December, 2013 – Seeing the Holidays through the Eyes of a Child

Happy December, 2013!  See the Holidays through the Eyes of a Child.

Here’s what I love about the holidays – looking through the eyes of my children at all of the magical things that start to happen.  We had an “Elf on the Shelf” visit our house last year for the first time, and this year the kids were wishing for the Elf to re-appear even before Thanksgiving.  Their wish came true a few days ago, and it’s been fun to see them talking with the elf. They tell him their Christmas wish list, as they remember things that they would like (or, unfortunately, see aKJSP-DSC_0006 commercial for some toy they just cannot live without).  They also confide in him when they have done something wrong. They figure – he flies home to the North Pole to tell Santa everything anyway, so they might as well come clean and explain themselves.  Their anticipation of Christmas is what it’s all about and counting down the days until the 25th with them is very exciting!

Here’s what I don’t love about the holidays – feeling rushed, accidentally adding to many things to the calendar and having the feeling that things will not get done on time for the holidays.  I’m not really sure what to do about that feeling, except to tell myself to lean toward looking through the eyes of the children (instead of through my adult eyes) at each element of the holidays.  And it will all work out better!  How do you avoid holiday stress and find ways to truly enjoy the holidays?

I want to thank all of our wonderful writers, photographers, advertisers and readers!  This month we have a restaurant review (see Florida Foodie) of one of my favorite new places to go – the Bull McCabe’s Irish Pub and Tap Room. It’s located in the original Wellington Mall, and its Irish fare is very authentic, thanks to the meticulous owner Alan Craig who hails from Ireland himself.  And if you sample anything (like steak, sea scallops or salmon) cooked on the 800-degree volcanic Celtic rock at your table, you will be in for a scrumptious, one-of-a-kind experience.  See more about the talented Celtic band “Fire in the Kitchen” in Cultural Corner this month too.

I had the privilege of interviewing a terrific orthodontist who’s new to the Wellington area, Dr. Brad Santelli, for our “AW Spotlight” story.  Santelli Orthodontics offers state-of-the art technology, which really speeds up the amount of time someone needs to wear braces, for example, and makes the whole process easier these days.  Dr. Santelli and his staff are caring people with excellent reviews from their past patients. If it’s about time for you to look into braces, don’t forget about our “AW Coupons” page for a $500 OFF braces coupon.

This month I want to congratulate my mentor in the magazine business Jon Frangipane for his beautiful Lighthouse Point Magazine, which he was the editor/publisher of for over ten years. Like many of us “writer types,” Jon is a creative person – he’s an accomplished pianist, composer, playwright and tennis player. He’s ready to get back to doing all of the things he loves, after selling his publication. And even though he totally lied to me about how “easy” having a magazine would be, I love him dearly and the readers of Lighthouse Point Magazine will miss him greatly.

We have two terrific contests this month!  The first, running Dec. 1 – 10, is for the always-wonderful prize of a gift certificate to Massage Envy in Wellington (located in the Whole Foods plaza).  The second contest will run in mid-December, and the prize is a party for up to 10 people at Picasso’s Paint-Your-Own Pottery in Lake Worth.  See our “Contest” page for details.

THANKS to all of you for reading!  I hope you had a Happy Hanukkah and Happy Thanksgiving!  And I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!  Wishing you peace and joy,

Krista Martinelli

December, 2013 – Christmas Miracle in the Ghetto

Christmas Miracle in the Ghetto

By Carolyn Devonshire and John Moses Freeman

Peering at the radiating faces of happy families

So much joy emanates from well-to-do children’s sparkling eyes

Wish I could replace the grief, put smiles on the faces of my sons

Without a glimmer of hope even promises of warm meals would be lies

In the brown eyes of my sons, the same eyes their mother, my wife

Sadness the sacrifice, a courageous mother giving life

So great a zest for life she sacrificed to give her sons life

But now greed hath put her seed in peril and my world in strife

No “Help Wanted” signs in the windows of Main Street’s bustling stores

The aroma of fresh bread wafts tauntingly from the bakery

With my hands in pockets, finding not even loose change

Overcome with hunger and jealousy, should I resort to thievery?

Mind reeling, contemplating abating moral principals

Suddenly appear familiar brown eyes amid face so dear

The image of deceased wife, Spanish born eyes filled with tears

Speaking, “Abe, the Lord is gracious, walk until head is clear”

I follow the light in her warm eyes reflecting in glass windows

They lead me down the road to a park at the end of town

Dressed in ragged clothing, a man sits with a smile of peace

Breathing white puffs in frigid air, this gentle soul sees my frown

The message is plain, as my fears begin to clear

There is a greater depth in a soul of love well kept

The night is far spent; I kissed the hand of this gentle man

He smiled sweetly and said, “Lift up heavy head from dread”

I look up to see sun glistening on snow-laden pine boughs

It’s here, Christmas Day, and I’ve left my children alone all night

An ache in my heart compels me to race quickly back through town

Breathlessly, I reach my porch unprepared for a welcome sight

Hearing laughter within, I smell, yams, turkey and ham

I open my door, on the floor, presents piled high as well

Laughing with glee, sons kiss me, sparkle of brown eyes I see

Sparkling brown eyes, of Spanish descent, love is evident

“From where in the world did all this come,” I ask my sons

“Beautiful lady with Spanish brown eyes, stopped at our door

She said a strange thing, as on the floor our gifts were lain,

‘Tell Abe keep the faith; a mother’s love is stronger than the grave.’

Her hugs and kisses, will be greatly missed!  Who was she, Daddy?”

The 5 Agreements…Defining Your Own PathBlancheWilliams

A Few Rules to Live By for Women in Business

By Blanche Williams, M.S.

Defining myself, as opposed to being defined by others, is one of the most difficult challenges I face.           —Carol Moseley-Braun

You are an incomparable masterpiece and wonder of the world, but think about how many times you have been compared to or compared yourself to someone else? If that perception made you feel less than or somehow diminished, then your willingness to define your own path, from a place of esteem and confidence, was taken away from you.  Reclaim and reinforce your personal power to define your path by proclaiming and following these five agreements with yourself:

Agreement #1 – I accept the journey to define my path and claim my individual greatness by defining and designing the masterpiece that is me.

No one has the right or should be given the power to break down your sense of self.  Seeking validation or approval strips away your sense of worthiness and can begin an unhealthy habit of self-doubt.  You don’t need anyone’s permission to be great, to think outside the box or shatter the glass ceiling!  You come from a long line of brilliant, dignified, provocative, dedicated, and loving women.

Agreement #2 – I will follow my heart, my intuition, and my divine inner navigation system.

The dictionary describes self-definition as providing the fundamental nature of one’s identity, character, abilities, and attitudes, and self-determination as free will that establishes one’s own fate or course of action without compulsion.  Taking this level of personal initiative is the next level in leadership and business development.  You must allow yourself to think without boundaries.  To dream big and act bold!

Agreement #3 – I will not ask for approval or permission to tap into my purpose-driven power.

Defining your own path begins with defining yourself. Who are you outside of anyone’s preconceived or biased perception of you, whether individual, familial or societal? It’s often difficult to make this leap of faith because historically women, from all cultures, were defined negatively to suit the misguided desires and insecurities of others.  Yet in the midst of those challenges and often because of them, we flourished. We decided to stay true to our divine destiny and step outside the flawed image portrayed.

Agreement #4 – I will uplift and cheer on my sister’s gifts instead of comparing mine to diminish our collective.

As a sisterhood, we can support your dream if you define it based on who you are and what you have to offer.  We must first remove the desire to compare or be compared to anyone else.  Take the truth of your history with the lessons of your experiences and take your place beside the others. By changing your perspective and reshaping your mindset, you can transform your experience and unlock your unlimited potential and gift of originality.  You can boldly venture into any arena you see fit.

Agreement #5 – I will not allow anyone to separate me from my destined greatness.

Set your own standards and allow your imagination to extend beyond reach.  To do this you will need a renewed strategy, a shifted mindset, and focused self-determination.

Take a different path by deciding to become a trail blazer – confident in your abilities and aware of those who held your dreams on their shoulders.  Your path awaits…

Santelli Orthodontics…Creating Healthy and Beautiful Smiles

By Krista Martinelli

When you meet orthodontist Dr. Brad Santelli, you can tell right away that he truly loves what he does.  When you hear from his patients and see their new smiles, you know right away that he’s good at what he does. “I love having the ability to create a positive change in someone’s life,” he says. “Having a beautiful smile translates into every aspect of a person’s life and gives the person greater confidence!”

IMG_1816S1

Santelli’s own positive attitude carries through to his patients’ experiences.  As one Mom explains, “I finally found a 5-Star orthodontist in South Florida!… I had heard excellent reviews from friends about him before I took my son to him and now I can see why. Wonderful personal attention and care. He makes everyone feel so comfortable and never rushes. He knows what he is doing and his finished work is beautiful.”

With a new office in Wellington (located in Palomino Park) and another office in Boca Raton, Santelli Orthodontics is expanding their practice and now able to see more patients. In Wellington, Dr. Santelli’s office has a beach, surfing theme and is a very bright, welcoming space. The beautiful facility is high-tech as well, with its state-of-the-art equipment and ten iPads loaded with lots of games.

Dr. Santelli enjoys creating beautiful, healthy smiles for his patients.

Santelli Orthodontics is a fully computerized, paperless office, offering the best in digital radiation and orthodontic technology. Dr. Santelli is an elite Invisalign® and Teen Invisalign® provider, ranked in the Top 1% of providers worldwide.  Thanks to the latest in orthodontic technology, teeth can move faster into place, allowing patients to finish with quicker treatment times.  See the video (below) or by going to this link about how Invisalign® works.  http://youtu.be/G5qbMz13B2M</>

Dr. Santelli offers a free consultation or free second opinion.  The average age of patients needing braces is between 8 and 16, although he sees many adult patients too.  Some patients are missing teeth, have teeth that have changed position, suffer from TMJ or simply want to create a nice smile.

One of the keys to making patients feel at ease is having a kind and friendly staff. They show the patient exactly what’s about to happen before it happens. “I have the best staff in the world,” says Dr. Santelli. “They are vivacious and caring!”

IMG_1820
“I have the best staff in the world,” says Dr. Santelli.

When a parent is considering the options, “I often ask myself, ‘what would I do for my own child?’” says Dr. Santelli.  It’s a good rule of thumb and helps when parents are deciding on the best possible orthodontic plan for their children.

There are many different kinds of braces to choose from – metal braces, clear braces, Damon® Clear brackets, Damon Q® braces and Invisalign®.  Read more about these options on the Santelli Orthodontics website. While the metal braces are still widely used, the clear variety of braces is becoming increasingly popular.  Removable braces are also ideal for those who have milder cases of misaligned teeth.

In his office, they are good about taking “before” and “after” photos of each patient’s smile. He posts these on Facebook, with the permission of his patients, in an ongoing album called “Welcome to the braces club!” You can like Santelli Orthodontics on Facebook and then enter in their current contest to win an iPad mini.

Dr. Brad Santelli lives with his wife (who is originally from Brazil) and his 15-month-old son. In his spare time, he enjoys lifting weights, running, playing golf and basketball.

He has known that he would become an orthodontist since he was a Freshman in high school.  “I love what I do!  To me, it’s more satisfying than dentistry. You get to change people’s smiles and change their lives!”

Healthy Lifestyle ~ Healthy Holidays

By Sherri Mraz

Everyday I see people getting more educated on healthy lifestyles. It’s no secret that you are what you eat. It goes much further than that; however, you are what you surround yourself with. If you are always on the run, making deadlines, meetings, and bombarded with noise, you are stressed. Ever had the great pleasure of eating at a yoga retreat center, spa or maybe even on the beach? If so, you will know what I am talking about. Food digests differently in your body depending on your surroundings. Check out the book, The Slow Down Diet: Eating for Pleasure, Energy, and Weight Loss by Marc David. He explains the effects stress has on our body and our waist line.

Below are some tips on being mindful to keep the stress level under control during the holidays.

Keep it simple.  The simpler you make your lists and plans the more productive you will be.  Keep lists to a reasonable size.  Each day add no more than three things to it. Take pride in crossing off the old items.

Make sure you take time to breathe.  Take breaks during the day, sit with a cup of tea or better yet, hot water with lemon in it, the best way to detoxify your body.  Stay away from the constant bombardment of noise; TV, radio, traffic and yes people too.  Have a time of stillness to let your mind have some peace, this will lower your blood pressure and relax your body. You may even look forward to it after a while.

Attend a yoga class to learn the art of stillness along with the benefits of stretching.  Notice when a baby or your pet awakens the first thing they do is stretch.  Take a lesson from them.  It is like the fountain of youth. If you keep your body moving along with breathing exercises you will not get stiff or feel like you are aging.

Join a gym or invest in some good workout DVD’s.  You will be giving yourself the greatest gift of all, good health.  Carve out time for yourself daily.

Remember to drink plenty of water, and choose organic in your food, skincare, and cleaning agents whenever possible.  Not only will your body love you for it, but also the environment will.

Practice portion control. On a scale of one to ten practice eating to a seven. Never feel too full or bloated, it is not natural.  Please leave out the artificial sweeteners, sodas low fat labeled foods.  Food as nature created it is always best.

Enjoy your holidays. Practice the 80/20 rule. Eighty percent of the time you eat organic clean food, exercise and keep mindful. Twenty percent of the time you celebrate and allow yourself treats. The problem most people have is they do the exact opposite. The are mindful only twenty percent of the time and cheat the rest of the eighty percent.

Holidays are celebrations, enjoy the time with family and friends, enjoy the food that your body tolerates. Enjoying tastes means matching your mouth and your body. If you can’t eat gluten for example, why eat the cake if you will suffer later. Pick an indulgence your body tolerates. Need help discovering what foods work best for you, consult a health coach and attend healthy cooking classes. Your body and mind will thank you for it.

Namaste,

December, 2013 – The Bull McCabe’s Irish Pub

The Florida FoodieSaucy Sarah

The Bull McCabe’s Irish Pub & Tap Room

By Saucy Sarah

There is a new Irish pub in Wellington! It’s definitely worth checking out and you might find, as we did, that you’ll want to stay awhile. Located in the original Wellington Mall, the Bull McCabe’s Irish Pub & Tap Room offers an impressive craft beer list and some very authentic and unique Irish menu items. The restaurant is cozy and inviting with a large and friendly outside patio area. When you add in the gracious wait staff, you can easily spend several hours here without hesitation. My party and I ended up staying for three hours the night we went to investigate. We felt right at home from the moment we arrived until almost the entire staff bade us farewell.

Our first stop was the multi-page craft beer menu featuring something for everyone’s taste. This restaurant is a prime place to stop and tour some great local artisan beers. I discovered the “Monk in the Trunk” brewed by local Due South Brewery, which is now in my top five favorite beers. Also, their Due South Carmel is spectacular on a cool night.

Scallops served on a 800-degree volcanic rock hot plate at your table.
Scallops served on a 800-degree volcanic rock hot plate at your table.

The highlight of our meal at Bull McCabe’s was their Celtic Rock cooking experience. A thick, hot slab of volcanic rock, heated to 800 degrees in a special oven, arrives at your table with the meat you have chosen from the menu. Then, you proceed to cut up and cook each slice of chicken or scallop, or a tender filet of beef on the hot rock. Three dipping sauces come side-car for you to try. You also get creamy mashed potatoes and a choice of Celtic corn or Brussels sprouts. Our table tried the large sea scallop appetizer ($13.00), the 8oz Filet ($28.95), and the flat iron steak ($23.95) to cook on the rock. Bull McCabe’s uses only locally sources beef from the Seminole tribe, which raises naturally grass-fed, hormone-free, choice and prime beef. I am a sucker for proprietors who choose to highlight local and sustainable products. The beef was tender and juicy with deep beefy flavors. The massive sea scallops were sweet and succulent. It was a carnivore’s fantasy.  Though none of the entrees needed dipping sauces, I did try them all and found each one to be a nice compliment to the tidbits of rock-cooked beef or scallop. If you want to try out this unique and fun cooking method, please be sure to call ahead and make a reservation to ensure they don’t run out before you get there!

DSC_0607

Some other noteworthy selections: the fish and chips ($15.50) arrives to the table looking like a meal made for three. The piece of fish was as long as my arm and was framed by mahogany wedges of deep-fried potatoes. Another impressive entrée was the Shepherd’s Pie ($13.95). Baked in individual casserole dishes, the Shepherd’s pie is enough to feed two or three people. It was piping hot and well-seasoned, something that this dish seems to lack at most restaurants.

The Bull McCabe's Shepherd's Pie, piping hot and well-seasoned.
The Bull McCabe’s Shepherd’s Pie, piping hot and well-seasoned.

Stuffed to the gills, we could only share one dessert between the six of us. The sweets are all made on site—a big plus in my book—and change daily. That night we had the fresh banana pie. I was happy the pie was not too sweet and tasted like fresh bananas. It was just the right thing to end the night with.

DSC_0614-dessert

So plan a fun night out with friends and cook over a molten-hot, volcanic rock while knocking back a few excellent local brews. There is also some great authentic live Irish music, the “Fire in the Kitchen” band on Friday and Saturday nights.  See this month’s “Cultural Corner” for more information about this accomplished band.

I am sure that The Bull McCabe’s will become a regular hangout spot in your repertoire after just one visit. My dinner guests were already planning to bring new friends back with them on another night. I know I can’t wait to go back again too!
