One of my favorite hobbies is dancing. I am intrigued by all of its facets: from the steps, costumes, music, origin of the dance, and the style of the instructor. It has been 5 years for me, moving from a Beginner to an Intermediate Bronze level in Fred Astaire Wellington and I attribute my great success to the amazing instructors at the studio. Although I have mastered quite a few dances, I still work on learning to be more proficient in Salsa. Ana Esquerre is “Queen of Salsa” and demonstrates her wonderful prowess teaching Salsa Workshops and lessons at FAW. She is an instructor that gives her students more than steps; she creates passion and feeling while simultaneously encouraging her students. Behind every great dancer there is always a story. I was honored that Ana took some time away from her dancing to share her story in this interview. I assure you, you will be literally, “moved.”
Step by Step
AW: What or who inspired you to be a dancer?
A.E: When I was five years old, I went on a trip to Miami. I was going to see my dad with my mom and sister. A few days into our stay, we walked from our place to explore Bayside, a downtown area in Miami. There was a stage where we heard music playing in the midst. It turned out that they were actually having a live dance contest. My dad noticed that I couldn’t help myself and felt compelled to move to the music. Without any warning at all, he told me to go up on the stage for the dance contest. At first, I hesitated but then he PUSHED me to go up on that stage. Next thing I know, I WON the dance contest and I haven’t stopped dancing since that moment! So, I guess I owe it to my father for pushing my limits where he knew I was already a winner. I have carried this “winner” mentality into everything that I do.
AW: Where did you study dancing?
A.E: I studied dancing in various schools and teams; from professionals to school-oriented classes. I learned to dance Salsa from various platforms; There are quite a few to name. I owe my success to: Prestige Dance Company, Elite Dance Company, Sikan by Marisol Blanco and many more.
AW: How do you label yourself? Solely as a Salsa Instructor or do you delve into different genres of dance?
A.E: I’d like to think of myself as an instructor of many skills and assets. Not only do I take classes to improve myself and learn different cultures and dances, but also to help me educate others. I specialize in Salsa, Latin Rhythm and Afro-Cuban folkloric dances because it goes back to my roots.
AW: What is your role at Fred Astaire in Wellington?
A.E.: My role at Fred Astaire Wellington is: dance teacher and choreographer, specializing in Latin Rhythms.
AW: What is the “secret” to being a good salsa dancer?
A.E: The secret is to continue your training, stay consistent, and practice makes better NOT perfect. My advice is to explore other dances, and learn from ALL teachers, techniques and cultures. There is so much to learn!
AW: I have seen you perform before at our studio and know you perform in other locales with a Dance Troupe. Please tell us more about this endeavor.
A.E: I am part of a super dynamic girl group. We are under the direction of Melanie Castillo. We have been Dance colleagues since 2017 where I had the privilege of competing with her. Since then, we are part of this team, performing choreography all over for the world for dance events.
AW: How can people contact you and see more of your dancing?
A.E: I am on Instagram: anaesquerredance or …
Facebook: Ana Esquerre. I also teach every Monday night at 6:45pm at Fred Astaire Wellington. In addition, anyone can reach out to me for private lessons.
AW: What are some highlights of your dancing career? Any special memories to share?
A.E: I have so many memories that involve dancing, it really has been an exciting career for me. One memory that sticks out is from more recently: when I took the stage at the New York Salsa Congress for the first time to perform my solo. You never really know what it is going to be until you actually do it. It was quite the experience and exhilarating for me. There was a “welcoming” feeling from fellow performers and organizers of the event.
In retrospect, it really for me is about travelling to these beautiful places and seeing other people as passionate to learn as I am. I have met some of my greatest friends throughout my travels and it has been so fulfilling!
Last but not least, I have memories of competing; it is something as a dancer that at one point in your life you must compete. This “dance world” has a lot to offer and many great opportunities for us to succeed. We have to make sure we take advantage of these opportunities and competitions are a great way to familiarize myself with how the world works.
In the end, any memory of me performing at an event, teaching, dancing, or being with my students is fulfilling for me. It has helped create the teacher and dancer I am today and I continue to learn everyday from my students and colleagues as time goes by.
AW: What are some challenges you have faced as an instructor?
A.E: The greatest challenge is definitely teaching something that is going to be different for everyone. You have your beginners, intermediate and advanced students . The greatest challenge is making sure that everyone will be able to take something from the dancing and that is what I strive to do. It has helped me with my social skills. I never really had a problem but meeting with people has always been an interesting experience. But the “teacher” part can be a challenge. As a teacher you have to train yourself to feel comfortable and patient in different situations with your students and be able to ensure that whatever level they are at, you can still teach them.
AW: What are some things about Salsa that people DON’T know and SHOULD know?
A.E: A lot of people, students included don’t know that there are Salsa “Congresses.” There’s a whole community in South Florida that is dedicated to learning Salsa and Bachata and every night of the week people go to practice their steps. It is really beautiful and admirable how the dance community keeps people going. There’s so many genres of dance that people don’t know about: Fusion, Afro-Cuban, Iziko. People who just start taking dance lessons usually don’t know about this at all. The people in these groups are all over the world from 1,000 people to more than 4,000 people.
AW: Many people associate Salsa with the Hispanic/Latino Community solely in the United States. Would you say that it has spread beyond these parameters and communities?
A.E: Salsa dancing is no longer just being taught and practiced in the United States within the Hispanic /Latino Community. In fact, it has become popular globally in places such as: Japan, China, Amsterdam, Norway, and Greece. I have a really good friend from Central America that lives in Norway and he has a school out there. Salsa is universal. Another thing that I love is you get to meet up with and experience so many different cultures: Chinese, Caribbean, Japanese, Nordic, etc.
AW: What are your future plans for Dance?
A.E. : My plans for the future include getting more “known” here in West Palm Beach, having my own studio and forming my own team. I am making my own videos and those of my students and getting a lot of help along the way. My goal is to work with various studios to collaborate with their students and grow my own dance community.
Just Dance… Ana Esquerre is not just a phenomenal dance instructor and choreographer but she is a promoter of culture, passion and education. At the beginning of our interview Ana spoke of her dad’s great influence in promoting her self-confidence and instilling in her the motivation she needed to become a “winner.” When I have taken a group class with her or watched her work with other students, I can see that she has definitely followed her father’s footsteps and has carried on the “legacy” of making others feel proud and confident. I hope that one day you will get to take a class with Ana, whether it be a group or a private lesson because she will not just teach you the dance, but will let you experience it through her growing passion for Salsa and Latin rhythm.

Award-Winning One-Man Show Explores the Controversy of ‘Yellowface’ Casting
(Delray Beach, FL – November 20, 2024) Marjorie Waldo, President & CEO of Arts Garage, today confirmed that the nonprofit organization is presenting an award-winning, one-man show exploring the controversial, cringe-worthy subject of “yellowface” casting – which is also the topic and title of one of the hottest shows now running on Broadway. It is the term used to describe when white actors are cast in Asian roles and is comparable to the much-maligned minstrelsy of yesteryear.
“Perhaps one of the most egregious examples of yellowface casting is the role Mickey Rooney played in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s and that is the subject of this fascinating, thought-provoking production coming to Arts Garage,” says Waldo.
December 15 (Sunday) at 7 pm
MR. YUNIOSHI
Written, Directed and Performed by
J. Elijah Cho as Mickey Rooney
I. Y. Yunioshi is the fictional role played by Mickey Rooney in Blake Edwards’s 1961 comedy film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which was adapted from the 1958 novella by Truman Capote—a Japanese character The New York Times described as “bucktoothed, myopic (and) broadly exotic.” This insulting characterization raises a lot of questions:
+ Should actors really have the opportunity to play any role?
+ Could there ever have been a “right” way for Rooney to play it?
+ And what compels an actor to play a character that they probably shouldn’t be playing?
Asian-American writer/performer J. Elijah Cho attempts to explore these topics and more in this production, which received the award for Best Solo Show at the 2019 Hollywood Fringe Festival. The writer/actor from Los Angeles and Florida, previously appeared as Wonderboy in two seasons of the AMC series Halt & Catch Fire and has performed with such respected theatre companies as Jobsite, Stageworks, Hat Trick, and Tampa Rep.
Tickets: $30
How to Purchase Tickets:
Tickets for MR. YUNIOSHI are available by calling Arts Garage at 561.450.6357 or by going online to www.ArtsGarage.org.

Palm Beach, Florida – The November 8th, Clinics Can Help Cribs for Kids Luncheon was a rousing success, helping the organization to raise just under $100,000 to provide safe sleeping environments for Palm Beach County’s most precious residents. The event, which took place at The Sailfish Club in Palm Beach, was dedicated to promoting equality and access for all while raising vital funding to prevent the occurrence of S.I.D.S.
“When we hear the staggering number of 2,000 deaths each year due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) we know, at our core, that this is unacceptable,” shares Clinics Can Help CEO Owen O’Neill. “A safe sleeping environment is the very simple answer to reducing this number and we’ve made it a part of our mission to step in to help those in need.”
The event not only featured a magical luncheon but an exclusive shopping experience prior to sitting for attendees to shop one-of-a-kind goods, exotic offerings and an incredible silent auction.
Once seated, emcee Jay Cashmere welcomed guests before welcoming US Representative Lois Frankel who shared a bit about the work she is doing to create access. The remarkable Nancy Brinker served as keynote speaker, who ignited and inspired the room through talk of her work, the impact and movement she created, and how her work aligns with the mission and work of Clinics Can Help in bringing equality in healthcare to all regardless of their situation. Brinker encouraged guests to do their part and to do what they can to enact change for the betterment of friends and neighbors in need.
The hundreds of thousands of dollars raised through the event will stay local and help the organization not only provide cribs but support the organization’s work. To date, Clinics Can Help has aided more than 26,000 children and adults with an astonishing $14,000,000 worth of medical equipment and life-saving supplies. The organization works to increase access to health equity leading to bright futures.

West Palm Beach, Fla.– Palm Health Foundation’s Scholarship Reception on November 2, 2024, brought together nursing and behavioral health scholars with their donors for an inspiring evening at the stunning Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens (ANSG) in West Palm Beach, FL. Over 190 guests attended the event to celebrate 92 scholarship recipients, the largest group of scholars in the history of the foundation due to a generous gift from Southeast Florida Behavioral Health Network (SEFBHN). Frances Fisher generously underwrote the reception at ANSG where she serves as chairwoman.
ANSG’s natural gardens and monumental sculptures served as the perfect setting for scholars and their donors to meet each other, all expressing gratitude. Guests and donors thanked the scholars for their dedication to the healthcare workforce of South Florida, and scholars thanked donors for their generosity that enabled them to continue their education.
“The scholarship recipients here tonight are not only the future of South Florida’s healthcare system, but also the heart and soul of our community,” said Fisher. “I am inspired by their dedication, and I am grateful to our donors who are helping to shape a brighter, healthier future for all.”
The $530,000 awarded in needs-based scholarship funds will help address significant shortages in the nursing and behavioral health care workforce. Donor funding will also help humanize health by advancing the careers of healthcare professionals with lived experience and cultural competencies to serve South Florida’s diverse population, a need echoed by Abigail Goodwin, executive vice president of Palm Health Foundation, in her address to scholars.
“Your ability to bridge languages and cultures is critical to providing quality care for our dynamic South Florida communities, making our entire region healthier and stronger,” Goodwin said. “You are here today because you’ve demonstrated dedication, perseverance, and a true desire to serve your neighbors. Palm Health Foundation is proud to support, honor, and uplift you as you continue your journey.”
Goodwin closed the event by announcing another gratitude opportunity to donors. From December 1, 2024, to January 31, 2025, Palm Health Foundation is matching every donation to The Nursing Advancement Fund and all nursing scholarship funds—dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000. Palm Health Foundation nursing scholarships support students with financial need in LPN, undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate programs in Palm Beach County.
“Through our charitable funds and with the collaboration of donors, residents, and partners, we are building a culture of health for all in our community,” said Dr. Marsha Fishbane, chair of the Palm Health Foundation Board of Trustees.
Notable attendees at the event included: Frances Fisher, PHF Trustee and scholarship fund holder; Dr. Marsha Fishbane, Palm Health Foundation chair, and trustees Dr. Naelys Luna, Barbara James, Clovis Moodie, and Nathan Nason; scholarship fund holders Debra Coffman Howe, Ann Berner, Dr. Alina Alonso, Denise Bober, and Carrie Browne and Donald Smith-Browne; and Tim Snow, president of George Snow Scholarship Fund.

Forest Bathing, also known as “Nature Therapy,” is an immersive experience in nature that gives you an opportunity to reset your outlook on life and have an encounter with the nature in a way that you have never experienced before. It is a sensory practice that takes you away from your phone, computer and social media and back to what your body yearns for…..a connection with nature. A sense of peace. A sense of relaxation. A sense of being in the present moment. It provides the perfect time to become a human “be” ing instead of a human “do” ing! During a Forest Bathing experience, you will be invited to slow down and reconnect with nature’s perfect balance using your senses to see the sunlight playing through the leaves, smell the flowers, and feel and hear the gentle wind whispering to you to return to your native roots and discover your deeper self. Your nature encounter concludes with a tea ceremony to connect with other like-minded nature lovers. Forest Bathing has been scientifically proven to boost immune strength, lift depression, reduce stress, and improve sleep. But beyond these physiological changes, this contemplative experience will show you how important it is for your well-being to take time in nature daily!

Steve Mayans, WPBLF Board Chair; Dianne Bernstein WPBLF Immediate-Past Board Chair and first recipient of the WPBLF Benjamin Franklin Award for Excellence; Dean Dimke, WPBLF CEO
WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (November 14, 2024) – The Library Foundation’s inaugural Benjamin Franklin Award for Excellence was presented to Dianne Bernstein at the annual Food for Thought Dinner. The Foundation’s premier fundraising event was held Saturday, November 2, 2024, at The Beach Club, Palm Beach.
The Chair of the Board of Directors, Steven Mayans, shared that “usually, a grateful organization bestows upon a singular person its most prestigious award. Because we did not yet have such an award, the Board of Directors created the Benjamin Franklin Award of Excellence, allowing us to publicly recognize an exceptional individual who makes a significant contribution towards advancing the mission of the WPB Library Foundation. That person is Dianne Bernstein.”
“Dianne Bernstein was selected as the first recipient of this esteemed award because of her long-time service as a career educator, library enthusiast, and nonprofit leader,” CEO Dean Dimke explained.
In her remarks in accepting the award, Bernstein said, “My life’s focus has been a shared love of education and literacy, and dedication to the programs the West Palm Beach Library Foundation offers to the community through the Mandel Public Library.”
Dianne taught high school English for 28 years to disadvantaged students. She served as a board member of the Library of Philadelphia and a Trustee of its Foundation; while in Manalapan, she founded a monthly lecture series; and in West Palm Beach, she was a library volunteer, board member and is the immediate-past Board chair. She established the foundation’s Giving Society and Food for Thought, the premier fundraising event, as well as the concept for the Yacht Cruise and Dream Auction, our second largest fundraiser.
Why the Benjamin Franklin namesake? He is the father of the modern public library. He was also one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and among the most prominent intellectuals of his time. It is a telling historical fact – that Benjamin Franklin was the only person to have signed all three of the most important documents of our country’s founding – the Declaration of Independence in 1776; the Treaty of Paris in 1783; and the United States Constitution in 1787. “The custom-designed Benjamin Franklin Award for Excellence is engraved with Franklin’s quote of “Well done is better than well said,” stated Dimke. Those words aptly fit Dianne Bernstein.
About the West Palm Beach Library Foundation The West Palm Beach Library Foundation raises funds for the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach to provide free quality programs, services, and resources that enrich and strengthen its diverse community. The Foundation hopes to create an inspired community where children excel, and adults thrive. Gifts to the Foundation support popular library programs including afterschool homework centers, summer learning programs, reading programs, teen college prep, job readiness, and adult programs in art, technology, education, culture, and entertainment.
The Partnership Will Ensure Seniors Are Not Forgotten This Holiday Season
West Palm Beach, FL (11/18/24) —This holiday season, Alzheimer’s Community Care has partnered with Kelly Merbler for The Senior Significance Project. Kelly Merbler is a Leadership Development Consultant, Keynote Speaker and Founder of the Kelly Merbler Company. The Kelly Merbler Company is a leadership consulting firm specializing in the development of leaders and creating strengths-based cultures for companies of all sizes.
Launched in 2014, Kelly Merbler started The Senior Significance Project in memory of her mother’s legacy. As part of her broader mission to keep seniors as a significant part of life and give back, The Senior Significance Project brings community members together to donate gifts and spend time with Alzheimer’s patients and nursing home residents across Florida during the holiday season.
“In 2013, I lost my mother to her battle with Dementia. I was so moved by her experience and seeing how many nursing home residents spend holidays and birthdays alone, I vowed to find a way to make an impact in seniors’ lives. The Senior Significance Project is very near and dear to my heart because it is one way I’m able to honor my mother’s legacy and continue making a difference,” said Kelly Merbler. “They may not know who we are, but they know we’re there and that we care. Our motto for this project is just because they can’t remember doesn’t mean they should be forgotten.”
This year, Alzheimer’s Community Care is a beneficiary of the project. On Dec. 13th, a team of volunteers will visit Alzheimer’s Community Care’s Wellington Specialized Day Center to share gifts and spend quality time with patients.
“We could not be more thrilled to partner with Kelly Merbler again for The Senior Significance Project,” said Alzheimer’s Community Care President and CEO David Franklin. “It’s incredible to see how a small act of kindness can bring so much joy to our patients. Nothing compares to seeing our patients’ faces light up when they see the volunteers. We are so thankful for Kelly and her dedicated team this holiday season.”
