Afterlife: Tombs & Treasures of Ancient Egypt, the Science Center’s next traveling exhibition, will open to the public on October 11, 2014, running through April 18, 2015.  In true Science Center-style, the highly anticipated blockbuster exhibition will have interactive components, making it feel like guests have taken a trip to Egypt to explore ancient artifacts and tombs.

Palm Beach Beekeepers Association to Host 94th Annual 

Florida State Beekeepers Association Conference
October 2-4 in West Palm Beach
(West Palm Beach, FL – September 10, 2014) The Palm Beach Beekeepers Association(PBBA) today announced that it would be hosting the 94th annual Conference of the Florida State Beekeepers Association (FSBA), October 2-4, 2014 at Embassy Suites Hotel in West Palm Beach.  In fact, this is the first time that this statewide Conference has been held in West Palm Beach, and beekeepers from across the country will be attending.

This year’s Conference is dedicated to the honeybee and the beekeepers tending the hives. It is designed for beekeepers of all levels – wanna-bee, hobbyist, sideliner and commercial – with presentations by nationally recognized industry experts, authors, scientists and educators.
In addition, there will be honey judging, live bee demonstrations at the apiary atop the hotel, panel discussions and breakout sessions covering topics for both the beginner and the advanced beekeeper. The vendor and exhibitor area will display the latest beekeeping equipment and accessories, and attendees will be “a-buzz” over the free gifts and spectacular items in the silent and live auctions.

About the Florida State Beekeepers Association:
Founded in 1920, FSBA is organized to aid in the development and promotion of practical beekeeping methods in the State of Florida; to act in the interest of beekeepers in carrying on statewide beekeeping affairs; to aid in the exchange of mutual beekeeping methods; and to act as the representative of Florida beekeepers in state and national beekeeping affairs, as well as educational and scientific purposes.  FSBA works with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food, Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), Florida Farm Bureau, and the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry’s Apiary Inspection Program, through which all honeybee colonies in Florida are inspected as required by law.

Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery features some of Palm Beach County’s finest animalThe Key and wild-life artists in an exhibit about CATS.  The Cat-O-Strophic Affair opens on Saturday, October 4th and continues through Wednesday, October 15.  Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery is located at 15 South J Street in Downtown Lake Worth. The exhibit is free to the public.

The Cat-O-Strophic Affair is designed to match animal lovers and art collectors with the exceptional art being created locally by artists.  If patrons bring a card from their favorite animal shelter, 10% of that sale will be donated to the venue.  Because the gallery is a non-profit cooperative, the works of art are accessibly priced for any pocket book.

Featured are paintings, pottery, sculpture and jewelry, all depicting cats; wild, home-bound, and anthropomorphic.  The humor shown by the artists is rampant throughout the exhibition. Front and center is Mer-puss, the model for a huge MerPuss painting by Vandy.  Strutting around the gallery are mouse toting cats.  Conservationists will treasure the wild tigers and lions.  Grab a cat-mug for a little cat-nip.  Bracelets, pins and earrings have crept in on little cats’ feet. Fuzzy felted cat-mobiles hang from the ceilings.  Their felted cat relatives run rife.  Wellington’s contribution, a Cat-toon will be found on a wall.

PALM BEACH COUNTY CHABADS TO HOST MEGA CHALLAH BAKE SEPT. 22 AT WEST PALM BEACH MARRIOTT 

—Hundreds of Jewish Women to Bake Challah Together For Jewish New Year 2014—

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Sept. 2— A Mega Challah Bake—organized by the Chabad centers of the northern section of Palm Beach County—will be held 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22 at the Marriott Hotel in West Palm Beach to honor the upcoming the 2014 Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashana. The event is scheduled to bring together hundreds of women from Palm Beach County to bake challah, a braided bread loaf traditionally eaten by Jews on the Sabbath and holidays.

“Few Jewish foods evoke the same warm sentiments as Challah. Many remember the aroma of freshly baked Challah in their grandmothers’ kitchens, and always on the table for Shabbath dinner with family and friends,” said Chaya Gancz, director of Chabad of West Palm Beach, which is among the 10 Chabad centers hosting the event.

“The challah baking process has always been regarded as a time for spiritual reflection and serves as a reminder to nurture our relationships,” she said, and all women and girls over age 16 are invited to join the Mega Challah Bake, regardless of Jewish knowledge, affiliation or background.

The program will include a hands-on workshop, teaching participants the secret to great tasting challah from scratch. It also includes a beautiful dessert buffet and a soul stirring musical performance by a local Jewish singer.

“On the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah, many will be busy preparing their holiday meals. This event is an opportunity to not only focus on one important dinner food, but also the spiritual reflection that accompanies it,” she said. “A few moments of introspection will be included to pray together for health, happiness, prosperity and any other blessings needed, with the hope that the power in numbers will help strengthen each one’s prayers.”

Plaza Theatre Announces Exciting News for Conservatory Program

Puzzle Players Autism Theatre Troupe, American Idol Workshop,  Clean Teen Comedy and Cabaret among groundbreaking new programs

MANALAPAN, FL (September 8, 2014) The Plaza Theatre is taking theater to a new level, and to a new market this season with its dynamic new Conservatory programming. Unique programs include the Plaza Theatre Puzzle Players Autism Theatre Troupe, Clean Teen Comedy and Teen Cabaret Night and an American Idol Workshop which includes a trip to Disneyworld for the American Idol Audition Experience.

The Plaza Theatre Puzzle Players welcomes those on the Autism Spectrum to come out for a chance to gain new social and life skills training through theatrics. Led by Jeffrey Voner, Palm Beach County School District Behavioral and Autism Specialist and theater professional, the Puzzle Players learn new skills through participating in theater, music, role-playing, games, performance and more. The Players meet every Wednesday evening from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. starting September 23.

Another new program is Clean Teen Comedy and Teen Cabaret Night, which offers stand up comedy and other performance opportunities for teenagers.  Each teen is given five minutes to showcase performance-ready, family-friendly material. The next Clean Teen Comedy Night is September 20 at 7:30 p.m in ClubPlaza, the Plaza Theatre’s 80 seat cabaret space.

Finally, the Plaza Theatre Conservatory will be hosting an American Idol Workshop. Those looking for a chance at the reality show will learn techniques from professional casting directors, music instructors and audition coaches. The classes culminate with a trip with Amy Davis Travel to Disney World for the chance to participate in the American Idol Audition Experience. Classes are scheduled to start Wednesday September 23.

The Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Conservatory is committed to the growth of self-confidence and essential life skills through individualized instruction in performing and communication arts training. All group classes are limited to 12 students and all performance workshops and productions are limited to no more than 35 students. Opportunities for both adults and young actors include classes, workshops and performances in the 250 seat professional theater and the more intimate cabaret space ClubPlaza.

Nuts have many health benefits that some people may not be aware of. According to mayoclinic.org, “People who eat nuts as part of a heart-healthy diet can lower the low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad”) cholesterol level in their blood. High LDL is one of the primary causes of heart disease.”

Nuts contain unsaturated fats such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which both lower bad cholesterol levels. Nuts also contain Omega-3s which are a healthy form of fatty acids that seem to help the human heart by preventing dangerous heart rhythms that can lead to heart attacks. If that’s not enough, nuts also have fiber, Vitamin E, Plant sterols and L-arginine (an amino acid) which are all healthy for humans.

According to medicalnewstoday.com, “Almonds are packed with vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber, and are associated with a number of health benefits. Just a handful of almonds, approximately one ounce, contains one-eighth of our necessary daily protein.” Almonds are also the nut with the richest vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant.”

Peanuts are healthy as well, according to whfoods.com, “Studies of diets with a special emphasis on peanuts have shown that this little legume is a big ally for a healthy heart. In one such randomized, double-blind, cross-over study involving 22 subjects, a high monounsaturated diet that emphasized peanuts and peanut butter decreased cardiovascular disease risk by an estimated 21% compared to the average American diet.”

Walnuts containing the most antioxidants compared to any other nut and are also the richest in omega-3 fatty acids, which fight inflammation. According to “Thehealthsite.com, “contrary to what people believe, walnuts are actually good for weight management since an ounce of walnut contains 2.5g of omega 3 fats, 4g of protein and 2g of fibre that help provide satiety (the feeling of being full).” Walnuts also contain melatonin so they’re great before you go to bed.

There’s plenty of more nuts that are very healthy that I didn’t mention in this article. So next time you’re looking to grab a snack go nuts.

Volunteers Needed for International Coastal Cleanup on September 20, 2014

Wellington is calling on its residents to roll up their sleeves and make a difference in the community during the International Coastal Cleanup! From 10:00am to 12:00pm on Saturday, September 20, 2014 volunteers will be picking up trash and loose litter along Greenbriar Blvd. & Greenview Shores Blvd. and in the Folkestone/Yarmouth community. Water and t-shirts will be supplied to all participants.

To register for the event, visit www.wellingtonfl.gov and click on the “International Coastal Cleanup” image in the scrolling events section and download the volunteer application form. Completed forms can be returned to the Community Services Office (1100 Wellington Trace) or participants can scan and email the form to Scott Campbell, Community Programs Manager, at scampbell@wellingtonfl.gov. Volunteer registration forms can also be completed on site the day of the event.
