(West Palm Beach, FL.) — To celebrate 80 years of voluntarism, the Junior League of the Palm Beaches (JLPB) recently hosted a Day of Impact, an entire day of service focusing on completing one day, large and small projects for nonprofits throughout Palm Beach County. JLPB assisted nonprofit partners that they have worked with for many years, some of which were founded by the 700+ women member organization.
“I am so proud to stand alongside these women who are dedicated to improving our community and making a difference to help others, not just during our Day of Impact, but every day,” said Julie Rudolph, President of the Junior League of the Palm Beaches. “We lead, we educate and we train all while making our community a better place to live, work, play and volunteer. Our League is always looking for like-minded women who have a passion for improving our community. Our members are the heart and soul of our organization.”
JLPB sent volunteers to 9 community partners with 25 volunteer shifts for JLPB members from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. simultaneously throughout the county. More than 100 volunteers and nearly 300 service hours were provided as part of this one day initiative.
Volunteers completed beach cleanups, gleaned produce, packed period supply packages, refreshed outdoor spaces and wrote letters to men and women in the armed forces overseas. Wellington Art Society to Feature Sharon Koskoff “The Duchess of Deco” for Their April Meeting
The Wellington Art Society will feature a presentation by artist and author Sharon Koskoff known as “The Duchess of Deco” for their April 14, 2021 meeting.
The meeting and presentation will take place through the Wellington Art Society’s virtual Zoom link, which is distributed via e-mail to all members. A meet-and-greet will begin at 7 p.m., followed by the member spotlight and a brief meeting. The meeting will conclude with the highlight of the event; a presentation by Sharon Koskoff entitled “Confessions of a Public Mural Artist: Murals of the Palm Beaches… Bigger is Better!” The public is invited. RSVP by e-mail to presidentofwas@gmail.com.
Sharon Koskoff, “The Duchess of Deco”, is a full-time professional artist and published author known for her Decometric Murals, graphic designs, public art installations and love of Art Deco architecture. Her love for art began when Koskoff was a young girl, playing with the sewing machines and fabric scraps in her father’s ladies’ blouse factory. When she was 14 years old, her newly married older sister asked her to paint a mural in her apartment. That was the beginning of a now 40-year long career of painting public murals.
Koskoff works exclusively in acrylic, water-based paints for her public murals. She also creates collage and public art installations using found objects. Koskoff says that she likes to “…collect things that I know one day will be useful to me… I can see the potential in someone else’s discards.” She draws her inspiration from teaching, embracing the challenges of new commissions and working within her community.
Her most recent book, Murals of the Palm Beaches is the winner of a silver medal from the Florida Book Awards (FBA) in Tallahassee for Visual Arts, as well as a silver medal from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association (FAPA) in Orlando for Education. This book tells the history of large-scale murals and explores how public art has helped to revitalize downtowns and create landmarks in Palm Beach County.
Koskoff is a Muse Award Winner for Arts Educator of the Year 2014-16 from the Cultural Council of PBC. She is a well-known tour guide and lecturer on the architecture and styling of Twentieth Century design as seen in her book, Art Deco of the Palm Beaches. Mentored by Miami Beach’s “Queen of Art Deco”, Barbara Baer Capitman, she is the founding president of the Art Deco Society of the Palm Beaches (ADSPB), a non-for-profit historic preservation organization established in 1987, celebrating 34 years of service.

County and YMCA of the Palm Beaches Partnering to Bring New Facilities,
Amenities to Lake Lytal Park
West Palm Beach, FL (March 16, 2021) – The Palm Beach County (PBC) Board of County Commissioners recently approved a resolution authorizing the YMCA of the Palm Beaches (YMCA) to lease approximately five acres in Lake Lytal Park for 50 years with one 50-year extension option. The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department (PBC Parks) and the YMCA are partnering to bring new facilities, amenities, and improvements to Lake Lytal Park, located at 3645 Gun Club Road in West Palm Beach. PBC Parks is planning to replace the Aquatic Center and relocate it adjacent to the YMCA’s facilities. The new Aquatic Center inside Lake Lytal Park will include both competition facilities as well as other water-based recreational amenities. Improvements planned by the YMCA include an Olympic-style skate park and training facility, state-of-the-art community center/health and fitness facility, and a child care center. The design development phase for both the Aquatic Center and the YMCA amenities are expected to commence shortly and last approximately 12 months. The construction of the both the Aquatic Center and the YMCA amenities could commence by late 2021.

The agreement ensures that both PBC Parks and the YMCA construct facilities and infrastructure improvements at their own expense. The YMCA will be building the Olympic-style skate park and training facility as Phase I, the community center/health and fitness facility as Phase II, and an indoor gymnasium and child care center as Phase III. The YMCA is currently lining up major donors who might want their namesake attached to this essential community center, located along the busiest east-west corridor (Southern Blvd) in Palm Beach County, leaving a legacy for years to come.
“Public-private partnerships between YMCAs and municipal Parks and Recreation Departments are thriving throughout the country. We look forward to this cooperative project at Lake Lytal Park being a shining example of how these types of collaborative relationships can greatly benefit the community,” said Tim Coffield, CEO and President of the YMCA of the Palm Beaches. “We are grateful for the leadership of County staff, the support of our County Commissioners, and we are excited to bring our collective vision to fruition.”
“The possibility to partner with the YMCA of the Palm Beaches to develop and collocate world class recreation facilities at Lake Lytal Park is a distinctive and timely opportunity that will benefit the residents of Palm Beach County for years to come,” said Eric Call, Director, Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department.
In addition, within two years of the county’s completion of the aquatic facility inside Lake Lytal Park, the YMCA will handle staffing, programming, and operational management of the facility, which is projected to significantly reduce PBC Parks’ operational expenses.

(Palm Beach, FL.) – The record-breaking 8th Annual Palm Beach Empty Bowls event raised $105,263 for the Palm Beach County Food Bank to help the thousands of hungry residents in our community. More than 650 attendees purchased soup at the February 26th drive-through event at The Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach. Chairpersons were Cordella and Rick Miessau.
“Cordella and I are thrilled that so many neighbors came out to support the mission,” said Rick Miessau. “The pandemic has exposed how easy it is for people to become food insecure, and it is hard to appreciate that one in six people living in Palm Beach County do not know where they will get their next meal. That is why we were honored to lead this event to help alleviate hunger in our own backyard.”
Empty Bowls is a national grassroots event that raises money for hunger relief. The unique event invited the public to “eat simply, so others can simply eat.” Guests received a basic meal of fresh baked bread from Old School Bakery, signature soups donated from local chefs, and water, all served by community leaders and local celebrities at this year’s reimagined drive-through pickup.
“We are elated with this year’s turnout given the pandemic circumstances,” said Jamie Kendall, CEO of the Palm Beach County Food Bank. “We could not address this increased need without community partners like Bethesda-by-the-Sea and the restaurants and volunteers making this event possible. For the past eight years, Bethesda-by-the-Sea has underwritten the event, which has raised more than $600,000 to support our mission.”
The Rev. Burl Salmon, Associate for Christian Formation, Pastoral Care and Outreach at The Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, hosted a cooking event before Empty Bowls as an additional fundraising component. Attendees paid $50 per ticket and watched Father Burl cook Curried Carrot Soup and explained why this concoction is his favorite. Additionally, Chef Robert Coleman from Joshua Catering at the Lord’s Place recorded a video of him cooking his famous Lumberjack Chili Soup (with chocolate as a special ingredient!) to drive up even more interest in the event. Chef Robert’s Cooking Corner lives on at https://youtu.be/_m_SR5FQHRU.
“We are grateful to partner with the Palm Beach County Food Bank each year for this important fundraiser, and we are overjoyed that we were able to raise over $100,000 for our neighbors in need,” said Fr. Salmon. “We look forward to Empty Bowls every year, but this is an especially significant time with the increased need due to COVID-19. Service is a part of who we are, and this event is the perfect way to serve others in Jesus’ name.”
The Platinum Ladle sponsors for the 8th Annual benefit included Cheney Brothers, Perdue and Smithfield Farmland. Gold Ladle Sponsors included Axis Redistribution, Pam & Brian McIver and Debbie and Michael Pucillo. Silver Ladle Sponsors included Beyond Meat, Censea, Consorzi, Darnel, Dep River Chips, Dole, F. The Food Bank procures food from grocery stores, restaurants, food distributors, wholesalers and other sources and provides it to almost 200 local community partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and residential housing programs.
