About Mayacoo Country Club – the first golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus!

More than 40 years ago a group of young Palm Beach business leaders teamed up with Jack Nicklaus and Desmond Muirhead to create a truly great golf course in West Palm Beach.  Mayacoo is where 18 distinctive challenges await players of every skill level.  Here is where brute strength gives way to shot making and course management and you hone your game to its finest edge. The course’s design incorporates both challenge and playability for every skill level.  Mayacoo Lakes was the first effort for Jack Nicklaus and many believe it was his best.

Mayacoo is an 18-hole course that opened in December 1972. The course was restored to its original design and reopened in December 2007 under the watchful eye of Kipp Schulties. The re-mastered course won the coveted 2008 Golf Digest ” America’s Best New Courses-Best New Remodeled Category” Award. A par 71 6,906 yard layout is surrounded by a forest of slash pines, palms and lush vegetation indigenous to South Florida. The beauty of the course stands in its own splendor. Carpet like fairways and manicured greens provide the gateway to some of the most memorable and challenging holes of golf you will find anywhere.   The Clubhouse at Mayacoo Lakes is the center of social activity, offering fine dining in a casually elegant setting.  Facilities include the main dining room, grill room, lounge and an outdoor patio area overlooking the manicured practice facility.

About Young Singers of the Palm Beaches

Young Singers of the Palm Beaches was established by several music educators in Palm Beach County, including Shawn Berry, Michael Yannette and Connie Drosakis. Each of these founders has extensive experience in music for the young voice, and enjoys local and national recognition for their accomplishments. They envisioned a children’s choral organization that would not be constrained by school boundaries, religious affiliations, racial bias, socio-economic barriers, or funding cuts to arts education.

This dream was realized during the summer of 2003. Our first choir season began with 79 singers, in grades 4 through 12, assigned by grade level and ability to 2 choirs. In a decade, Young Singers has grown from this grassroots concept to a viable force in the choral community. We have performed locally, nationally, and internationally. We are in our 11th year as Palm Beach County’s premiere community-based children’s choir, based at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, with approximately 350 singers, in grades 3 through 12, from all parts of Palm Beach County.

In addition to our self-produced Holiday and Spring Concerts, which are held on the main stage of the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, YSPB has also performed locally at the Eissey Theatre, the Flagler Museum, the Borland Center, the Harriet Himmel Theatre, CityPlace, the Preservation Foundation in Palm Beach, nursing homes, libraries, museums and more.

On tour nationally, our children have performed in Boston in the National Festival of the States; in New York City on the stage of Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in the National Festival Children’s Chorus, at The Pacific International Chorus Festival in Eugene, Oregon; and at a cultural exchange in the American Southwest with Native American Tribes.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce presented an informative workshop on Outlook 2013 and Microsoft Office 365 on Wednesday evening, August 21st, at Lake Wellington Professional Centre, 12230 W. Forest Hill Boulevard in Wellington, Florida. The workshop was held in the new Wellington Room which was recently unveiled and included wood floors, new tables and chairs, Wi-Fi and built-in audio/video capabilities. The workshop was instructional, hands on, and focused on familiarizing the attendees with the new Outlook 2013 and Microsoft Office 365; then teaching them how to use these latest Microsoft products on their laptops.

The speaker/instructor for the evening was Dave O’Keefe – Owner/ President of Your Computer Guy (YCG) which is also located the Lake Wellington Professional Centre. He has 15 years of experience in IT and his company is a Microsoft Silver Certified Partner. Regarding Office 365, Dave noted that the service is a paid subscription that is always up to date (no need to buy upgrades and no servers are required), data is saved to a cloud and the service allows access to your content almost anywhere on almost any devise. In addition, there are 25GB email boxes which have a 99.9% uptime, backup, shared calendars plus spam and malware protection. He also reviewed the HD videoconferencing feature and telephone support. Dave covered the updates to Office Standard 2013 which included Excel 2013, Outlook 2013, Power-Point 2013, Word 2013, OneNote 2013 and Publisher 2013.

The workshop covered a lot of territory in a two-hour session. While enjoying fresh fruit and other munchies, the attendees appeared to be engaged and soaking in the new information. Dave went tab by tab opening and explaining functions and how they can be utilized to increase efficiency in offices. There was a significant portion of time at the end dedicated to specific questions and answers plus the hands on application of new methods to make their business and personal lives operate more effectively. Overall, the session was informative, relevant, interactive and well received. Dave did an excellent job explaining and teaching a technical subject.

Palm Beach Zoo Receives National Award for Outstanding Educational Programming

Palm Beach Zoo News

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Palm Beach Zoo has received the national Pinnacle Award for outstanding educational programming through videoconferencing from the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC). Out of hundreds of participating cultural organizations from across the country, the Zoo was one of only 39 organizations that received the coveted national award for the 2012-2013 school year.

“The Palm Beach Zoo is greatly honored to have received the CILC Pinnacle Award in recognition of the quality of our Distance Learning programs,” said Kristen Cytacki, Director of Education and Sustainability for the Zoo. “This award is especially meaningful because it is based on positive evaluations from teachers across the nation whose students participated in our interactive videoconference programs.”

The CILC helps schools by advancing learning through videoconferencing and other collaborative techniques. Pinnacle Awards are presented annually to providers who post top-ranking programs to www.cilc.org for K-12 students or professional development for educators. The awards are based exclusively on feedback from teachers who have used the content in their classrooms, or for their own professional advancement.

“This work has been made possible through the generosity of Mrs. Peggy Brown of Palm Beach,” said Cytacki. “Mrs. Brown funded the Alvin I. Brown Distance Learning Center in memory of her late husband.”

CILC’s Board President, Dr. Pam Lloyd said, “CILC is honored to present this year’s pinnacle awards to the providers that support the CILC mission in assisting schools with advanced learning using collaborative technology like video conferencing.”
The Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC) was established in 1994 as a not-for-profit, specializing in the access to applications and the utilization of video conferencing for live interactive content and professional development, as well as web-based collaborative learning environments for K-12 education. CILC provides consulting expertise in videoconferencing, integration, problem-based learning projects, school-community partnerships and effective techniques for the delivery and development of quality programs.
