and the act of creating has a healing effect on people and is grateful to be able to use her knowledge and talents to help others.

Last weekend it was raining cats and dogs, and this weekend will be bursting with colorful kimonos! Learn all about the classical art of the Japanese kimono (which means “thing to wear”) during the annual Kimono Culture Demonstration at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach.
On Saturday, January 22, deep dive into the kimono’s fashionable history, as well as learn how to properly wear one. Fabric quality, choice of pattern, thread, paint, and color were essential criteria for presenting the rank, age, gender, and refinement of the person wrapped in a kimono.

This live concert presentation is very energetic and includes clapping, stomping, and dancing to the music as singers give praise to God. Certified fitness/yoga instructor Hegina Rodrigues leads this series of classes designed for all abilities. Gentle movements help to increase energy, improve balance, and strengthen muscles. Focusing on breath while moving creates a kind of moving meditation that promotes relaxation, improves mood and confidence. Instructor will be using chair and hand weights (optional) but also doing standing balancing poses with the use of the chair and wall (if you choose to stand). Botanical photography is one of the most popular subjects for camera enthusiasts, and learning how to choose your composition, your lens, and how to find the right light, makes this art even more fun. Learn the key concepts of nature photography as well as camera techniques. Participants are encouraged bring a pad or tablet for note-taking, sun hat, water, camera, tripod, cable release or switch, zoom lens, and macro lens or close-up attachments if possible.
** Session I (February 5): Classroom instruction will consist of a narrated slide show, which highlights key concepts in nature photography; includes handouts and a brief period for Q&A. The remainder of Session I will be in the garden, practicing your techniques.
** Session II (February 12): The focus will be on flowers and foliage along the walkways throughout the gardens. Space is limited so Jerry can spend individual time with each photographer during the class.

Treat your kids to a Creative Nature Tour with Professor Screech. As the world’s most “Official Expert,” the Professor will take us on a special journey through the natural world inside the Garden, inspired by Sean Kenney’s Nature POP! exhibit, featuring sculptures created with 800,000 LEGO® bricks. Learn fun facts about the Garden’s insects, animals, and plants, and create your own nature sculpture using natural and repurposed materials. This tour is designed for youth ages 8 to 13, but all ages are welcome.

Nature Journaling is the act of recording your experiences on this planet: your observations, perceptions, questions, facts, and phenomena. It is citizen science, it is art, it is creative, therapeutic, and fun. This workshop will be led byAutumn Kioti. Materials are provided, participants should feel free to bring their own journal and media.

Join us for this fun, guided tour of Sean Kenney’s Nature POP! exhibit, featuring 40+ sculptures made with 800,000 LEGO® bricks. Learn how animals use color in their everyday lives and how color affects humans too. Create a colorful art project to take home. The tour and art project will be led by local artist Hegina Rodrigues.

Appropriate for all ages, this fun, guided tour of the new Moai at Mounts exhibit will explain how artist Dennis MacDonald created the three massive moai replica sculptures as a tribute to the Rapa Nui culture and will explore the history of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and the ingenious methods the Rapa Nui people developed to grow food and live on an island while conserving limited resources. Kids will be able to create their own sculpture, using recycled materials. Fee includes project materials and a book on the moai of Rapa Nui.

Take your love bug on a tour that will delight your senses and immerse you in a world of beauty. You and your Valentine will be guided through the gardens by MBG docent Nada Vergili, who will introduce you to some fun stories, legends, and cultural uses of plants from around the world in the realm of sensuality and love. From flower symbolism to aphrodisiacs, plants have been a doorway to romance for thousands of years. Sample some strawberry/lavender scones and some refreshing herbal iced tea.

This dog-and-family-friendly monthly event is held throughout the Garden. Bring your beloved pooch to enjoy a relaxed garden stroll. There are many great spots to capture family photos for posting online with #mountsbotanicalgarden.

Horticulturist Joshua Spall will lead a special tour of Florida native plants located throughout the Garden. Learn the value of using native plants in the landscape and why it’s important to our environment.

Reconnect with Gardening and POP some color into your landscape. The Mounts Winter Plant Sale returns with an estimated 35 vendors in select Garden areas. This smaller plant sale will offer a great selection of plants, shrubs, trees, and garden accessories. Visitors can stroll and shop in a relaxed environment and also enjoy Sean Kenney’s Nature POP! featuring 40+ sculptures, created from LEGO® bricks, on display throughout the Garden. The Mounts Botanical Nursery and Garden Thrift Shop will be open with a variety of colorful plants and unique treasures for the home and garden.

Reiki Healing – Sound Bowls Meditation Class

This wildly popular class is back. Reiki is a powerful healing tool that helps release tension and stress so you can connect with your higher self. Soothing, pure sounds help us connect to the present moment so we can relax and center ourselves. During this class you will be guided through a meditation, a Reiki practice, and sound healing. You will leave feeling harmonized and refreshed. Certified Meditation Teacher and Sound Healer Jessica Prestia will lead this class. Class will be held in the Exhibit Hall or on a shady lawn, weather permitting.Bring water, yoga mat, and/or towel.

This invigorating class is designed to encourage students to strengthen their bodies and cultivate the quieting of the mind and senses. Traditional postures are practiced while emphasizing alignment, core strength, flexibility, balance as well as breath control. Class concludes with a silent or guided meditation. Certified Yoga and Meditation Teacher Heather Bergwill instruct. Class is open to all levels and will be held in the Exhibit Hall. Wear comfortable clothes, bring water, yoga mat, and a towel or small pillow to support neck or back.
A Newcomer’s Guide to Gardening in Florida—No More Fear!

If you recently moved to South Florida from a northern state, you may have noticed that things are “just a tad bit” different down here. While we love being so close to the tropics, growing plants in a place that seemingly hosts just about every bug known to man, only has two main seasons (i.e. “hot” and “hotter”), and sandy soil that absorbs water faster than aShamwow, might present challenges even for an expert gardener. Learn which types of plants thrive in this climate, how to improve your soil quality, plants that are ideal for sun/shade or a little bit of both, and some attractive alternatives to what you’re used to seeing up north. Conquer your fears and let’s do gardening the South Florida way. Class will be led by Nada Vergili.

Show yourself and your family members some love with this health and wellness day of adult and kid-friendly activities and classes. Enjoy some SoFlo Snow (bubbles), Latin jam dance, and live music with drums, viola, and sound bowls. Activities and classes include Leaf Printing, Nature Wands, Nature Journaling, Flow Art Hoops, Reiki & Sound Healing, Gentle Yoga & Meditation, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Yoga Nidra & Buteyko Breathing. The MBG Nursery will be open from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, and master gardeners will be available for questions. Come learn about cultivating native and medicinal plants and how to grow them for your health and wellness goals. Plants will be available for sale during that time.

Bringing the awe and wonder of Easter Island to West Palm Beach is this new permanent installation of three imposing moai statues, replicas of the iconic monolithic, human figures located on Rapa Nui, Chile. Designed by artist Dennis MacDonald with great attention to authenticity and detail, each of the statues is made of solid, reinforced, poured concrete and has been stained to create a weathered appearance. The larger moai stands 20 feet tall and wears a “hat” known as pukao, two additional pukao rest on the ground.
