A Successful Night Of Speed Networking Presented By
The Wellington Chamber of Commerce and
The Small Business RoundTable

IMG_1186-SpeedNetworking

People looking to make new, quick business contacts got what they were looking for Thursday night October 24th at the Wanderers Club in Wellington.  The Wellington Chamber of Commerce – Small Business RoundTable had a good crowd of people who came prepared with business cards and a quick speech in mind to share with others about themselves and their business.  Sponsors included: The Law Offices of Greenstein & Associates; Green Group Studio – The Big Deal Book; Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. – Connor Financial Group; and Dr. G’s Weightloss & Wellness.  Prizes were given out throughout the night and were provided by: Tresses Color Bar Salon; Duffy’s Sports Grill; Whole Foods Market; Park Avenue BBQ Grill; Dr. G’s Weightloss & Wellness; The Estate Settlers; and SharpShooter Marketing Group.

The Emcee for the event was Wellington Chamber’s President, Victor Connor who kept the evening fun and exciting.   To start out, all attendees were standing, wearing a number and holding a score card and pencil. Everyone was told to check off the number (person) on their score card as they spoke to them.  Connor instructed everyone that they had 90 seconds to converse with each person in the group and then, when given the signal to switch, find a new person they hadn’t spoken to yet.  The goal was to speak with everyone in the room using the score card to keep track of things.

Conner did well moving everyone in the room in an organized but sometimes chaotic manner which overall worked well with the participants.  Once coached, everyone appeared proficient at speaking and moving fast – ready to fire off a business card in a quick flip of the wrist.  At the end of the night, people left smiling with new connections and stacks of business cards.

The committee was pleased that the evening was a success and that people enjoyed themselves while making new business contacts.  Dr. Randy Laurich of The Wellness Experience noted that he alone picked up four new patients that night.  The Small Business RoundTable will be offering a Public Speaking workshop November 21st   to help benefit members.  The committee is committed to educating and assisting area businesses to flourish in the community by offering monthly sessions.

Mourning Grace

By Maya Angelou

If today I follow death,
go down its trackless wastes,
salt my tongue on hardened tears
for my precious dear time’s a waste race
along that promised cave
in a headlong
deadlong
haste,
Will you
have
the
grace
to mourn for
me?

AFTER TILLER

When: October 25-27 & 30-31

Where:
Mos’ Art Theatre
700 Park Avenue – Lake Park , FL 33403

Since the assassination of Dr. George Tiller in Kansas in May 2009, there are only four American doctors left who openly provide third-trimester abortions. After Tiller paints a complex, compassionate portrait of these physicians—Dr. LeRoy Carhart, Dr. Warren Hern, Dr. Susan Robinson and Dr. Shelley Sella—who have become the new number-one targets of the anti-abortion movement, yet continue to risk their lives every day to do work that many believe is murder, but which they believe is profoundly important for their patients’ lives. The film weaves together revealing, in-depth interviews with the doctors with intimate vérité scenes from their lives and inside their clinics, where they counsel and care for their anxious, vulnerable patients at an important crossroads in their lives. By sharing the moving stories of several of these patients, After Tiller illuminates the experiences of women who seek late abortions and the reasons why they do so.

Reviews:

“Intimate and heartfelt…Brings an emotional clarity to an issue in which every nuanced turn of phrase has been made politically complicated.”

– Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times

“Whether one is pro-life, pro-choice or without an opinion on the issue, After Tiller provides personal insight into a heart-wrenching, complex reality.”

– Duane Byrge, Hollywood Reporter

“After Tiller presents its extremely divisive and controversial subject matter with remarkable sensitivity.”

– Anthony Kaufman, Screen Daily

Directions to theater:  I-95 to Northlake, exit east about 1 mile.  Just after crossing railroad track, turn right (south) onto 10th St .  In about 1/2 mile turn left (east) onto  Park Avenue .  You will be in downtown Lake Park .  Theater is on the right, at the far end of the last little shopping plaza.

October, 2013 – History of Halloween

0

Jon Lipshaw

By Jon Lipshaw

Halloween is a time most of us enjoy once a year, but not many people actually know the history of how modern day Halloween came to be.  This festive holiday has a darker history that most people are probably unaware of, as they happily celebrate this ghoulish night.  It is also a much anticipated time for retailers since Americans spend $6 billion annually on Halloween, making it the second largest revenue-generating holiday.

Pumpkins at the Farmer's Daughter farm stand in Loxahatchee.
Pumpkins at the Farmer’s Daughter farm stand in Loxahatchee, FL.

It all started 2000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France with a group known as Celts. On the night of October 31st, the Celts celebrated Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year. This was believed to be the last day of harvest before a long dark winter. It was also believed that on this night the dead returned to earth. The Celts also believed that since spirits were more prevalent on this night, it would make it easier for Celtic priests and the Druids to make predictions regarding the future. The prophecies from the Celtic priests and the Druids helped comfort the Celts for the long dark winter to come.  During this night the Druids built large bonfires to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Gods.

By 43 A.D., the Roman Empire had conquered the majority of the Celtic territory.  The Romans also had their version of Halloween. The first day was called Feralia which was a day in late October where the Romans paid respect to the dead. The second day they honored Pomona who was the goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is an apple, which probably correlates with the tradition of bobbing for apples.

Pope Boniface IV wanted a holiday to honor saints and martyrs, so he created All Saints Day on November 1st and All Souls Day on November 2nd. He was likely trying to replace Samhain with a similar but holier holiday. All Saints Day was later renamed All Hallows. October 31st was a day before All Saints Da, so it got renamed again to All Hallows Eve. Then later it was renamed what we call it today – Halloween.

Here is an interesting contrast. The people who celebrated Samhain wore animal skins to bonfires and the people who celebrated All Souls Day were often dressed as Saints or Angels.

Halloween came to America in the late 1800s when the country was flooded with new immigrants. Millions of Irish immigrants who fled the potato famine in 1846 helped make Halloween popular in America.

So are you wondering when trick-or-treating started and how it evolved?  It came from an ancient Celtic tradition of leaving treats outdoors throughout the night on Samhain to appease the spirits. The first time the term “trick-or-treating” was used in North America was in Blackie, Alberta on November 4th 1927.

Modern day Halloween was made popular here in America in 1952 when Walt Disney portrayed the holiday in the cartoon Trick or Treat. In addition, the famous black and white TV show Ozzie and Harriet broadcast an episode where they were besieged by trick-or-treaters.  It appears this tradition caught on well with American children and adults as well.

Here are some interesting facts from around the world about Halloween. Yue Lan or the Festival of the Hungry Ghosts is Hong Kong’s version of Halloween. They celebrate by offering food and and gifts to angry ghosts and lighting fires. Mexico has its own version of Halloween – they call it The Days of the Dead. They celebrate on November 1st and 2nd and on the 2nd , the people dress like ghouls and parade down the streets. In case you’re wondering, the largest pumpkin ever was grown by Norm Craven and it weighed 836 pounds!

Little has changed since Halloween was first made popular here in America but it has evolved a lot since its start 2000 years ago.
