August, 2013 – Maraschino Lemonade Pops

Maraschino Lemonade Pops

From Stella’s Kitchen

In our house, we have one person who LOVES maraschino cherries and one who hates them!  So we made these pops two ways – the cherry way and the plain lemonade way*.

  • 1 jar of maraschino cherries
Getting the ice pops ready to go into the freezer.
Getting the ice pops ready to go into the freezer.
  • 8 (3-oz) paper cups (little Dixie cups)
  • 16 oz. Lemonade (can be from a mix or your own)
  • 8 popsicle sticks

Drain the cherries, keeping the juice. Place one whole cherry in each paper cup. Coarsely chop remaining cherries. Add chopped cherries, lemonade and remaining maraschino cherry liquid to blender or food processor.  Blend until smooth. Fill paper cups with mixture, almost to the top.

For fun, you can add jokes or facts on your popsicle sticks ahead of time (with a permanent marker).  Insert the popsicle sticks, one in each cup. Secure with Press n Seal plastic wrap, so that the popsicle stick stays straight up. To serve, peel away the paper cup.

*For the plain lemonade pops, just skip all of this maraschino cherry business.  Freeze your lemonade in cups (almost filled to the top).  Insert the popsicle sticks.  These pops are yummy either way!

Yum! One lemonade pop and one cherry-lemonade pop!
Yum! One lemonade and one cherry-lemonade pop!

August, 2013 – Bless the Broken Road

“Bless the Broken Road”

(Recorded by Rascal Flatts, originally written by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band)

I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn’t see how every sign pointed straight to you

Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

I think about the years I spent just passing through
I’d like to have the time I lost and give it back to you
But you just smile and take my hand
You’ve been there you understand
It’s all part of a grander plan that is coming true.

Now I’m just rolling home
Into my lover’s arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you.

That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you.

July, 2013 – New Extended Hours Sundays at the South FL Science Center and Aquarium

Thanks to popular demand, the new South Florida Science Center and Aquarium has announced extended Sunday hours. Effective immediately, doors will open at 10 a.m. on Sundays, instead of noon.

Formerly the South Florida Science Museum, the new South Florida Science Center and Aquarium has seen tremendous response to its recent 13,000-square-foot transformation.  The new construction expands the former museum’s footprint by 75 percent to showcase a new mission and new exhibit halls  –  including a 3,000-square-foot aquarium, four new Everglades exhibits, NOAA’s Science on a Sphere, a 6,000-square-foot traveling exhibit hall, an impressive new landscaped entry plaza, a new front entry complex, and upgraded visitor amenities.

The mission of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is to open every mind to science through the strategic programming of interactive exhibits, engaging community-based camps and events. Founded in 1959 and formally known as the South Florida Science Museum, the new SFSCA also features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, mini golf and a digital planetarium.

Admission to the South Florida Science Center is $13.50 for adults; seniors 62+ $12.00; and children ages three-12 $10.00, under three years and Museum members are FREE.  The Science Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. On the last Friday of every month, the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium hosts a themed ‘Science Nights’ (formerly known as ‘Nights at the Museum’)– a family friendly opportunity to enjoy extended hours of the Science Center’s typical offerings as well as a chance to view the night sky through the Science Center’s observatory.  Other special events are offered throughout the year.

The South Florida Science Center is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach. Rotary Club of Wellington provides “hands on support” for the Back to Basics Charity

Only weeks into its 2013-2014 year, the Rotary Club of Wellington is alreadyDSCN1382 engaged in its first community service project.  Beverly Perham, the executive director of  “Back to Basics”, a charity the Rotary Club supports asked for some “hands-on” assistance. The Club normally donates money to the charity every year and honors it at its annual holiday luncheon.  This year the club members decided to donate their time and help assemble and package 8000 school uniforms for the “Back to Basics” School Uniform program.  Many club members donated more than 12 hours each at the warehouse providing Beverly with the needed support to complete this project and ensure that the uniforms were ready for distribution. “Back to Basics” annually donates these 8000 school uniforms to underprivileged school children in many schools in South Florida.

“Back to Basics” and Beverly Perham have provided school uniforms to underDSCN1385 privileged children in South Florida for the past 29 years. The mission statement of “Back of Basics” is “to raise the self-esteem of children, which directly relates to their learning, by providing the basic necessities of uniforms, sneakers, socks and underwear”.

Originally, Beverly did all of this work in her own home.  You could imagine how this project probably consumed her.  In 2010, with the help of members of The Rotary Club of Wellington she was able to relocate to a warehouse in Wellington to better complete the work at hand.

Funding for “Back to Basics” is all privately donated and 100% of the money donated goes to the cost of the school uniforms and the other basic items.  The budget for the program is approximately $75,000-$100,000 annually.  The program is funded by many local churches, business, charitable organizations like the Rotary Club of Wellington, and some anonymous donors. Up until this year a very large donor to the program has been the Andy Roddick Foundation.  Because of this loss of funding, the charity is looking for other ways to raise money for its needs.

The program which began in 1984 initially supported only 26 school children.  With the community’s help, private donations, the support over the years from the Rotary Club of Wellington, and the life-long labor of love of Beverly Perham, “Back to Basics” is now serving the underprivileged school children of South Florida with 8000 uniforms and other basic necessities.

For more information on “Back to Basics” or how to get involved with the many future community outreach projects of the Rotary Club of Wellington, please contact Maggie Zeller at maggie.zeller@yahoo.com or (561) 715-9262 or Membership Chair, Jasmine Velez at realtorjasmine@yahoo.com
