Community Partners of South Florida Hosts First Annual Housing Fair

West Palm Beach, Fla. – As Palm Beach County continues to struggle with the supply of workforce housing for professions such as teachers, nurses, firefighters, and other workers whose wages do not keep pace with home price appreciation, Community Partners of South Florida is deploying a comprehensive set of solutions, services and funding to make home ownership possible.

Since 1995, Community Partners has helped over 1,200 people realize home ownership, creating upward economic mobility and self-sustaining families and neighborhoods in the process.  Coaching, financial counseling, purchasing guidance and first-time buyer loans are provided to offer a hand up, not a hand out, on the pathway to homeownership for the workforce in the 80%-120% of Area Median Incomes ($60,000-$90,000 household income per year).

“Community Partners is making it possible for our local workforce to become homeowners, strengthen their financial stability, and contribute to our economy—all measures of strong, sustainable families and communities,” said Scott Hansel, CEO of CommunityPartners.  “It is one of the many ways our organization is driving comprehensive community development through housing and financial empowerment, child and family mental health services and other community services to create systemic change.”

New and noteworthy services and programs helping to combat the problem include:

  • First-time home buyer down payment assistance.  Community Partners is the local affiliate for NeighborWorks® America, which manages The Wells Fargo NeighborhoodLIFT® Program to deliver down payment assistance and financial education to homebuyers.  Community Partners is currently prepared to provide 80 loans of $5,000 each to first-time home-buyers.
  • Providing tools for homeownership in Riviera Beach.  Community Partners has partnered with the Riviera Beach CommunityRedevelopment Organization to create a “Homebuyers Club.”  The six-month training program from February-June 2019 provides home-buyer education, a down payment savings and $2,000 matching program, and is inspiring civic engagement through community ownership.

Additionally, Community Partners hosted a housing fair, in partnership with the Riviera Beach Community Redevelopment Organization, on March 9, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Riviera Beach Marina. Agencies, banks, developers and realtors were on hand to offer guidance on pathways to home ownership, credit counseling, qualifying for a home loan or re-financing, and guidance on tax filing.  The first fifteen people that came through the door received a free credit report and were entered in to a raffle for $1,000 toward closing costs.

“Our residents want to buy a home in their community, and we want them to have the opportunity to be proud home owners and become more civically engaged,” said Annetta Jenkins, Director of Neighborhood Services for the Riviera Beach CRA.  “There is no other organization in our community that provides the comprehensive services and guidance offered by Community Partners to make the dream of owning a home a reality.”

Community Partners is a nonprofit organization serving all of Palm Beach County. To support growth in the community, the organization takes a neighborhood-by-neighborhood approach in areas where opportunities for upward economic mobility are greatest.  The “Homebuyers Club” and Housing Fair, developed in partnership with the Riviera Beach CRA, is one example of this work.

Arbor Day Celebration!

Free Trees with Community Greening at Grandview Public Market April 27th at 4:00pm outside on the Loading Dock

In partnership with Community Greening, a non-profit organization committed to improving our environment, Grandview Public Market will host a FREE tree giveaway.  In an on going effort to bring life and beauty to our community 100 native Florida trees will be given away on a first come first serve basis.

Arbor Day first started in the United States in 1872 and was made popular by Theodore Roosevelt in 1907 when he issued an “Arbor Day Proclamation to the school children of the United States”.  Today Arbor Day has become a beloved community event in which children and adults are encouraged to plant trees to help conserve our forests. With urban development trees have become even more vital to our health, environment, and quality of life.

This is the second Arbor Day celebration between Grandview Public and Community Greening and third occurrence since Grandview opened last year. The event has been welcomed by the community with great enthusiasm with hundreds of trees and excited families bringing home their very own native Florida tree.

About Grandview Public Market

Grandview Public Market is managed by NBH Grandview Public Management, LLC.

Preventing Heartworm Disease

Heartworm disease or dirofilariasis is caused by worms causing heart and lung disease and is potentially fatal. The disease can affect dogs and cats. Dogs are the natural host for heartworms, however cats can also become infected and develop heartworm associated respiratory disease. Animals are infected with the disease most commonly through the mosquito’s bite.

PREVENTION is the best treatment! Preventive treatments include: oral medications, topical applications, and now bi- annual injections. Anzer Animal Hospital will customize a treatment plan best suited for you and your pet. As part of your pet’s annual physical examination it is recommended a blood test to monitor for exposure, and to ensure that preventive measures are working.

All dogs should be tested annually for heartworm infection, and this can usually be done during a routine visit for preventive care. Following are guidelines on testing and timing:

  • Puppies under 7 months of age can be started on heartworm prevention without a heartworm test (it takes at least 6 months for a dog to test positive after it has been infected), but should be tested 6 months after your initial visit, tested again 6 months later and yearly after that to ensure they are heartworm-free.
  • Adult dogs over 7 months of age and previously not on a preventive need to be tested prior to starting heartworm prevention.  They, too, need to be tested 6 months and 12 months later and annually after that.
  • You need to consult your veterinarian, and immediately re-start your dog on monthly preventive—then retest your dog 6 months later. The reason for re-testing is that heartworms must be approximately 7 months old before the infection can be diagnosed.

Heartworm infection in cats is harder to detect than in dogs, because cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms. Because there is no approved treatment for heartworm infection in cats, prevention is critical.

Signs of Heartworm disease

Signs of heartworm disease may include a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite, and weight loss. Without prompt surgical removal of the heartworm blockage, few dogs survive.

In cats, symptoms may include coughing, asthma-like attacks, periodic vomiting, lack of appetite, or weight loss. Occasionally an affected cat may have difficulty walking, experience fainting or seizures, or suffer from fluid accumulation in the abdomen. Unfortunately, the first sign in some cases is sudden collapse of the cat, or sudden death.
