Susan G. Komen South Florida Race for the Cure® and Macy’s Team Up to “Make Good Cents”

Palm Beach and Martin Counties, Fla.– In addition to serving as a generous corporate donor and offering participants several pre-event packet pick-up locations at their area stores, Macy’s has created a unique way that local shoppers can support the 28th annual Susan G. Komen South Florida Race for the Cure with every purchase.

From January 19, 2019 through race day, Saturday, January 26, 2019, the store will offer customers at Macy’s Boynton Beach, Macy’s Boca Town Center, Macy’s Jensen Beach, Macy’s The Gardens Mall, and Macy’s in The Mall at Wellington Green the opportunity to voluntarily round their purchases up to the nearest dollar as part of its “Make Good Cents” campaign. The ask will be made via the pin pad at every register at participating stores and will list Susan G. Komen Florida as the beneficiary on the purchase receipt.

“Macy’s is a proud supporter of Susan G. Komen. By encouraging customers to shop for a cause in our local stores, our customers and colleagues can make a real difference in support of Susan G. Komen’s mission,” said Geoff Lieberman, vice President store manager of Macy’s Jensen Beach.

Funds raised through Macy’s “Make Good Cents” program and the race itself will support Susan G. Komen’s Bold Goal to reduce the nation’s 40,000 breast cancer deaths by 50 percent by 2026. Last year, over 11,500 attendees raised $1.3 million. Downtown West Palm Beach is already turning pink with excitement as 2019 participants prepare to celebrate breast cancer survivors and remember others who have lost their lives. Teams of runners, walkers and individuals of all ages will enjoy activities for the entire family on January 26, including a Kids Zone with giant yard games, tots and kids’ fun and two Palm Beach Zoo pink flamingos.

“We grateful to Macy’s for their ongoing support in our community, which empowers us to meet our goals of improving timely access to quality breast cancer care for low-income and uninsured women, and other vulnerable populations,” says Kate Watt, Komen Florida executive director.

Macy’s has been a long-time supporter of the Susan G. Komen South Florida Race for the Cure. On race day, participants will enjoy visiting their tent and the Macy’s Fashion Truck mobile pop-up shop. Lawyers Abuse Alcohol at Twice the National Rate – Hanley Foundation to Host Two Seminars (with Credits) on Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession

HANLEY FOUNDATION TO HOST TWO “LUNCH & LEARN” SEMINARS TO EDUCATE ATTORNEYS ON SUBSTANCE ABUSE IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION, WITH ETHICS CREDITS PROVIDED

Addressing and Combating Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession seminars at FAU Jupiter and FAU Boca, which provide Continuing Legal Education Credit Hours for Ethics and Substance Abuse

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) – Hanley Foundation, a statewide leader in substance use disorder education, will host two insightful “Lunch & Learn” seminars for legal professionals entitled Addressing and Combating Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession on Friday, February 1, 2019 and Monday, February 4, 2019. Both seminars are from Noon-4 p.m., include lunch and provide four Continuing Legal Education credits per session, including two ethics credits.

Research shows that 18-20 percent of attorneys abuse alcohol or other substances – double the rate of the general population. Of those lawyers facing disciplinary actions, 25 percent are found to be abusing drugs or alcohol and suffering from a mental disorder.

“As we fight the current opioid crisis and other forms of addiction on all fronts, we especially want to provide assistance to particularly vulnerable populations,” said Jan Cairnes, CEO of Hanley Foundation. “According to the American Bar Association, because many lawyers and judges are overachievers who carry an enormous workload, the tendency to ‘escape’ from daily problems through the use of drugs and alcohol is prevalent in the legal community.”

The Feb. 1 seminar will be held at Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter campus and the Feb. 4 seminar will be held at FAU’s Tech Runway on the Boca Raton campus. Each event will feature four speakers: D. Culver ‘Skip’ Smith III, P.A., Michael J. Pike, Molly J. Paris and Kevin Vance. They will focus their presentations on substance abuse in the legal profession and its ethical implications.

“We are pleased to host the Addressing and Combating Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession seminars, given by highly-experienced members of our legal community,” said Cairnes. “Part of our mission is to educate key populations and advocate for quality treatment. These timely sessions will provide insight to the prevalence of substance abuse in the legal profession and the implications from ethical and business standpoints and serve as a stepping stone to additional resources.”

The event presentations are:

  • D. Culver ‘Skip’ Smith III, P.A. – The Pink Elephant in the Room: Prevalence of Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession, Impact and Consequences and Addressing it in the Workplace
  • Michael J. Pike, Managing Partner, Pike & Lustig, LLP – Lawyers, Alcohol and its Hidden Agenda in the Professional World
  • Molly J. Paris, Esq., Assistant Director, Florida Lawyers Assistance – Ethical Implications of Impairment in the Workforce
  • Kevin Vance, Partner, Duane Morris, LLP – Ethical Implications of Impairment in the Employment Setting

Hanley Foundation, established more than 30 years ago by Mary Jane and Jack Hanley, is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to give hope to individuals, families and communities affected by substance use disorders. The Foundation provides programming and grant support throughout Florida for advocacy, prevention, education and access to quality addiction treatment. The organization’s prevention programming is available to schools, churches and community groups through grant funding provided by the Florida Department of Children and Families, office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health.

Attending either of the Addressing and Combating Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession seminars will count towards 2 CLE ethics credits and 2 CLE substance abuse credits.

Tickets are $75 per person and include lunch, with limited seating available. To purchase tickets or for more information, please visit hanleyfoundation.org/lunch-and-learn or call 561-268-2355. Advance reservations required.

Olivia Knowles’s Cocoa Stand raises $2,700 in 2 hours for Grandma’s Place

Eight-year-old Olivia Knowles recently donated $2,700 to Grandma’s Place, which was the money she raised selling hot cocoa at her hot cocoa stand with help from her friends on Dec. 21.  This is her third year doing this. The first year, she raised $163 the second year $826 for a grand total of $3,689!

Grandma’s Place is an emergency shelter in Palm Beach County for abused and neglected kids. About 35 percent of its funding is through fundraising.  Roxanne Jacobs, the Executive Director, said, “Olivia is just absolutely phenomenal. We are amazed at what she can accomplish. If I could clone her, we would not have any financial problems here.  Her donation will go to good use. We will take the kids to the movies or take them out to do something special because I know that she wants to make sure that her donation makes a difference,”

Olivia made a video to share with the community about her one night hot cocoa sale.  “We put out fliers, we put it on Facebook and we did all sorts of stuff,” said Olivia, “I just wanted to make sure that the kids feel safe and loved.”  Olivia is humble and said she could not have done it without the help of her friends. She said they all had jobs to do… from selling cocoa to selling sweets to just having fun.   More good news is that she plans to do her hot cocoa stand again in December of 2019.
