My Hindsight Bucket List

With so many possible experiences to explore in our lives, many people—especially travelers—have bucket lists. I have to confess, I don’t. But even without the purposeful strategy of a bucket list, my travels have brought forth some incredible adventures.

Hanging out with penguins in Antarctica, following the Great Migration in Tanzania, driving a reindeer sleigh in Norway and marveling at the Northern Lights in the Swedish Lapland and Alaska are among my bucket list-worthy travel tales. And I’m thankful for each of these treasured memories.

I’m also thankful for what I call hindsight bucket list experiences. These are the adventures that sometimes go awry—and I seem to attract them. The nonsense and the mishaps often make the best stories and memories. Here are a few of my classics.

Hindsight Bucket List on Travel with Terri for Around Wellington
Jungle Bound in Belize

Road Tripping Through Belize

Perhaps not the most thought out plan, but my friend and travel cohort, Vanessa, and I decided to embark on a 12-day road trip through Belize. We rented a car from a local with upwards of 100,000 miles, a radio that randomly adjusted its volume and a transmission on its very last leg. It served us well for about half the trip before breathing its last breath. The replacement vehicle was no better, yet we forged ahead through the jungles…literally.
We tagged crocodiles with a conservationist group and hand-fed howler monkeys at a sanctuary dedicated to the world’s noisiest primates. We also had private Garifuna drumming lessons—which we failed miserably. And then we spent the night on a jaguar preserve.

Occupying over 150 square miles in the southern Belizean jungle, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve harbors stealthy and elusive jaguars along with wild boars, snakes and all manner of creatures. We expected this tantalizing threat of danger. We also knew the inherent risk of two women staying alone in a place where cell service is a distant memory and all other preserve visitors wisely get the hell out before nightfall. But it wasn’t the animals or the stupidity that gave me the only injury from the entire trip. It was the toilet.

The less than charming compost throne was elevated to a height that required the use of a two-legged, clip-on stool to access it. At 5’7”, Vanessa could maneuver without the use of the so-called stool. At 5’2”, I couldn’t. Climbing up and positioning myself in my best hover position, it only took a few seconds for the stool to break loose and send me sprawling face-first on the filthy floor and into a bucket filled with peat moss. I’ll spare you the more graphic details of my predicament but suffice it to say, I was a bloody urine-soaked mess. Why would that be on a hindsight bucket list? I have no idea.

Friedrichsbad Spa, Baden Baden, Germany

The Naked Spa Incident in Germany

Another trip with Vanessa brought a revealing adventure. We had spent a couple of weeks road-tripping along Germany’s Fairytale Route. Our experiences included champagne with Sleeping Beauty, a visit to the home of the Seven Dwarfs and full immersion in the stories of the Brothers Grimm. We drove on the Autobahn at speeds approaching 130mph…well, she drove, I navigated and tried to decipher unfamiliar road signs. We sampled German beer and ate almost every type German sausage we could find. And then, we got naked.

We’re all familiar with the saying, “when in Rome, do as the Romans.” The same holds true for Baden-Baden. Located in the foothills of the Black Forest, Baden-Baden is known for its elegant hotels, sophisticated lifestyle, health spas, and mineral-thermal baths. And its most famous spa is Friedrichsbad – a traditionally nude spa. If we were going to experience the true Baden-Baden bathing experience, the clothes had to come off.

Friedrichsbad’s Roman-Irish bathing experience is comprised of 17 stations varying from a sequence of warm and hot dry air baths, a soap and brush massage, steam baths, thermal showers, and thermal pools. We checked in at the reception desk and signed up for the works. It was here that we were informed we had arrived on co-ed day. It just keeps getting better, doesn’t it?

Entering the locker room where several men and women wandered about in various stages of undress we discreetly averted our eyes. Then it was our turn. We located our lockers and began to undress. Inside the locker was the best thing I had seen all day – a large sheet which was to be used as my towel. I couldn’t wrap that thing around me fast enough.
My glee at being wrapped up in the sheet vanished at the first station – a room full of showers with no curtains. The sheet took its place on a hook and sent me off on my naked way alone. Well, actually not alone, there were plenty of other naked bodies to keep me company.

I managed to make it through the afternoon and while I can’t say this was the most comfortable experience in my travels, it was definitely one of the most enlightening. Artists will often say the human body is a work of art. The question is what type – a masterpiece or something abstract?

Piranha Fishing in Peru Travel with Terri
Hooking Piranha!

Girls Gone Wet & Wild in the Peruvian Amazon

While I loved everything about Peru including the famed Machu Picchu wonders, I must admit my favorite experiences were in the Peruvian Amazon. Traveling with four New York girlfriends, we ventured deep—and I mean deep—into the Amazon through the muddy waters of the Madre de Dios.

On our first morning, we headed out early to fish for piranhas because…why not? Our goal was to catch enough of the aggressive little creatures to eat them for lunch before they ate us. Our guide, Wilson, provided primitive fishing poles and raw meat for bait. Yes, raw meat.

You have to be quick to hook a piranha. They greedily attack the meat as soon as it hits the water. Although small in size, their notorious teeth are razor sharp. Our group’s expedition was fraught with bad casting and less than graceful removal of the hooks from the spikey mouths of the fish. Yet it yielded 45 piranhas, which was more than enough for lunch.

With a successful fishing expedition behind us, we boated further down river for a swim. Someone probably should have asked if the piranha would be following us, but we really didn’t want to know. At the urging of Wilson, several of us jumped into the water. It wasn’t long before we started to drift as the currents shifted and it became imperative that we get back into the boat. That’s when I learned there was no ladder. Once again my height betrayed me as I was unable to touch the bottom. I knew this wouldn’t end well.

I tried once, twice, three times before hoisting myself up. A lovely New Zealand woman extended a helping hand which unfortunately landed inside my swimsuit bottoms. She tossed me into the boat headfirst in true bowling ball fashion as I frantically grabbed hold of someone’s ankles. Unfortunately, it was Captain Freddy and my forceful grab sent him overboard. Whoops!

On the final night of our stay in the jungle, a shaman from a nearby village was called in to cleanse our spirits with a flowering bath. I’m fairly certain Captain Freddy requested this. That poor man had his work cut out for him. We sat expectantly in a semi-circle, legs crossed while he roamed around us chanting and sprinkling our heads with flowers and water stopping now and then to fortify himself with a puff on his cigarette. I’m not sure the cleansing had any real effect on our spirits, but we sure did smell a lot better doused in flowers.

Live Like Jake’s Virtual Poker-4-Prevention Charity Tournament A Huge Success

2020 “Be the Light” Award recipients, Granger and Amber Smith, who were recognized for their philanthropic efforts and charitable contributions dedicated to the River Kelly Fund.

Palm Beach Gardens, FL – Live Like Jake’s annual “Poker 4 Prevention” Charity Tournament was held the evening of October 22nd. Close to fifty poker players participated on-line and raised enough funds to provide nearly 20 more self-rescue swim scholarships to children in need.

“Everyone had a wonderful time thanks to our generous sponsors: Jedd & Dara Canty, Allyson Sullivan at Lang Realty, and Kay Coastal Designs,” said Keri Morrison, organization founder and mother to Jake, who was lost in a tragic drowning incident. “Our 2020 participants helped us to raise funds to support drowning prevention and created awareness of the importance of safety measures that should be in place in and around water.”

There wasn’t a dry eye in sight as the 2020 “Be the Light” Award was presented to Granger and Amber Smith for their philanthropic efforts and charitable contributions dedicated to the River Kelly Fund, named in honor of their three-year-old son who drowned last June. The Smiths shared their story and reception of the award on their YouTube channel in an emotional video called “Our Unexpected Surprise:” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JV8Av3sSzcE.

The second annual event was held virtually due to the pandemic, yet it still proved to be an ace-in-the-hole thanks to the top three poker tournament winners who donated their winnings back to Live Like Jake. Winners were: 1st place – James Hoy; 2nd place – Sean Gardiner; 3rd place – Ethan Ruby; 4th place – Kenneth Botte; and 5th place – Nancy Bryson. The drawing for a one-week cabin vacation in Helen, Georgia was won by Kyle Holbrook. The Halloween costume contest for Best Poker Face was won by Rex Knoth.

Working Mom Hacks: 10 Tricks for Keeping a Spotless House

Working Mom Hacks: 10 Tricks for Keeping a Spotless House

Do you know that 4 out of 10 women in the United States are the sole providers of their family today? According to a report, in 1960, it was only 1 out of 10. So there has been a global rise in female workers around the world.

One of the main drivers is the reduced gender gap globally. Although it is still not close enough to the male segment of the society, the rate of female employment has been growing steadily.

Working moms find it tough to have a work-life balance. In addition to their work, they have to care for their family, and they have to keep their household in a spit spot condition.

Working moms support their families, both financially and domestically. Being a working mom, you must find yourself in a difficult position. But don’t worry, we have you covered; here are some handy little tricks to keep your house clean with a busy schedule:

1.    Teach Your Kids

There is only so much that you can do all by yourself. It does not matter how much time you put in keeping your house spotless. You will always have your hands full as long as there are children in your home.

One of the easiest ways to do it is to teach manners to your kids. You should get your children to help you with your daily chores. Distribute the tasks among them so you can easily manage all of them.

2.   Be Smart

Hard work is not the most fruitful way to succeed. Sometimes you have to be smart about it. Otherwise, you can only manage to burn yourself out.

One way to do it is to make a to-do list. Organize your list on the basis of the nature of the tasks. Always prioritize the important tasks. Also, never leave something for tomorrow.

3.   Organize Your Laundry

Laundry is a messy chore that every working mother has to deal with at least weekly. It’s always the boys’ room that looks like a dumping ground of clothes. It takes forever to separate the clean from the dirty ones.

To ave time, encourage organization by using laundry baskets:

  • Use Baskets

We suggest you place baskets in every room—two in each room, one for clean clothes, and one for dirty.  Ask your kids to put the clothes in the specific basket. This way, you know which ones need washing and which ones don’t.

4.   Be Disciplined

Most of the time, working moms have trouble locating their belongings. Sometimes, you misplace the key to your car. Or you might forget where you put your coat yesterday. All of this makes your work harder and more time-consuming.

A simple trick to avoid this confusion is to have a disciplined routine and dedicated place for every item. When you enter your home, always put your belonging in their designated place. That means keys in the usual basket, coat in the cupboard or coathanger, and documents on your desk.

5.   No Drinks/Eatables Area

Children always seem to drop their food on the bed, sofa, or carpet. Cleaning the bedsheet might not be that tough. But the sofa and carpet cleaning can be a tiresome task for working moms. Time is a luxury that the working moms don’t always have. It can take almost all day to wash and dry it off. Therefore, you should not allow drinks/eatables on beds, sofas, or the carpets.

6.   Good Kitchen Skills

We know that you are a great cook. Your family loves the taste of your dishes. But after every meal, you leave a pile of dishes in the kitchen. That is not a healthy and disciplined approach.

  • Untidy Kitchen and Health

A healthy meal is a big part of our growth. An untidy, dirty kitchen may become the cause of a disturbed stomach. Reportedly, it can lead to serious illness as well.

We suggest you develop a habit of washing the dishes after every meal. This way, you would not have a big pile to do at the end of the day. It will also give you peace of mind.

7.   Ready to Use Cleaning Supplies

Having a full stock of cleaning supplies is important to have a spotless house. Suppose you see a dirty spot on the carpet or the wall. And can’t seem to find cleaning supplies for it. You will put it off till tomorrow, then the day after tomorrow, etc.

The stains become stubborn with time. If you don’t wash it off right away, it may never easily go. Therefore, working moms should always have cleaning supplies stocked for ready use.

8.    Get Rid of Waste Items

We all find many extra things that are not in use anymore. It may be old clothes, furniture, or any other device in the household. It keeps going from one storeroom to another.

While you are organizing your stuff, separate the waste items. If you find no use for them, throw them out with the trash. This way, you will be able to save more space for useful things.

9.   Maintain a Clean Bathroom

Place a sponge in the bathroom for cleaning the mirror, tiles, and washbasin. Also, make it a habit to wipe the bathroom floor after every shower. Use anti-viral and anti-bacterial to sanitize the doorknobs and taps.

10.        Take a Break

You are an amazing working mom. You put in a lot of effort. It does not help anyone if you keep working without a break. So don’t be tough on yourself, and enjoy a break whenever you need it. This helps you to recharge your spirit to be the best.

Conclusion

Work-life balance may seem like an impossible goal for many working moms. It can be challenging, especially for new mothers. They may think that they would have to give up one of the things. But that should not be the case.

  • Ask for Help

It helps your personality when you take on new challenges. But know when it is too much for you. Maturity is when you know when to ask for help. If it feels like a burden, talk to your family, and chalk out a plan.

Remember, it doesn’t have to be your job only to keep your house spotless. It should be done as a team!

ALPERT JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE SUPPORTS HISTORIC VOTE BY SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PALM BEACH COUNTY ON DISMISSAL OF WILLIAM LATSON

ALPERT JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE SUPPORTS HISTORIC VOTE BY SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PALM BEACH COUNTY ON DISMISSAL OF WILLIAM LATSON

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – November 6, 2020 – Marc Hopin, CEO of Ferd and Gladys Alpert Jewish Family Service, was among the hundreds who addressed the School District of Palm Beach County, in person, before they made their unanimous 7-0 vote Monday to rescind the rehiring of former Spanish River High School Principal William Latson.

Marc Hopin, CEO of Ferd and Gladys Alpert Jewish Family Service

Both Hopin and Alpert JFS Board Chair Zelda Mason said they stand strongly in support of the school board’s decision not to reinstate Latson. Echoing what Hopin said to the school board Monday, he added, “There is no safe space for Holocaust denial and anti-Semitism in our school district, and this message needed to be heard by Latson, all school employees as well as all students and their families.”

Alpert Jewish Family Service provides care on a daily basis for hundreds of Holocaust Survivors living in Palm Beach County. Their goal in caring for the survivors, as Hopin said Monday night, is to help them live out their lives “in comfort and with dignity.” In representing so many Holocaust Survivors, Hopin could not sit on the sidelines on the matter of Latson because the former principal had been allowing deniers of the Holocaust to have their children opt out of teachings about the Holocaust, with Latson defending this by telling one parent, “I can’t say the Holocaust is a factual, historical event.”

Mason said, “Alpert JFS applauds the school board for revisiting their previous decision and reversing course in making the right decision now. It was evident from their comments that they took the time to understand why this issue was of such great concern to the community.”

Hopin said that Alpert JFS is looking into additional ways for the area’s Holocaust Survivors to be able to communicate their stories to the regional school systems in a way that can live on, even after the Survivors are no longer with us. “If the issues brought to light from this matter can help us find a way to turn Holocaust denial into Holocaust education- then we will all be better off. And not just for our current children in the schools, but also for the generations to come.”

ABOUT ALPERT JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE OF PALM BEACH COUNTY

The superb faculty is led by Claudia Cravey, of  Greenacres, who was instrumental in the launch of Ballet Florida, along with Galina Alvarez  of  Boynton Beach, former Principal dancer at National Ballet of Cuba.

Marquez, of Lake Worth, first met Hale, Founder and Artistic Director of the Original Ballet Florida, when she came to the United States in 2002 and entered the Ballet Florida as a dancer.

“It is with gratitude and our privilege to perform in tribute to Marie Hale, to honor her contributions to the arts and the greater community,” said Marquez. “She means so much to me. When I first came to Palm Beach, Ms. Hale was so welcoming and so very supportive of me…and this, I will never forget.”

A tribute to Marie Hale:
Ballet Arts Dance Company is pleased to announce the establishment of the Marie Hale Scholarship Award. This scholarship will go toward one or more dancers of the Company to support their long-term professional success.

Marquez remembers Hale fondly as the person to first give her a job in the United States. Hale believed in celebrating talent, creating a Company from various nationalities and ethnicities, to achieve great successes onstage. Her crowd-pleasing ballets and contemporary works continue to be cherished by the South Florida dance community.

As a friend and dancer of Marie Hale, Marquez has taken a similar approach to building both her School and Company. Ballet Arts is one of the premiere Ballet Companies in South Florida, with its younger dancers receiving vigorous training while it’s Company members perform the highway level of technical excellence.

The Marie Hale Scholarship Award is a tribute to the woman who gave so much to the dance world in Palm Beach County. We hope this award will continue her legacy for future generations of local ballet artists.
