Please note, all events, unless at the STEM Studio location in Jupiter, include access to the Science Center’s current traveling exhibit, Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body.

Grossology takes visitors on a tour of their bodies, by way of Magic School Bus-style, as they literally step through the mouth of the exhibit.  Once inside the exhibit, “Nigel Nose-It-All” will explain why people have runny noses, allergies and sneeze; “Tour Du Nose” takes guests on a tour through a nose replica – standing at 10-feet-tall; “Burp Man,” a larger than life cartoon character, who drinks from a three-foot-tall soda can pumped by visitors, details the cause of burps; and “Click Ick” allows visitors an opportunity to play nine different activities, including exploratory labs, puzzles, games and more.  As visitors wind their way through 5,000-square-feet of human science, they will also learn about skin issues, “gas attacks” and vomit.  The exhibit will be on display through October 2.

The Science Center is open Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Florida Power & Light Company presented with Emergency Recovery Award for its restoration efforts in the aftermath of tornado event

FPL is recognized by Edison Electric Institute with prestigious award for restoring power safely and quickly after tornadoes struck the company’s service area in January 2016

FPL

JUNO BEACH, Fla., June 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) today announced it has received the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) “Emergency Recovery Award” for outstanding power restoration efforts after tornadoes and severe weather hit Florida in January 2016. The award recognizes utilities for their outstanding response to help restore service to customers following a storm or natural disaster.

“At FPL, we know how important reliable service is for our customers and we are focused on providing safe and reliable energy year-round,” said Eric Silagy, president and CEO for FPL. “Our teams prepare year-round to ensure we are ready to respond when severe weather strikes – training extensively and incorporating lessons learned from previous storms so we can reduce the number and duration of outages. The Emergency Recovery Award is a testament to our team’s dedication to helping return customers’ lives back to normal safely and as quickly as possible.”

On Jan. 17 and 18, severe thunderstorms generated two tornadoes within FPL’s service area, as well as wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour and severe lightning. FPL crews worked safely and quickly to restore service to its customers in the face of challenging conditions. At the event’s peak, this violent weather caused more than 100,000 customer outages. Over the course of the two days, service was restored to customers within an average of four hours.

“This honor truly goes to our restoration field personnel who worked tirelessly under demanding conditions to restore service for our customers,” said Manny Miranda, senior vice president of Power Delivery for FPL. “January’s tornadic events put our storm readiness to the test and the team’s response demonstrated FPL’s commitment to providing reliable service in good weather and bad. Our team responded quickly, activating our storm response plan, deploying our Mobile Command Center to the hardest hit area and ensuring we had boots on the ground ready to respond and work until every customer’s lights were back on.”

The Emergency Recovery Award is presented twice annually to EEI member companies to recognize their extraordinary efforts to restore power to customers after service disruptions caused by severe weather conditions or other natural events. The winners are chosen by a panel of judges, following an international nomination process and the awards are presented during EEI’s Annual Convention in Chicago.

“Getting the lights back on following a major storm is never easy – FPL’s restoration efforts following these tornadoes was truly remarkable,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn. “FPL’s focus on helping minimize the impact for its customers is a demonstration of its commitment to reliability and customer service.”

CLIENT APPRECIATION LUAU HELD AT JEROME GOLDEN CENTER FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH IN RECOGNITION OF MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

CLIENT APPRECIATION LUAU HELD AT JEROME GOLDEN CENTER FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH IN RECOGNITION OF MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

mental_health2West Palm Beach, FL (June 13, 2016) — The tastes and talents of Hawaii took center stage at the Jerome Golden Center for Behavioral Health on May 18 when Mr. Jerry and Dr. Barbara Golden sponsored and hosted a Hawaiian luau for the Center’s clients who participate in our Outpatient Day Program including, Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Day Group programs. The clients enjoyed the event; they dressed in bright Hawaiian clothes and wore colorful leis, enjoyed the delicacies, participated in a costume contest, and sang and danced to music provided by DJ and staff member, Christopher Drakeford.

”It was great to see the clients smiling, singing and I especially loved the dancing,” said Heather Tate-Boldt, MSW, Supervisor of Discovery Day Treatment and Partial Hospitalization Services. “We are constantly seeking new ways to expand our recreational programs to include safe and fun activities for people with mental health disorders. We are so grateful for Mr. and Dr. Golden for hosting the luau and making our clients feel important,” continued Tate-Boldt.

The luau was one of several events that the Center held during May to help remove the stigma often associated with mental illness. Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been celebrated each May. The luau was an opportunity to let the clients know they are appreciated and that “They Matter”. “You Matter” is the new theme of the Center’s Clients’ Rights Initiative Campaign.

Everyone in attendance shared in the Aloha spirit. According to the old kahunas (priests), being able to live the Spirit of Aloha was a way of reaching self-perfection and realization for our own body and soul. Aloha is sending and receiving a positive energy. Aloha is living in harmony. When you live the Spirit of Aloha, you create positive feelings and thoughts, which are never gone. They exist in space, multiply and spread over to others. “Aloha” means mutual regard and affection and extends warmth in caring with no obligation in return. “Aloha” is the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other person for collective existence. “Aloha” means to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen and to know the unknowable.

The Golden Center provides treatment to adults and children with mental health and/or substance use disorders helping them restore and maintain their productive lives in the community. Its mission is to help clients build resiliency, facilitate recovery and achieve reintegration into the community by designing and delivering behavioral health care services that meet their needs and expectations.
Learn more about the Golden Center’s programs and services at www.GoldenCtr.org, Facebook at JeromeGoldenCenter, Twitter @JeromeGoldenCtr or by calling 561-383-5723.

Local Entrepreneur and Shark Tank Candidate Continues to Blossom

blossom

A local entrepreneur and mother of two has defied the odds by inventing, launching and selling her patent pending product straight from her living room in Wellington, Florida. Anita Imbesi launched Pretty Things Blossom On™ product line, which consists of elegant “faux” flower bouquets with a special surprise in the middle. Utilizing fully organic essential oil capsules designed herself, Anita has created a flower that always smells fresh and never dies.

“I have a storied history of inventing products” stated Anita Imbesi. “This product is the first of its kind and touches on multiple needs from wedding and home decorations to health and wellness needs such as a hospital lobby.”

Each flower center contains an essential oil capsule which is also patent pending and invented by Anita. The simple and elegant design makes it easy to activate and replace the essential oil capsules complete with various scents. The ease of use and availability of multiple scents makes the Blossom On product line much easier and affordable than new flowers or maintaining organic floral arrangements.

“When I first created this product, I had a few problems I was hoping to solve with the product. My customers have taken the product’s concept and ran with it to find multiple uses, from holiday to homecoming corsage to home health care.”

From Lavender scent in the summer to Peppermint in the winter, Anita’s scented faux flowers are the perfect low maintenance arrangement for homes, offices, schools, libraries, hospitals, and any other shared space in the community. With an aesthetic look and ability to control the scent of a closed space, these faux flowers are as beautiful as they are useful. Known for their health and wellness related traits, essential oils have been used for years in life, work and health settings to reduce stress, headaches, anxiety, lack of sleep, and is highlighted as a household cure for common ailments.

“At first glance, I receive a lot of comments on how beautiful these flowers are. Once I show how easy the essential oils are placed in the flower, people become blown away with the prospect of an aesthetic home decoration which also has healing principles.”

Essential oils are derived from their natural origin and supplied from India to ensure there are no synthetics or chemicals. Pretty Things & Company ensures that the oils are of the highest quality therapeutic grade to foster ultimate wellness for the mind and body. The Blossom On™ collection comes in three different colors and scents, and is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA).

Essential oils are beneficial because they simultaneously stimulate the part of the brain connected to smell (olfactory system) and the emotional brain (limbic system). This process causes the body’s immune system, digestive system and libido to become active, which helps to improve overall health in areas such as sleep, stress, and mood.

“I truly believe in the unique benefits that our essential oils can provide. There is nothing currently available that mirrors my product, making it one-of-a-kind. Our beautiful bouquets will infuse aromatic fragrances throughout your home or office and can accompany any style.” shared Imbessi.

Pretty Things & Company hopes to keep homes looking revived, smelling refreshed and fostering overall wellness. The company is currently offering a promotion to the first 100 people who sign up for the company’s newsletter to receive 25% off their first order, sign up today!
