Cultural Council for Palm Beach County Announces Distinguished Woman Artist’s Prize

0

November 12, 2025 (Lake Worth Beach, Fla.) — The Cultural Council for Palm Beach County has named Palm Beach County artist Sharon Lee Hart as the recipient of the inaugural Distinguished Woman Artist’s Prize. The Council announced the prize to an audience of about 200 people at the opening reception of its Main Gallery exhibition, Fiber Optics, last week, presenting a giant check for $10,000 as a surprise to Hart.

The new prize, which is funded for the next five years by artist Suzi K. Edwards through the Henry L. Kimelman Foundation, champions established female artists at an inflection point in their career. In addition to developing her artistic development and achievements, Hart will have the opportunity to exhibit her works at the Cultural Council or a collaborating institutional exhibition within the next five years.

Earlier this year, the Council requested nominations for the prize recipient from Palm Beach County arts professionals. Eligible nominees must identify as female, be 40 years or older, and have resided in Palm Beach County for over three years. They also must demonstrate quality work and a strong commitment to their practice. A separate, independent committee of national and international arts professionals later reviewed, scored, and selected the artist on a competitive basis.

“We are thrilled to present this inaugural prize to Sharon Lee Hart, whose beautiful photography, collages, mixed media, and artist books demonstrate her expansive talents and commitment to continuous learning,” said Dave Lawrence, Cultural Council president and CEO. “This award, generously supported by Suzi K. Edwards, underscores the Council’s dedication to ensuring all artists—including experienced creatives—can continue to live, work, and thrive in Palm Beach County.”

In addition to maintaining an active studio practice, Hart is an associate professor of art at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. With an environmental focus, she has also served as an artist-in-residence at Joshua Tree National Park in California, the Oak Spring Garden Foundation in Upperville, Va., and the Studios of Key West in Florida. In 2023, Hart also received the SECAC (formerly the Southeastern College Art Conference) Artist’s Fellowship Award. Her work is in several permanent collections, including the King County Public Art Collection in Seattle and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Mo., as well as national and international solo and group exhibitions.

“When the prize was announced, I was in shock!” Hart said. “Given the nature of the award, it acknowledges all these years of hard work. There are two major projects I’m currently working on, so the prize is an extra dose of acknowledgement and energy that helps keep the momentum going. I’m deeply grateful to the Cultural Council, Suzi Edwards, and the panelists for this honor. Their support of women artists and commitment to recognizing our work will have a lasting impact on my practice and surely on other artists in the future.”

The Distinguished Woman Artist’s Prize is one of several recurring programs at the Cultural Council that support both emerging and established Palm Beach County artists. For more information, visit palmbeachculture.com/artist-grants.

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (November 12, 2025) – In a dazzling display of community spirit and philanthropic passion, more than 210 devoted supporters gathered for the West Palm Beach Library Foundation’s annual Food for Thought Dinner on November 8 at the prestigious Beach Club in Palm Beach. The evening was nothing short of extraordinary, raising a record-breaking sum to advance the Foundation’s mission of transforming lives through the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach.

“This was more than a dinner—it was a celebration of ideas, inspiration, and impact,” said Margaret Moraskie, Chair of the Library Foundation Board of Directors. “Thanks to the vision of Event Chair Melissa Sullivan and her dedicated committee, guests were treated to an unforgettable evening of meaningful conversation and culinary excellence, all in support of the life-changing programs offered by our beloved library.”

Now in her third year as event chair, Sullivan shared her heartfelt commitment: “I absolutely love the Mandel Public Library. It’s a beacon of opportunity for everyone in our community—but especially for children. Reading is a critical life skill, and the library opens that door for so many.”

The evening began with a glittering cocktail reception in the Garden Terrace Room, where guests mingled over an exquisite selection of hors d’oeuvres—from Brie with Candied Walnuts and Pear Tart to Mini Crab Cakes with Sweet Chili Sauce. The air buzzed with anticipation.

Dinner was a feast for the senses. The grand finale? Chocolate Profiteroles that left guests swooning.

But the true highlight of the evening was the captivating conversation between Daniel Silva, internationally acclaimed author of 28 New York Times bestsellers, and his wife, Jamie Gangel, CNN Special Correspondent. “Daniel’s insights into his writing process and his latest novel, An Inside Job, which debuted at #1 this summer, left the audience spellbound,” said Dean Dimke, CEO of the Library Foundation.

The Northwood Hills Neighborhood Association invites the public to step back in time at its Centennial Home Tour on Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 3:00 to 8:00 PM. This year’s event marks a milestone celebration of the neighborhood’s 100th anniversary, showcasing the unique architectural heritage and vibrant community spirit of one of West Palm Beach’s most distinctive historic districts.

Northwood Hills, nestled just north of downtown West Palm Beach, is one of the city’s best-kept secrets. Known for its rolling topography—including the highest elevation point in South Florida, the neighborhood features canopy-lined streets, eclectic architecture spanning the 1920s through the 1950s, and several legendary “castle homes” built during the Prohibition era. This year’s tour will feature one such castle, celebrating its own 100th birthday, transformed into a glamorous 1920s-style VIP Speakeasy House.

“This year’s Centennial Home Tour isn’t just about beautiful architecture—it’s about celebrating the creativity, resilience, and spirit that make Northwood Hills such a special place,” said Kaleigh Hoffman, Chair of the Home Tour Committee.

“This is more than just a home tour,” said Angela Russel, President of the Northwood Hills Neighborhood Association. “It’s a celebration of a century of history, architecture, and the incredible community that has preserved this special place. We’re thrilled to share our neighborhood’s stories with visitors and raise funds to ensure these treasures are protected for the next 100 years.”

Event Highlights Include:

Historic Homes with Stories to Tell

Tour attendees will explore a curated selection of architecturally significant homes, including the former residence of the late Jim Ponce, West Palm Beach’s beloved local historian known as “Mr. Palm Beach” for his legendary Worth Avenue walking tours and encyclopedic knowledge of the area’s history.

The VIP Speakeasy Experience

The crown jewel of the tour is a 100-year-old castle home, meticulously transformed into an authentic 1920s speakeasy. VIP ticket holders will enjoy an immersive experience complete with period décor, curated cocktails, and exclusive access to this architectural marvel. Miami-based jazz ensemble featuring vocalist Laura Munevar, arranger Juan Tobon, drummer Carlos Rodriguez, and bassist Kai Sanchez will provide the soundtrack to the evening, evoking the glamour and energy of the Roaring Twenties.

Classic Car Showcase

Vintage automobile enthusiasts will delight in a display of classic cars throughout the tour route, including vintage Model A’s courtesy of the Model A Restorer’s Club and stunning M&G Corvettes, adding to the nostalgic atmosphere.

Culinary Delights

Each home will feature curated appetizers and wine pairings, with a dedicated dessert tent offering sweet treats to cap off the experience.

Preserving History for Future Generations

As the neighborhood association’s only annual fundraiser, proceeds from the Centennial Home Tour will support the organization’s mission to preserve and enhance Northwood Hills’ unique character. Past funds have been used to plant native trees and beautify the community. This year, the association hopes to launch a Historic Preservation Micro-Grant Program to assist residents in maintaining and restoring their historic homes and landscaping—ensuring that this irreplaceable piece of West Palm Beach’s architectural heritage endures.

The Northwood Hills Neighborhood Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the historic character and fostering community engagement in the Northwood Hills district.

Vita Nova Shines a Light on Youth Homelessness During National Awareness Month

0

West Palm Beach, FLH (November 10, 2025) — November marks National Youth Homelessness Awareness Month, and Vita Nova, Inc. is urging the community to take notice of a growing crisis—right here in Palm Beach County.

According to the 2025 Point-In-Time Count, there are over 1,500 homeless people in Palm Beach County. Many young people face homelessness due to family conflict, abuse, or rejection—particularly among LGBTQ+ youth—and lack access to affordable housing, mental health care, and basic resources.

For more than two decades, Vita Nova has served as a lifeline for local youth aging out of foster care or facing homelessness, offering safe housing, education, job readiness programs, and life-skills training to help them transition to stable, independent lives.

“Youth homelessness often goes unseen, but it’s happening right here in our own community,” said Jeff DeMario, CEO of Vita Nova. “Many of the young adults we serve are working, going to school, and trying to better their lives—they just need a safe place to call home and someone to believe in them.”

Each year, thousands of young adults across Florida experience homelessness or housing instability, often “couch surfing” or living in unsafe environments. In Palm Beach County alone, Vita Nova serves hundreds of youth ages 18–25 who lack family support or permanent housing.

Raising Awareness and Inspiring Action

Throughout November, Vita Nova is leading initiatives to spotlight this issue and invite community involvement:

  • #TheirStoryOurMission Social Media Campaign: Follow @VitaNovaInc to see weekly stories highlighting the resilience of youth overcoming homelessness.
  • Donation Drive: Vita Nova is collecting gift cards, hygiene items, and non-perishable food to support its housing programs and drop-in center. Donations can also be made through Vita Nova’s Amazon Wish List
  • Items may be delivered to The Spot – the only drop-in center for homeless youth in Palm Beach County – located at 2724 N. Australian Ave., West Palm Beach, FL 33407.

“Awareness is the first step toward change,” added DeMario. “When young people know there’s hope and a network of support, they can move from surviving to thriving.”

Vita Nova invites individuals, businesses, schools, and faith communities to join the movement through donations, volunteerism, or advocacy — to ensure every young person in Palm Beach County has the opportunity to build a brighter, more stable future.

Fast Facts: The Hidden Crisis of Youth Homelessness

  • Fact 1: Vita Nova could see as many as 5 new intakes per week—that’s up to 260 homeless youth each year. Youth homelessness affects all communities, from Palm Beach to Jupiter and Wellington. It can impact any family, at any time.
  • Fact 2: Nearly 15% of households with youth ages 18–25 experience homelessness or housing instability. Causes often stem from family conflict, abuse, neglect, or aging out of foster care—creating long-term risks for mental health and stability.
  • Fact 3: For every $100 increase in median rent, the local homelessness rate rises by 9%. During the COVID-19 pandemic, rents surged by an average of $300—while incomes lagged far behind.

How You Can Help

  • Get Informed: Share what you’ve learned with friends, colleagues, or community groups.
  • Support Vita Nova: Donate funds or essential items like hygiene kits, socks, and food.

Vita Nova, Inc., located in West Palm Beach, Florida, is comprised of three components: the Spot, Housing (The Village), and Independent Living.

Vita Nova means “new life” in Latin and was founded by Father Leo Armbrust, a man who believed that foster youth deserved a better quality of care.  Through the efforts of the Vita Nova team members, its volunteers, and its benefactors, older foster and homeless youth are allowed to lead lives characterized by independence, self-determination, and personal responsibility.

The 6th Annual Starboard Group / United We Rock Toy Drive & Concert

0
Friday, December 5th | 5:00–10:00 PM | Old School Square Amphitheatre, Delray Beach

Delray Beach is about to jingle all the way to the beat of Rock & Roll! South Florida’s favorite holiday tradition is back — bigger, louder, and filled with more heart than ever!

Billy Cunningham, top South Florida real-estate powerhouse and one of the founders of The Starboard Group, a team of highly skilled real estate professionals and entrepreneurs who also founded The Starboard Foundation, joins forces once again with Daniel Hartwell, the visionary concert producer behind United We Rock Foundation and The International Beatles On The Beach Festival.

The Starboard Foundation and United We Rock Foundation have thrown this event as partners for the past 6 years. Together, they’re turning Old School Square Amphitheater into Santa’s Rockin’ Workshop for the 6th Annual Starboard / United We Rock Toy Drive & Concert — a FREE community celebration bringing together the coolest beats and the warmest hearts in all of South Florida!

This unforgettable evening unfolds right beside the giant Delray Beach Christmas Tree, where the lights sparkle, the guitars wail, and the crowd roars in the name of love, unity, and giving.

THE MUSIC

Headlining the night is the world-class band Private Stock, performing their electrifying “Rock and Roll Fantasy” show — a nonstop journey through classic hits by Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Journey, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Heart, AC/DC, Taylor Swift, Celine Dion, and more! They’ve rocked audiences for four U.S. Presidents and at festivals around the world — and now they’re bringing their arena-style power and pure joy to Delray Beach for one incredible night under the stars.

THE MISSION

Everyone is encouraged to bring a NEW, unwrapped toy to place in Santa’s Giant Toy Box at the front of the stage. Every gift helps bring holiday magic to children and families served by these incredible local charities:

• Delray Citizens for Delray Police
• The Boys & Girls Club
• Roots & Wings Foundation
• Eat Better Live Better
• The Achievement Centers for Children & Families
• The EJS Project

Can’t make it in person but still want to help? Monetary donations are gratefully accepted via Venmo and Zelle, helping us transport toys and deliver joy directly to deserving children and families across South Florida. Every dollar fuels the sleigh and spreads the spirit of giving even further!

BE A VIP ELF!

The event is FREE for everyone, but those looking to add a little extra sparkle can grab a limited VIP experience, which includes:

THE SPIRIT

“This is what the holidays are all about,” says co-founder Daniel Hartwell. “Rock & Roll, community, and compassion — bringing people together to make sure every child wakes up smiling on Christmas morning.”

Adds Billy Cunningham, “Each year, we see the mountain of toys grow higher, and the joy it brings to these kids is beyond words. It’s proof that when our community rocks together, we truly make a difference.”

So dust off your Santa hat, lace up your dancing shoes, and get ready to rock around the Christmas tree for a cause that changes lives — because this December, South Florida will shine brighter than ever!
