FLY ON A MAGIC CARPET AND SEE THE WORLD WITH ALADDIN JR. AT THE MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE!

July 2, 2013 (Jupiter) – This summer, join a fantasy magic carpet ride with Aladdin, Jr. and students who are learning from Broadway’s best at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s summer camp programs!

A full performance of the family-friendly musical will take place on Friday, July 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Jupiter Community High School. Fun for all ages, tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for children.

The show will star students from the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts’ three-week Junior Conservatory summer camp (grades 3-5), in which students learn all aspects of theatre such as acting, dance and voice, culminating in full performances of a musical.

One of the most beloved musical shows of our time, Disney’s Aladdin and the all-powerful genie come to life on stage in this high-flying musical adventure filled with magic, mayhem, and flying carpet rides. Featuring the popular hit songs “A Whole New World” and “Friend Like Me,” Aladdin Jr. is a one-act, high energy theatre musical adapted from the popular animated Disney film, creating a version that’s perfect for the entire family.

Aladdin, Jr. is a triumphant, joyful musical for all ages about celebrating our differences,” said Julie Rowe, the Theatre’s director of education. “It’s fast-paced, the characters are larger than life and it features infectiously fun production numbers, including the thrill of flying through the night sky on a magic carpet.”

Rowe is directing the production, with choreography by Broadway veteran and Conservatory instructor Brian Andrews and music direction by North Palm Beach composer, lyricist and writer John Mercurio.

During camp, Rowe will guide students through the process of auditioning for a Broadway show, a fast-paced rehearsal schedule and the opportunity to showcase all that they’ve learned onstage, complete with costumes, sets, professional lighting and a professional theater orchestra.

“The Junior Conservatory is a wonderful opportunity for local children to have the chance to experience what it’s like to work in professional theatre and perform in a full musical,” Rowe said. “There’s still time to sign up for camp, and we’d like to encourage parents to have their children join us this summer at the Conservatory.”

Other exciting camp options for grades K-12 include the upcoming one-week Dr. Seuss camp (grades K-5), one-week Super Sea Creatures camp (grades 3-5) and a two-week Dance Intensive camp (grades 6-12).

Students will perform Aladdin, Jr. on Friday, July 26, at 7:30 p.m. onstage at Jupiter Community High School’s auditorium, located at 500 Military Trail, Jupiter. Tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for children.

To purchase tickets, call the box office at (561) 575-2223. For more information or to sign up for the Junior Conservatory and other camps, call 561-575-2672 or visit www.jupitertheatre.org/education/camps  for a complete camp schedule.

July, 2013 – Lake Worth History Book Release

New Lake Worth History Book to be Released
at City’s July 4th Centennial Celebration

The Lake Worth Centennial Committee is proud to announce the release of a new publication, Pioneers of Jewell. The 254-page book contains previously unknown stories about our city’s forgotten first settlers during the decades when the community was known as Jewell, prior Lake Worth’s incorporation in 1913.

Pioneers of Jewell will go on sale at the City’s exhibition booth in Bryant Park starting at noon on July 4th as part of the LW 100 Celebration. Author Ted Brownstein will be available to autograph copies from 5 to 6 PM. Rumors have been flying that first pioneer, Fannie James, and the Barefoot Mailman (in costume) may put in an appearance.

In 1885, Samuel and Fannie James, an African American couple, reported to be ex-slaves, fled the increasing racial polarization of Northern and Central Florida for the sparsely settled everglades frontier. They were the first to settle in the area that would later become the City of Lake Worth, arriving with just the clothes on their backs and $50 in their pockets. While local history buffs may have heard their names, until now virtually nothing was known of their doings, character, or relations with others in the Jewell community.  Their story is explored in Pioneers of Jewell in the context of their times. Details of their land dispute with Dr. Harry Stites, their friendship with original Barefoot Mailman Edwin R. Bradley and the quirkiness of hermit Michael Merkle are told for the first time. This motley collection of settlers braved the swamps, the floods, the mosquitos and the isolation to pave the way for later development.

Groundbreaking research reveals…

  • Biographies of more than a dozen previously unknown Jewell pioneers.
  • An in-depth look at the Jameses’ stunning financial success.
  • Investigation of the Jameses’ slave background.
  • The history of the segregated Osborne Colored Addition.
  • Klu Klux Klan activity in Lake Worth during the 1920s.
  • The fate of Jewell and its pioneers.

Pioneers of Jewell also goes on sale at Lake Worth City Hall after July 4th. Proceeds will benefit the Lake Worth Municipal Library.

July, 2013 – PBCHS Project Graduation

383 PBCHS Seniors Celebrate Graduation at Project Graduation.

Graduation day is a celebration and for 383 seniors from Palm Beach Central High School, that celebration lasted until 5:00 a.m.  May 23, 2013, Palm Beach Central’s graduating seniors were treated to an all night party organized by their parents called Project Graduation. Audrey Valentine, PG co-chair explained, “Project Graduation is an all night alcohol and drug free party for graduating seniors.  Parents organize the event with help from teachers and staff.  Money is raised throughout the year to hold the 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. event at Wellington’s Village Park Gymnasiums.”

The event titled “Party in Paradise” had activities all night long.  Seniors could run through giant obstacle courses, test their skills at carnival games, play pool, ping pong, air hockey, and compete on an inflatable twister-like game for 10 people.  Seniors could get a temporary tattoo or have a caricature made of them and their friends. Over 100 volunteers of parents and teachers worked all night to make the event such a huge success.

There was plenty of food and drinks donated by restaurants and businesses in the community. Seniors danced to a DJ until 3:00 a.m. when the laughs began as a hypnotist put 20 seniors under his spell and entertained the crowd.

“This event couldn’t happen without the support from the parents, PBCHS staff and teachers, and the business community,” says Terri Priore, Sponsorship co-chair, “we received over $22,000.00 in cash donations and another $8,000.00 in donations of food and prizes for the seniors.”

A big thank you goes out to our sponsors.  Our Marquee Sponsor was Equestrian Sport Productions, LLC and our Platinum Sponsor was FTI Consulting Great Charity Challenge. Additional sponsors were Gold – Minto Communities, LLC; Wellington Dunkin’ Donuts; The Mall at Wellington Green; and Silver – MedExpress Urgent Care; Lesser, Lesser, Landy & Smith, PLLC; City of Wellington; Buckeye Plumbing Inc.; Priore Family; Tahiti Joe’s Hot Sauces; Wellington Preservation Coalition, Inc.; Armand Professional Services, Inc.; Successful Women’s Mastermind Alliance, and Palms West Hospital.

“Project Graduation kept our seniors safe graduation night with one last chance to be with friends before they start the next chapter in their lives,” Hellen Cook, PG co-chair said, “seeing the seniors dance, play, and laugh with their friends all night was an overwhelming experience that all parents should be involved with.” Anyone interested in more information about Project Graduation 2014 and getting involved as a sponsor or volunteer please contact Hellen Cook at 561-389-5083.

SEAVIEW EYECARE WITH DR. AMANDA WEISS

by Sherri Mraz
“I am so debilitated by age that without the glasses known as spectacles, I would no longer be able to read or write.”

A monk in Pisa, Italy wrote this statement in 1289 A.D., and it is the earliest documented evidence of the existence of eyeglasses. 724 years later, it is still the most common complaint to be voiced in an eye exam.

It is estimated that 45% of the US population over the age of 40 years is

Amanda Weiss, optometrist and owner of SeaView Eyecare in Wellington

far-sighted, meaning they have the same difficulty that the monk in Pisa did in 1289, only now there are iPads and cell phones, and many more people working at desks where near vision is critical.

As much as I hate to admit being over 40, I must say I am all too familiar with these types of vision challenges. It was time to pay SeaView Eyecare a visit. One single step through the front door and I could see that the office provides a relaxing setting and care by patient and friendly professionals.

I met with optometrist and owner Amanda Weiss, who addresses computer vision problems for patients in their 40’s, treats the dry eyes of patients in their 60’s, and evaluates focusing problems for children, in summary providing eye care for patients of all ages. While some people may become apprehensive while visiting a doctor’s office, Dr. Weiss has such a pleasing personality that it would be nearly impossible to feel anything other than relaxed. Dr. Weiss told me that ever since completing her Family Practice Residency in 2005, she has sought to open a practice that provided for the eye care needs of families, in a setting that made patients feel at ease and offered exceptional care. She has done just that, since having opened the office in February of 2013.

Dr. Weiss decided to open in Wellington where her focus has been to provide routine eye care and emergency care for those patients with eye infections and superficial eye injuries. The office carries over 1500 brand name frames and offers the latest products in eyeglass lenses and contact lenses. Dr. Weiss is especially skilled in fitting multifocal contact lenses for those 40-something patients whom have experienced the incredible frustration of blurred reading and even for those who have been unsuccessful on previous occasions with other contact lenses.

Dr. Weiss is originally from the St. Louis area, and after completing her doctorate degree and residency at the Southern College of Optometry and VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee, she relocated to South Florida. In addition to providing routine eye care, Dr Weiss worked in a practice specializing in advanced glaucoma and macular degeneration, participating in clinical trials for new treatments. She also practiced in central Florida where she examined and treated children with vision, eye muscle, and focusing problems.

I asked Dr. Weiss why she chose the practice of optometry. “What fascinates me most is how much information can be obtained about a person’s general health during a dilated eye examination,” stated Dr. Weiss. She went on to say, “High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid disease, multiple sclerosis, lupus, and carotid artery disease all have the potential to affect vision and show signs in the eyes. Many of these conditions do not produce symptoms.” This is the main reason Dr. Weiss recommends an annual exam for patients with these conditions, regardless of whether they are experiencing visual problems. “An eye examination could save your life.”

I asked Dr. Weiss what she loves most about her job. “Probably the impact that I can have on children and their ability to learn and succeed in school. Last week I examined a 7-year-old boy whose family had immigrated from Mexico. He had never worn glasses before, but was struggling in school and having trouble with his vision. When he first looked through his new prescription to read the letters on the chart, he cracked a huge smile and said, ‘I see pretty.’”

”Pretty,” clear, more comfortable, whatever improvements patients would like to see in their vision, Dr. Weiss is an expert in vision, and expresses a true passion for helping patients who seek better vision and assurance of the health of their eyes. The office also provides exams and glasses for children whose families could otherwise not afford to provide for these needs through the Heiken Children’s Vision Program, a referral-based program through the school district.

SeaView Eyecare is open Monday through Saturday with convenient evening and weekend hours in Wellington Green Commons, the Whole Foods Shopping Center. Most insurance plans are accepted. For more information, visit
