Bar Association President Wraps Up Term, Looks Ahead

PRESIDENT OF PALM BEACH COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION FINISHES TERM, LOOKS TOWARD FUTURE GOALS FOR HIMSELF, GARDENS FIRM
John Whittles Recounts His Time In Office, Looks Ahead to Future

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) – Attorney John Whittles of Mathison Whittles, LLP, is wrapping up his year-long term as the President of the Palm Beach County Bar Association with gratitude for the experience and excitement for future plans. Whittles’ time at the helm of the nearly century-old association was eventful – from a fire nearly burning down the Association’s headquarters in West Palm Beach to his recent interview of internationally-known trial law figure Amanda Knox.

“The past year has been so rewarding for me both professionally and personally,” said Whittles. “I’ve been a board member for many years, but being president was a whole new experience. The relationships I formed and the charity work I was a part of really made the job satisfying.”

Founded in 1922, The Palm Beach County Bar Association is an organization with a membership of just under 5,000 lawyers, judges and other legal professionals. Membership is voluntary, and the Association offers a myriad of services to their members, particularly for continuing legal education.

The Association also focuses on giving back to the community, namely through its support of the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County, which provides free legal services to underprivileged residents. The Bar Association also supports Habitat for Humanity and Café Joshua, a catering company that provides education and experience to help the homeless gain valuable work experience to land outside employment, with proceeds benefiting The Lord’s Place.

“We are proud of our profession and the Association’s effort to dispel the sometimes-negative perception of lawyers by using our legal skills to assist those in need,” Whittles said. “We feel giving back to the community through both legal aid and just offering helping hands and our time is an important element of upholding the standards and ethics of the Bar.”

In January, a car accident resulted in a downed wire that caught the Association’s offices on fire. It happened overnight, so no one was hurt, but extensive damage had been done, and the cleanup process was something Whittles will never forget.

“It happened at a busy time of year,” Whittles said. “We had to find alternative space for people to work, notify the members and start to rebuild. That took months. It was unfortunate, but also a learning experience for me in crisis management and teamwork.”

Most recently, Whittles’ position as Bar Association president afforded him the opportunity at an Association luncheon to interview Amanda Knox, whose story of imprisonment in Italy on murder charges led to global headlines for many years.

“Amanda Knox’s story is fascinating from all angles, but especially the human-interest piece,” Whittles said following the presentation. “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to get Amanda’s account of what happened. As an attorney, I know there are two sides to every story, and this luncheon was the perfect opportunity to examine all angles.”

Whittles’ experience with the Bar Association only reinforced his strong support for the legal community in Palm Beach County.

“We are a unique climate for lawyers,” Whittles said. “We have the best judges I’ve seen in my travels. Judges go out of their way to accept each other and the established network of lawyers. Expectations and understanding come from the top down, and it all comes down to a high caliber of people. We have mentoring programs in place for more efficient and caring lawyers, and we work hard to push professional development.” Programs include the award-winning “Coffee and Bagels With The Judges,” which are regular meetings designed to connect judges and lawyers in a more candid environment outside the courtroom.

With almost 20 years of experience as an attorney, Whittles is now looking forward to spending more time with his wife, young daughter and dog. He’s also looking forward to playing more with his rock band, “Counselors of Rock.” The band recently won an all-attorney talent show benefitting the Gulfstream Boy Scouts of America.

The next president of the Palm Beach County Bar Association will take the position on June 17.

Happy May, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day

Happy May, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day

I hope you are all enjoying the month of May.  I really enjoyed my Mother’s Day this year by going to the beach.  The weather was sunny and not too hot.  My friend and I went snorkeling and saw lots of fish.  Then we gathered in Wellington at my brother-in-law’s home for a barbecue.  I don’t want to brag, but my nephew makes the best dry rub ribs ever.  Anyway, that was my Mother’s Day.  Hope yours was good too!

Steve and Donna Willey of Village Music Wellington

This month we are proud to feature Village Music Wellington for our “AW Spotlight” story.  Donna and Steve Willey have successfully grown the business and are now teaching over 300 students music lessons (thanks to their terrific team of music teachers).  They are currently located in the Fresh Market plaza on Forest Hill Blvd., but they have outgrown their current location.  Read the article and see where they are moving to in the fall.  It’s going to be a great location, where they will have a café, a stage for performing and an outdoor area.

Also check out “Cultural Corner” for a story about an amazing artist Maureen Fulgenzi. Her work can be seen at the US Bank Palm Beach branch. Writer Angela Shaw takes us into Fulgenzi’s background and also her technique.

Speaking of taking us places, Ms. Travel with Terri takes us on an exploration of how to choose the best cruise.  Today there are so many options when it comes to cruising. This article has some great insights.

A warm welcome to our new Teen Talk writer Mikayla Carroll.  Mikayla is a student at Palm Beach Central High School and is also our intern for AroundWellington®.  In this month’s article, she explains that only one thing (when preparing for your college years) is certain – uncertainty.

Teen Talk writer Mikayla Carroll

Check out all of the other articles this month too!  Hope you enjoy your Memorial Day weekend and get to spend some time outdoors.

See you Around Wellington®.

6th Annual Chef’s Helping Heroes Renewal Coalition Benefit
Dinner was a Huge Success

JUPITER, FL (May 12, 2017) – April 26th was a magical night along the banks of the Loxahatchee River. The Renewal Coalition held their 6th Annual Chefs Helping Heroes fundraising event at Sara Lankler’s private waterfront home with exquisite views, reminiscent of old Florida.

This year, seven of the area’s top chefs came together volunteering their time and talents to prepare their specialty dishes for the attendees. 135 guests and donors attended, along with the special guests, wounded service members and their wives, who are the reason the organization exists.

The evening kicked off with Jupiter High School ROTC color guard and the National Anthem. It was followed by the incredible dinner where food abounded! There was also dancing, tarot card readers, raffles and a lively live auction. Many thanks to the attendees who helped raise over $90,000 to provide fully paid retreats in Florida for post 9/11 injured and ill service members and their families.

Our amazing chefs were Chef Frank Eucalitto ( Café Chardonnay) Chef John Carlino (Chef Corp), Chef Dominick Laudia (American Culinary Federation), Chef Pascal Georget (Reef Grill), Chef Erik Pettersen( Evo), Chef Justin Knight (Dive Bar),Chef Laura Ashley(Laura Ashley Catering) donated the 5 star dinner for the evening. Brian Chamis from The Vine Post was the sommelier for the evening.

We could not have done it without the support of our sponsors: Better Party Rentals, Document Storage Systems, Worth Group, Bill and Becky Halm, Marcia G. Nappi Foundation, Southern Aviation Systems, Al and Maria Wilshire, Admirals Cove Foundation, Dive Bar Restaurant, Waste Management, General Wayne Jackson, Lee Machette, Titos Vodka, International Parking System, Jammin Jim, Paul Storm, Cassidy Ice.

Renewal Coalition provides fully paid retreats for combat injured or ill service members and their families. Many of our wounded service members and their families must spend weeks or months in military hospitals, VA hospitals or rehabilitation centers all over the country. These extended medical stays take a huge toll on the families. Renewal Coalition brings veterans and their families to Jupiter, Florida for a fully paid retreat in order to help them reconnect as a couple or family before returning to rehabilitation, active duty or civilian life. The coalition was founded by Sandy and Sara Lankler as a labor of love. Mr. Lankler passed away in 2013 but Sara continues to be the driving force behind the organization.

For more information, visit http://renewalcoalition.org/. There are many opportunities to volunteer and donate.

Wellington Schools Accept Waste Management Education Grants

On Tuesday, May 9, 2017 Wellington’s Council welcomed representatives from five Wellington schools to receive Education Grant awards totaling $9,500.

WMI also provided contributions for the purchase of books to Elbridge Gale and Panther Run Elementary Schools ($1,800 each), and Emerald Cove Middle School ($900).

As part of their contract with Wellington, WMI is responsible for providing these sustainability scholarships for use in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs at the high schools.
