Calling All PBC Nonprofits: Quantum Foundation Taking Grant Applications for Share of $1 million!

Quantum Foundation is now accepting applications for grassroots nonprofits in Palm Beach County to receive their share of $1 million! This year marks the 9th annual Quantum in the Community initiative to help local nonprofits working toward a healthier Palm Beach County by meeting the basic needs of residents through food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and more.

“Grassroots organizations are a big indicator of health in our county,” said Eric Kelly, president of Quantum Foundation. “We support nonprofits providing whole-health initiatives as our mission is to provide better community engagement, improved access to healthcare, and stronger connections within the system through navigation help. These organizations providing the basic needs are the cornerstone to success, which is why we’ve decided to make sure these incredible groups get the funding they need. To celebrate more than 20 years of impacting the health of our local residents, we wanted to make this event count with the special $1 million budget to meet the growing needs of Palm Beach County.”

Strict criteria are set up for those nonprofits applying:
• Organization must be registered as a 501c3.
• Organization must have been working in Palm Beach County for at least six months.
• Annual operating budget may not exceed $500,000.
• Organization must provide basic needs like food, clothing, shelter, utilities and transportation to the county’s most vulnerable residents.

A committee of Quantum staff and board members will carefully consider each application. The selected organizations will receive up to $25,000 of the $1 million total. To learn more, visit the Quantum Foundation website at www.quantumfnd.org/. All applications must be submitted using the foundation’s online system by the August 2 deadline. Funding announcements will be made on November 13 during a celebratory breakfast ceremony.

Quantum Foundation’s mission is to fund initiatives that improve the health of Palm Beach County residents. In 1998, Quantum Foundation marked its rookie year as one of Palm Beach County’s newest and largest philanthropic organizations with an impressive $7.6 million granted to more than 40 Palm Beach County projects. Twenty years later, with assets of approximately $150 million, the organization’s focus remains on keeping Palm Beach County healthy. Their 20 years’ worth of awards totals more than $130 million and has impacted hundreds of local nonprofit organizations. Every dollar the foundation grants continues to stay in the county to benefit local communities. For additional information, visit www.quantumfnd.org or call 561.832.7497.

Free HIV and Hepatitis C Testing Throughout Palm Beach County

FoundCare, Inc., a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center, is offering free HIV and hepatitis C testing at multiple locations throughout Palm Beach County. Trained staff members will be conducting the free tests from June 23 to the 29 to coincide with National HIV Testing Day, which is observed annually on June 27.

The Centers for Disease Control started National HIV Testing Day as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of HIV testing and early diagnosis. Testing ensures people know their status and can get linked to appropriate resources, including those offered by FoundCare, such as medical appointments and prescriptions, behavioral health services, and case management.

During the week of June 23, FoundCare’s expanded testing sites across the county will offer free and confidential testing to anyone aged 13 or older. Trained staff members will offer saliva tests and finger-stick blood tests, both of which show results in 20 minutes. Testing services do not require an appointment; however, appointments are available. Safer sex resources and educational brochures will also be available at the testing locations.

According to the CDC, one in seven people with HIV in the U.S. do not know they have it. “Early detection is key,” said Dr. Leslie Diaz, Infectious Disease Specialist at FoundCare. “It’s important to know your status, especially with infectious diseases in the headlines lately. We are proud to provide this service to reach as many people as possible to further our mission to fulfil unmet healthcare and social service needs of individuals and families in Palm Beach County.”

Healthcare professionals are urging a specific section of the population get tested for Hepatitis C. “Baby Boomers born between 1945 and 1965 should get tested for hepatitis C as they are at a higher risk of contracting the disease,” said Dr. Stella Medina, Infectious Disease physician at FoundCare. “Early detection is key as there is not a vaccine for hepatitis C.”

“While we always offer free HIV testing at FoundCare’s offices in West Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, and Belle Glade, we are happy to highlight this important awareness week with expanded locations, hours and the HCV test too,” continued Dr. Diaz.

Science Center Launches Program Helping Young Scientists in Palm Beach, Broward Counties

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is empowering teachers to show young children in Palm Beach and Broward Counties that learning Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math is fun, even at such a young age.

Two funders have provided the means necessary to start the program “Pint Size Science: Growing up with STEAM.” The goal of the program is to implement Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math learning into regular curriculum for children ages 3-5 years old.

Science Center educators will train staff from childcare centers throughout the year. The training will engage teachers by giving them the knowledge and tools necessary to foster learning. Pint Size Science begins with intense training of the chosen preschool teachers with day-long workshops followed by classroom visits throughout the year which include story time, a thematic science activity, and free play.

“It’s never too early to introduce young children to art and science,” said Kate Arrizza, CEO of the Science Center. “By making sure students are exposed to these subjects at an early age through open-ended questions, hands-on experiences and experimentation, we are helping them develop a love of learning as well as creating important and necessary connections to the science learning process. Studies have shown that effective early childhood education makes a sizable impact on achievement, grade retention, special education, high school graduation and socialization”

The program will also give family members the chance to be involved through Family Fun Packs with a lunch kit, watercolor paint set, a magnifying glass, a collection box and play dough. “By involving parents and guardians in the educational process, Pint Size Science capitalizes on the concept of getting the whole family on board to make it that much more fun,” Arrizza said.

The Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation has given $55,000 to fund the program in Palm Beach County. A.D. Henderson Foundation has provided $50,000 to fund the program in Broward County. The funding will serve about 75 teachers and staff at 10 childcare centers in Palm Beach County covering nearly 350 children ages 3-5 years old. The Broward grant will reach 400 students and 100 teachers in that county.

Palm Beach State College is partnering in this project.

The mission of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is to “open every mind to science” and in addition to its fresh and saltwater aquarium and new backyard Science Trail, the indoor/outdoor venue features more than 100 hands-on educational exhibits, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall, Pre-K focused “Discovery Center,” an interactive Everglades exhibit and the 18-hole Conservation Course – an outdoor putting course with science-focused education stations. The newest addition includes a $2.5 million permanent exhibit, “Journey Through the Human Brain” and features the most advanced neuroscience research and technology in the world. Rainforest Adventure runs through September 4th.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North in West Palm Beach and is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Admission is $17.95 for adults $15.95 for seniors, $13.95 for kids ages 3-12 and free for kids under 3. Planetarium shows and mini golf are not included in general admission pricing.

Wellington Resident Mike May Addresses Physical Inactivity

WELLINGTON RESIDENT ADDRESSES PHYSICAL INACTIVITY ISSUE TO WELLINGTON ROTARY – TODAY!

WELLINGTON, FLORIDA – June 13, 2019 – Sitting is the new smoking……and Exercise is medicine.  Those are two of the many ‘big-picture’ messages that Wellington resident and PHIT America director of communications Mike May will share today with the Wellington Rotary, which meets at noon at The Wanderers Club in Wellington.  May is expected to speak at 12:15 for roughly 15 minutes.  During May’s luncheon presentation, he will reveal the magnitude of physical inactivity in the U.S. and the downsides of the status quo:

Facts on Physical Inactivity in the U.S.:

— 82 million Americans are classified as physically inactive. (Source:  Physical Activity Council)

— Less than 10% of U.S. children (age 6-17) are physically active to healthy standards. (Source: CDC)

— U.S. children rank 47th in global fitness. (Source:  British Journal of Sports Medicine)

— The issue is so severe that the U.S. Army is currently having difficulty recruiting troops physically fit enough to make it through boot camp (Source:  U.S. Army)

The issue of physical inactivity and the work of PHIT America has received attention by some news outlets in Palm Beach County in recent months:

PHIT America is responding to the physical inactivity issue by raising funds from the private sector in order to distribute PHIT America GO! Grants to P.E. programs in elementary schools around the U.S.

Founded in January 2013, PHIT America is a non-profit campaign focused on overcoming the severe ramifications of the ‘Inactivity Pandemic’ through four strategic approaches – education, supporting school-based activity programs, a national event and advocating – which will get Americans, especially our youth, more active, fit and healthy.   Companies or individuals interested in more information about PHIT America’s fight to reverse the ‘Inactivity Pandemic’ should access www.PHITAmerica.org.
