Festival Fellowships Now Available for African-American, Asian American & Latina/Latino Poets

Deadline to Apply is November 14, 2016

(Delray Beach, FL – August 10, 2016) Susan R. Williamson, Director of The Palm Beach Poetry Festival, today announced that it will offer three fellowships that provide full workshop tuition and lodging in Delray Beach for the upcoming 13th Annual Palm Beach Poetry Festival, January 16-21, 2017. “The fellowships are offered to open the festival workshop doors widely to qualified poets and to insure the festival’s workshops provide an enriching variety of experiences through working with poets from a wide variety of cultures,” says Williamson.

The three fellowships are the Palm Beach Poetry Festival African American Fellowship, the CantoMundo Palm Beach Poetry Festival Fellowship and the Kundiman Palm Beach Poetry Festival Fellowship.

Each fellowship recipient will be an outstanding poet who will benefit from, and contribute to participation in the workshop. A writing sample, letter of introduction, and description of need are an integral part of the application and selection process. Fellowships applications are now open. For details, please visit the links below to each for specifics, details and to apply. The deadline to apply for these fellowships is November 14, 2016.

What the Critics are saying:

“Short Gone Wild 4 underscores a terrific way to blow off angst about today’s polarized landscape.”

“Shorts also benefits from some of the best talent in the region to pull off plays riffing on how political furor has undercut marriages, friendships and even potential sexual trysts.”

“If this seemingly endless presidential election has left you in need of laughs, vote Shorts Gone Wild 4: Decision 2016.”

“The eight plays – written by seven playwrights and performed by six actors – are light, snappy, funny, sometimes gleefully risque.”

Wellington Earns Top Honors for Budget, 21 Years Running

0750e3fe-93cb-48fa-b360-0237a0883415The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the Village of Wellington’s Office of Financial Management & Budget for the Fiscal Year 2016 Budget. This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting in the nation.

This year’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is the 21st continuously earned. The Village gives special recognition to Budget & Reporting Director, Christine Wadleigh and Budget Analyst, Rubi Cabret for their significant contributions to the body of work that earned this esteemed honor. This accolade reflects Wellington’s commitment to meeting the highest principles and best practices in governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the Village has to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as:
A policy document
A financial plan
An operations guide
A communications devise
Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.

In addition to receiving the award, Wellington’s budget received the Special Performance Measures Recognition by achieving “outstanding” ratings from all reviewers for presentation of performance measures. This is the second year the Village has received this special recognition.

The Government Finance Officers Association is a nonprofit, professional association serving nearly 18,000 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

Who: South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, in partnership with Jupiter Medical Center and Palm Healthcare Foundation, are teaming up to present one of the most popular traveling exhibits, Our Body: The Universe Within.

What:  Our Body: The Universe Within, the Science Center’s seasonal blockbuster exhibition opens to the public!!  Appropriate for all ages, Our Body literally goes “under the skin” to reveal the mysteries of human anatomy.  Visitors will tour three-dimensional human bodies, specimens and organs, which were preserved using a process known as polymer impregnation.

Polymer impregnation is a relatively new method of preservation whereby bodily fluids are replaced by liquid plastic, which is then hardened to create a solid, durable anatomic specimen that will last indefinitely.  Most impressively, the process leaves even the finest, most delicate tissue structure virtually intact, down to the microscopic sphere, making the process invaluable for medical study.

As guests enter the exhibit, they will have the opportunity to examine the human body as a whole.  The exhibit continues by examining each of the body’s major systems, allowing visitors to see firsthand how they function and relate to other systems.  In the human body there are 11 organized “systems” to ensure an individual’s survival, with such functions as metabolism, responsiveness, movement, reproduction, growth, differentiation, respiration, digestion and excretion.  The systems are muscular, skeleton, nervous, digestive, respiratory, defense, reproductive, urinary, circulatory, endocrine and hematologic.  Each is detailed through beautiful and intricate displays of the human body, paired with signage explaining functions and processes.

When: Saturday, October 22 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.*

*Our Body is on display through Sunday, April 23, 2017

Where: South Florida Science Center and Aquarium; 4801 Dreher Trail North; West Palm Beach, 33405

Why: “We are thrilled to bring ‘Our Body’ to the locals and visitors of South Florida,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO. “This is one of the most popular and most riveting traveling exhibitions on the museum circuit, and we know our guests will be lining up to get a glimpse of the science beneath the skin.”

“Normally only doctors and scientists are allowed to see this extraordinary in-depth look at the human anatomy, which makes this a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” continued Crampton.  “This rare opportunity to see the human body from the inside – to see real-life examples – is also likely to spark an interest in children to seek careers in science and medicine.”

How Much: Admission to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium during Our Body: The Universe Within is $16.95 for adults, $12.95 for children ages 3 to 12 and $14.95 for seniors aged 60 and older.  Science Center members and children under 3 are free.

2011 photo updates for Wycliffe Golf and Country Club

August 7, 2016, Wellington, Fla., — Wycliffe Golf & Country Club announced today that it has been awarded the prestigious Distinguished Gold Club of the World award, as determined by the annual Distinguished Clubs of the World award program conducted by BoardRoom magazine, one of the most respected trade publications serving private clubs.

“We’d like to congratulate Wycliffe Golf & Country Club for earning Distinguished Gold Club status,” said John Fornaro, Publisher of BoardRoom magazine, “Special recognition also goes out to Wycliffe’s General Manager and COO, Darrell Wilde,  as well as the club’s board of directors, its department heads, and entire staff for their efforts in providing an excellent member experience.”

As defined by Distinguished Clubs, “Member Experience” is that special combination of “Qualities” that a private club provides its members.  It is not just the quality of service, or of the facilities, or of the product provided, it is also the quality of the staff and of the management, as well as the overall club governance they deliver.  The most important quality, however, is the quality of the intangible.  While difficult to measure, the latter is comprised of those magic moments experienced, the members befriended, the memorable events and famous tournaments attended, as well as the club traditions, history, and heritage proudly recognized.
