Spirits of the Dead

Spirits of the Dead

By Edgar Allen Poe

I

Thy soul shall find itself alone
’Mid dark thoughts of the gray tombstone—
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy.

       II

Be silent in that solitude,
   Which is not loneliness—for then
The spirits of the dead who stood
In life before thee are again
In death around thee—and their will
Shall overshadow thee: be still.

       III

The night, tho’ clear, shall frown—
And the stars shall look not down
From their high thrones in the heaven,
With light like Hope to mortals given—
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever.

       IV

Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish,
Now are visions ne’er to vanish;
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more—like dew-drop from the grass.

       V

The breeze—the breath of God—is still—
And the mist upon the hill,
Shadowy—shadowy—yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token—
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries!

ENGLAND’S ST. ENODOC GOLF CLUB:  IT’S A MEMORY MAKER

ENGLAND’S ST. ENODOC GOLF CLUB:  IT’S A MEMORY MAKER

By Mike May

If you travel just over four hours west of London, England, you’ll find one of the world’s true, traditional seaside links golf courses — the St. Enodoc Golf Club near Padstow in Cornwall.  This golf course has all the characteristics of a true, traditional seaside links golf course – firm, consistent greens; undulating fairways; tight, uneven fairway lies; nasty bunkers; a few blind shots; and some dynamic, memorable, and jaw-dropping seaside views of the Camel Estuary and the north Atlantic Ocean.

In addition to being a great destination in itself, St. Enodoc is one of a group of six championship links courses at five golf clubs located in the three counties in the southwest of England:  Cornwall, Devon, and Somerset.  The six premier championship links are Trevose and St. Enodoc in Cornwall; Royal North Devon, Saunton East and Saunton West in Devon; and Burnham & Berrow in Somerset.  These six courses, clustered along the northern coast of the southwest of England, overlook the spectacular North Atlantic Ocean.

At St. Enodoc, there’s rarely an issue with getting a tee time since there are two courses:  the Church course, opened in 1907, which was designed by James Braid and the shorter Holywell course, which provides a typical links terrain with less daunting shots.

The Church course gets its name from the 11th Century St. Enodoc Church which sits in the middle of the course alongside the 11th fairway.  When playing the Church course, holes 10-14 are played in the general vicinity of this historic Norman structure.

One of the biggest complements that can be bestowed on St. Enodoc – which features a new tagline:  Where Golf Meets the Atlantic — is that many professional golfers are now coming to the Church course to get ready for the Open Championship each July.  And, one of those players, over the years, was five-time Open champion Tom Watson.

“It (the Church course) is a wonderful golf course,” says Watson.  “It has lots of variety and beautiful views everywhere you look.  It’s a great place to play golf.”

Watson, who likes the hilly nature of St. Enodoc, is not alone in his praise for Braid’s golfing masterpiece.

“It’s got the wow factor,” notes Simon Greatorex, general manager, St. Enodoc Golf Club.  “It’s a golf club that really stirs the soul.”

Kudos to Braid whose design of St. Enodoc remains relevant to this day.

“He (Braid) put a great golf course in a limited space,” notes Scott Gibson, course manager at St. Enodoc.

One of Braid’s design features which remains in play is the Himalaya bunker on the 6th hole.  It is big, steep, and filled with lots of sand.  Avoid that hazard at all costs!

In 2017, efforts were implemented to make a great course even better.  For instance, the tee complexes on the 1st, 5th, and 10th holes were re-leveled and expanded in size, in order to protect them during the busy summer season.  In addition, the invasive and overgrown area that ran the length of the 10th hole has been removed to enhance visibility when playing the hole.  Also, the stream that sites next to the 10th green has been widened, which adds charm to the hole, which is St. Enodoc’s Signature Hole.

When you reach the 18th tee of the Church course, pause and admire the view before striking your tee shot.  Without a doubt, Braid saved the best view at St. Enodoc for last.  Some golfers simply refer to that view as “unbelievable.”

The existence of a temperate micro-climate in north Cornwall allows the green keepers at St. Enodoc to keep this links in immaculate shape for year-round play.

The golf media agree with the appeal of St. Enodoc’s Church Course as Golf Digest ranks the course as the 99th best in the world; Golf Journal lists St. Enodoc as the 51st best course in Europe; and National Club Golfer declares that St. Enodoc’s Church Course is the 17th best golf course in Great Britain & Ireland.  Those rankings would put a smile on the face of the late, great Braid, who won five Open titles himself in the early 1900s.

The second course at St. Enodoc – the Holywell — is definitely worth playing.  It’s for golfers who want a quicker, less challenging and less expensive links golf experience.

The 4,082 yard Holywell course has a series of par 3s and par 4s.  There are no par 5s.  It’s no pushover, but it does feature undulating fairways and fast-paced, target greens.

Over the last couple of years, St Enodoc has invested a great deal of time and effort in upgrading the Holywell so visitors can expect excellent course conditions that meet the same high standards as those on the main Church course.

After golf, visitors to the nearby community of Rock can enjoy the stunning beaches of Polzeath and Daymer Bay, as well as the charming fishing village of Port Isaac, now well-known as the location for the popular television series Doc Martin.

Just across the Camel Estuary from St Enodoc is the town of Padstow, which is the home of many excellent restaurants such as Rick Stein’s collection of seafood outlets, as well as many independent shops which sell local arts and crafts.

If you are looking to spend the night in the area, there are many local options ‘to hang your hat,’ such as the St. Enodoc Hotel, which is adjacent to the golf club; the St. Moritz Hotel & Spa in nearby Wadebridge, which offers a spa and swimming pool; and The Dormy House B & B in Rock which is within walking distance of the golf club, local shops, restaurants and area beaches.

Coordinate NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY

At 23 High Schools in Palm Beach County on

Tuesday, September 25

(West Palm Beach, FL – September 18, 2018) The League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County (LWVPBC) in conjunction with the School District of Palm Beach County is coordinating a voter registration effort at 23 local high schools on National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 25.

The day will kick-off at 8:30 am with a special breakfast at the School District’s headquarters, 3300 Forest Hill Boulevard in West Palm Beach. More than 200 volunteers are participating in this voter registration campaign that will happen over the lunch hour in public schools from Boca to Jupiter.

“Our aim is to motivate young people to take the first step toward participating in the democratic process by registering to vote,” says Pam Maldonado, chairperson of the Voting Service Committee for the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County. “After the close of registration on October 9, the League will concentrate on educating citizens about their three options for voting: by mail, early voting, and on Election Day.”

National Voter Registration Day is a single day of coordinated media and field efforts to raise awareness of voter registration opportunities and register as many eligible voters as possible. As a nonpartisan day of action, this effort is endorsed by the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED) and the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS).

First observed in 2012 to celebrate American democracy, National Voter Registration Day wants to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to vote so volunteers and organization from all over the country will “hit the streets” in a single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts to reach tens of thousands of potential voters who may not currently be registered.

In addition to the League of Women Voters, national premier partners include the Alliance for Young Organizing, BET, Creative Artists Agency, Carnegie Corporation, Democracy Fund, Democracy Works, Facebook, Fair Elections Center, Google, My Familia Vota, MTV, Military Officers Association of America, National Urban League, Reddit, RISE, Rock the Vote, United Way Worlwide,Vote.org, Voto Latina, WeWork, YWCA and numerous other organizations.

Elliot Bostwick Davis Named New Director and CEO of Norton Museum of Art as it Prepares to Open Foster + Partners-designed Expansion in February 2019

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (Sept. 17, 2018) –The Board of Trustees of the Norton Museum of Art announced today that nationally recognized art historian and curator Elliot Bostwick Davis has been appointed Director and CEO to succeed Hope Alswang, who is retiring on March 1, 2019 after leading the institution for nine years. Davis comes to the Norton from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), where for the past 18 years she has spearheaded all aspects of one of the world’s premier collections of the art of the Americas. She will assume the directorship on March 2, 2019.

Davis joins the Norton at a moment of singular transformation for the institution that includes a 59,000 square-foot expansion and new sculpture garden designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners. The breathtaking new wing and expanded museum, opening to the public on February 9, 2019, offers new galleries, classrooms, state-of-the-art auditorium, and other amenities. The expansion allows Davis to broaden the Museum’s multiple missions of serving as an inspiring and engaging cultural resource for the region, and an incubator for groundbreaking and meaningful exhibitions, scholarship, and programs.

“It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Elliot Davis, an outstanding museum leader, as the new Director and CEO of the Norton Museum of Art,” said Harry Howell, Chairman of the Norton Museum of Art’s Board of Trustees. “Widely respected as a scholar and curator, Elliot is also an innovator in making the art of the Americas a more inclusive field and making museums more active and engaged in their communities. As our institution begins to grow into its new wing, we know that Elliot will create a vision for the Norton that meets our aspirations of being one of the nation’s leading art museums.”

“It is an honor to become the next Director of the Norton Museum of Art at this time of historic transformation,” Davis said. “I look forward to working with all members of the Norton community–Trustees, staff, friends, and members—as we strive to broaden the role of the art museum in contemporary culture. I view the Norton as a place of inspiration, creativity and excellence, and one that will nurture even greater connections to audiences of all ages and walks of life, both in Palm Beach County and beyond.”

Since 2000, Davis has led the MFA’s Art of the Americas department as the John Moors Cabot Chair, charged with responsibility for one of the world’s preeminent collections of paintings, decorative arts and sculpture from North, Central, and South America. The Art of the Americas collection of more than 16,000 objects spans three millennia, from 900 BCE to the late 20th century. During her tenure, Davis created a new and innovative paradigm for presenting American art in a global context and expanded the breadth of artistic representation from across the Americas with important acquisitions of art by women, African Americans, Native Americans, folk and outsider artists, as well as paintings and decorative arts from the Spanish Colonial period.

Committed to expanding the MFA’s engagement with new audiences, she directed and led two pilot programs. The first, funded by the Henry Luce Foundation, developed innovative methods of displaying art from the permanent collection. The second created traveling exhibitions for culturally underserved and rural communities throughout the Northeast, as part of the Art Bridges-Terra program.

Davis led the curatorial team that created the critically acclaimed installation of the Art of the Americas Wing (also designed by Foster + Partners, with whom Davis collaborated on the wing’s design) which opened in November 2010 displaying nearly 5,000 objects on view in 53 galleries, representing one-third of the MFA’s gallery space. She also played an active role in the MFA’s capital campaigns.

At the MFA, she has authored 20 publications and curated 15 exhibitions, including Mark Rothko: Reflection (2017); Making Modern (2016); Jamie Wyeth (2014); Loïs Mailou Jones (2013); Edward Hopper (2007), and Things I Love: The Collections of William I. Koch (2005).

Before joining the MFA, Davis was responsible for American, British, and contemporary art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in its Department of Drawings and Prints. She has served on the boards of the Association of Art Museum Curators, Mona Bismarck American Center, Mass Humanities, Groton School, Shelburne Museum, the New York Academy of Art, and the American Antiquarian Society.

Davis received her Ph.D., M.A., and M. Phil in art history and archaeology from Columbia University. She also earned an M.A. in liberal studies from New York University, and her A.B. cum laude in art history and archaeology from Princeton University.

About the Norton Museum of Art

Founded in 1941, the Norton Museum of Art is recognized for its distinguished holdings in American, European, and Chinese art, and a continually expanding presence for photography and contemporary art. Its masterpieces of 19th century and 20th century European painting and sculpture include works by Brancusi, Gauguin, Matisse, and Picasso, and American works by Stuart Davis, Hopper, O’Keeffe, Pollock, and Sheeler.

On February 9, 2019, the Norton will open a visionary expansion designed by architecture firm Foster + Partners, under the direction of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster. The project includes a new 42,000-square-foot West Wing that doubles education space and increases gallery space for the Norton’s renowned collection. The transformation of the Museum’s 6.3-acre campus, which reorients the Norton’s entrance to the main thoroughfare of South Dixie Highway, restoring the symmetry of the museum’s original 1941 design, will also create a museum in a garden, featuring new, verdant spaces and a sculpture garden.

The Norton presents special exhibitions, lectures, tours, and programs for adults and children throughout the year. In 2011, the Norton launched RAW (Recognition of Art by Women), featuring the work of a living female painter or sculptor and funded by the Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund / ML Dauray Arts Initiative. In 2012, the Norton established the biennial, international Rudin Prize for Emerging Photographers in partnership with Beth Rudin DeWoody, named in honor of her late father, Lewis Rudin.
