ARE YOU READY FOR THE 27TH ANNUAL PALM BEACH HOLIDAY BOAT PARADE?

What you need to know about viewing, boat registrations, toy donations, and bridge openings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

North Palm Beach, FLA. – (November 18, 2021) – The Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County’s (MIAPBC) Palm Beach Holiday Boat Parade will take place on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021, from 6 – 8 pm. This free family-friendly event is led by a traveling firework display and features up to 80 holiday-themed boats. Beginning in North Palm Beach, small boats, sailboats, and mega yachts, all decked out with millions of twinkling holiday lights, navigate up the Intracoastal Waterway to the iconic Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse.

The parade can be viewed in person along the parade route or live via the WPBF Facebook page, the WPBF mobile app, or the WPBF website at wpbf.com. A variety of public waterfront locations are available for viewing, including: all public parks along the parade route, North Palm Beach Country Club, Waterway Cafe, U-Tiki, Jetty’s, Harborside Place, Charlie and Joe’s at Love Street, and the Square Grouper Tiki Bar. Please bring an unwrapped toy to your viewing destination. Volunteer “toy boats” with Toys for Tots signage and uniformed Marines will make dockside pickups during the parade. Spectators are asked to wave a flashlight if they have toys to donate. By boat, viewing suggestions are Ski Beach or anywhere else between Donald Ross Rd. and Indiantown Rd. Boat anchoring in front of the North Palm Beach Country Club or North Palm Beach Marina is prohibited. The fireworks grand finale takes place at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse.

Boats must be registered by November 30, 2021, to be part of this treasured holiday tradition. It’s free to register and entering vessels are eligible for up to $10,000 in cash and prizes. The vessels travel by Safe Harbor North Palm Beach Marina and the MIAPBC headquarters in North Palm Beach where a panel of judges evaluate each vessel based on lights, enthusiasm, and themed decor. The parade theme this year is “Merry and Bright.” The judges for 2021 include North Palm Beach Mayor Darryl Aubrey, Dan Lund from Freedom Boat Club, the Honorable Karen Marcus, Palm Beach County Commissioner Maria Marino, Palm Beach Gardens Vice Mayor Chelsea Reed, Lori Sousa from Sea Land Insurance, Juno Beach Vice Mayor Peggy Wheeler, and Jupiter Mayor Todd Wodraska.

The toy drive, benefiting Toys for Tots and Little Smiles, is currently in progress. The community is invited to participate in giving joy to a child during the holidays by donating toys, money, or purchasing festive boat parade apparel. Toys are collected, by land, at participating businesses throughout Palm Beach County for Little Smiles and by boat the evening of the parade for Toys for Tots. Money can be donated directly to the MIAPBC to purchase toys which will be divided amongst both charities. A variety of custom designed boat parade apparel is available online. All apparel proceeds are used to purchase toys.

“The need for toys will be even greater this year in our community,” said Executive Director  Alyssa Freeman. “We encourage monetary donations which allows us to fulfill gifts for all age groups. The Palm Beach Holiday Boat Parade Committee will split funds between Little Smiles and Toys for Tots to buy new toys for kids in need this holiday season.”

The bridge openings are estimated to be open for approximately one hour. Parker Bridge will open around 6 p.m.; PGA Bridge will open around 6:15 p.m.; Donald Ross Bridge will open around 7 p.m.; Indiantown Road Bridge will open sometime around 7:30 p.m.; Jupiter Federal Bridge will open around 7:45 p.m.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS OF SOUTH FLORIDA RECEIVES INNOVATION AWARD
FOR DIGITAL INCLUSION PROGRAM

Award celebrates work to provide technology equity to vulnerable communities

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Community Partners of South Florida (CPSFL) received the Nonprofit Innovation Award at Nonprofits First’s 2021 Hats Off Nonprofit Awards on October 5, 2021 for the organization’s work closing Palm Beach County’s “digital divide,” the gap between those who have access to computers and the internet and those who do not. The awards were presented by Nonprofits First, and the Nonprofit Innovation Award, presented this year by Florida Power & Light Company, recognizes creative and nontraditional approaches to solving community challenges.

The challenge CPSFL is solving is inequitable technology access and education in Palm Beach County’s vulnerable communities. According to the 2014-2018 US Census American Community Survey in Palm Beach County, 17 percent, or 92,000 households, were not connected to high-speed internet. Further breakdown of the statistics shows those households earn 2.3 times less income, are 4 times less likely to have at least a bachelor’s degree and were expected to live 8.4 years less. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the issue, with the internet becoming a vital resource as schools and workplaces went remote, and access to nearly everything from telemedicine, to e-commerce, to virtual social interaction.

With a grant from Quantum Foundation, in partnership with Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, CPSFL the launched the Digital Inclusion Program—the innovation recognized by community leaders at the 2021 Hats Off Nonprofit Awards. Successful program delivery relies on collaboration from multiple partners including the School District of Palm Beach County and the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County. CPSFL deploys three full-time technology navigators and a project manager to work directly with residents in their homes or at community sites to provide internet service, devices, training, tech support, and educational content. Residents in the program’s target areas, including western communities of Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay, Riviera Beach, and West Palm Beach, are provided with needed services — either access to Wi-Fi, hardware to connect, education, or all these things on a case-by-case basis.

“Technology and digital literacy are quickly becoming the newest disparity leaving our most disconnected neighborhoods behind, causing detrimental consequences,” said Jaime-Lee Bradshaw, CPSFL’s chief strategy officer. “Access to broadband and having digital skills have become essential in our daily lives. Removing barriers and empowering residents through training and resources is what true equity looks like. It’s a small but important step toward improving some of the social and economic disparities effecting our community.”

Key audiences for the Digital Inclusion Program are school-age children, families, the unemployed and under-employed, returning citizens, veterans and the homeless. “We all have the same dreams,” said Digital Inclusion Program director, Nick Savage. “We want our kids to successful. We want to be healthy. And we want to have peace. Technology is a key piece to get there because it is about delivering solutions. We can catch dreams at the speed of need!”

Palm Health Foundation Donors Honor
Nursing and Behavioral Health Professions Scholarship Recipients

West Palm Beach, Fla.– On November 2, 2021, Palm Health Foundation donors came together to honor the foundation’s 2021 nursing and behavioral health professions scholarship recipients at Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach, FL. The event was an opportunity for scholarship recipients to be recognized for their commitment to their professions and to meet the donors supporting their education and career advancement. The 2021 scholarship program invested $424,188 in 62 students pursuing undergraduate, graduate and doctorate programs at South Florida universities. Frances Fisher, who generously created The Frances Fisher Scholarship Fund at Palm Health Foundation where she serves as a board member and philanthropy committee chair, underwrote the scholarship reception at Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens where she serves as chairwoman.

Mrs. Fisher opened the program by welcoming the 113 guests to the Gardens and recognizing the care and compassion the scholars will bring to their patients throughout their careers. Denise Bober, Palm Health Foundation board chair and The Breakers Senior Vice President, Human Resources, told her family’s poignant personal story about establishing The Sutton Kailey Nursing Advancement Fund. Named for her granddaughters, born just 24 weeks into her daughter Melissa’s pregnancy, the fund “honors our precious miracle Sutton and memorializes her angel sister Kailey,” Bober said. “Our little Kailey shined her presence on this earth for a mere 24 hours when God called her to come to Heaven. Baby Sutton remained brave and strong, survived heart surgery and spent 111 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit before we were able to take her home. To this day we are overwhelmed with gratitude and want to ensure that other families have the same nurturing, quality care when they need it most.”

Bober went on to recognize the 2021 scholars and their donors, including Frances Fisher, Pam Gladstone and Elizabeth Rosenthal representing the B.J. & Paula Harris Fund Scholars, and Jill Merrell and the 2021 John T. Merrell Scholarship Fund. Scholars also received awards from several funds at Palm Health Foundation, including: The Andrew P. Barowsky Scholarship Fund; The Debra Coffman Howe Nursing Scholarship Fund; The Charles Norton Adams Nursing Endowment Fund; The Helen K. Persson Nursing Education Scholarship Fund; The Joseph Dolce Surgical Nursing Scholarship Fund; The Peter and Elinka Ordway Nursing Scholarship Fund; and The Palm Health Foundation Nursing Advancement Fund.

Recognizing the enormous challenge the scholars have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, Palm Health Foundation president and CEO, Patrick McNamara, saluted the students. “You are here because you’ve demonstrated dedication, perseverance, and a true desire to serve your neighbors through this pandemic and beyond,” he said. “Palm Health Foundation is proud to support, honor and uplift you as you continue your journey.”

Palm Health Foundation has granted more than $3.5 million in nursing scholarships to over 1,000 nursing students for advanced education since its founding in 2001 and recently expanded its scholarships to include the behavioral health field. The scholarships are administered by the George Snow Scholarship Fund and encourage individuals with financial need to enter and advance in the nursing and mental/behavioral health professions. For more information, please visit  www.scholarship.org.
