The Plaza Theatre Announces Lineup for Spring/Summer 2013

 

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA – South Florida residents and visitors are in for a treat this Spring and Summer as the Plaza Theatre brings a full lineup of shows to their intimate stage. From cabaret shows to staged readings to full productions, there is something for everyone!

 

Kicking off the season will be the spring/early summer cabaret series, opening with Night and Day – The Music of Cole Porter, featuring Leah Sessa and Mike Westrich, with Vic Glazer at the piano. Performances will run on April 8 and April 22 at 7:30 p.m.

 

Being Alive – The Music of George Gershwin, features Mia Matthews and Wayne LeGette, with Eric Alsford at the piano. Performances will be June 17 and July 1, both at 7:30 p.m.

The last cabaret show of the spring/summer series will be I’ve Got Rhythm – The Music of George Gershwin featuring Jeanne Lynn Gray and John Lariviere. The shows will run on June 17and July 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the cabaret shows are $30 each; $75 for the series.

 

New to The Plaza Theatre is An Evening with Guitarist, Billy Rogan, on April 23. Billy Rogan, who is known for his original music that captivates audiences, will perform an incredibly magical and romantic evening of music on the Plaza’s intimate stage.  Joining Billy on stage will be special guest, Chloe Dolandis. Chloe, an upcoming jazz singer whose powerhouse performances are proving she is a force to be reckoned with, will be an extra special treat for show-goers. Tickets for this show are $25.

 

On April 29, the Theatre will present its new play reading series, Fresh Pages. First up will be Can I Really Date a Guy Who Wears a Yarmulke? by Amy Holson-Schwartz. The love story focuses on Eleanor, a smart, savvy young woman whose secular brand of Judaism might include the occasional latke, but definitely does not include God. She meets Aaron, aka Dr. Right. He’s got the brains, the looks, the wit… but wait! He’s also got a serious case of religion. Can Eleanor see past his yarmulke to find love? Can I Really Date a Guy Who Wears a Yarmulke? premiered as part of the 2010 Midtown International Theatre Festival, playing to packed houses at The Beckett at Theatre Row and winning the coveted Producers Award. It will feature Jim Ballard, Julie Kleiner Davis, Gregg Weiner, Deborah L. Sherman, Howard Elfman, and Elizabeth Dimon. Tickets for this reading are $10 per person.

 

Running through May 12, and back again from July 13– September 1, is the smash hit, Waist Watchers The MusicalWritten and produced by Alan Jacobson, Waist Watchers is the tale of four women sharing stories about their battles with aging, weight, dieting, exercise, and their significant others. Directed by Andy Rogow, the 90 minute show stars Missy McArdle as Connie, Shelley Keelor as Cindy, Jeanne Bennett as Cheryl, and Katie Angell Thomas as Carla, and features hit songs like Botox Queen, If I Were A Size Two, The World’s Greatest Ice Cream, I Went To The Buffet Line, and more. Don’t miss your chance to catch this hilarious show, before it heads out on an international tour!

Added to the season lineup of shows this year is an incredible performance by the Plaza Theatre Conservatory, a group of middle and high school students in training at the Theatre. The Conservatory will perform The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on June 1 at 2:00 and 7:30 and June 2 at 2:00 and 6:00. The hilarious tale is one of overachievers’ angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show’s Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. Spelling Bee is directed by Melissa Jacobson, choreographed by Ben Solmor, and music directed by Jim Webber.

 

Next up is 8-track – The Sounds of the 70s, which runs from June 14- July 7, 2013, and will transform the Theatre in to a place of peace, love, and happiness. Created by Rick Seeber, 8-Track is a fast-paced musical performance by a quartet of talented and energetic singers that will have you singing, clapping and dancing along. Enjoy the electric sounds of The Emotions, The Carpenters, La Belle, Barry Manilow, Marvin Gaye, The Doobie Brothers, The Bee Gees, Helen Reddy, K.C. & The Sunshine Band and many more! 8 Track is directed and choreographed by Kevin Black with music directed by Jim Webber.

MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE SEEKS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO PRODUCE HAMLET

 A free ‘summer intensive’ mentorship program offers one-on-one guidance

to produce the Shakespearian classic 

April 2, 2013 (Jupiter) – The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is offering local high school students the chance to produce a thrilling Shakespearian drama.

Under the guidance of industry professionals at Florida’s largest award-winning professional regional theatre, the Theatre is inviting high school students to apply to be part of a free summer mentorship program to produce William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The show will take place Saturday, August 24, and will be centrally staged “in the round” at Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta.

One of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, Hamlet follows Prince Hamlet of Denmark as he struggles with the death of his father and a ghostly visit, then sets out on a quest for truth, justice and ultimately revenge. Hamlet’s journey reminds us all “to thine own self be true.”

“Our students will be producing a dynamic, high-energy adaptation of one of the most powerful and important dramas in the English language, as adapted by T. Scott Wooten, award-winning Florida playwright and director,” said Julie Rowe, director of education for the Theatre.

Known as the Youth Artists’ Chair, the project aligns high school students with individual Theatre staff members for one-on-one mentoring and guidance during the creation process of the show.

Applicants for the project will be interviewed and chosen by a committee. Winning students will then take on specific roles throughout the summer months that include producer, director, set designer, costume designer, lighting designer, sound designer, properties designer, stage manager, assistant stage manager, marketing, press relations, development, carpentry, run crew, wardrobe and electrics. The students will then lead three weeks of rehearsals before mounting the show on stage.

“This project is an integral part of our Theatre’s community outreach and mission statement, which is to entertain, educate and inspire our community,” said the Theatre’s producing artistic director, Andrew Kato. “We feel energized and fortunate to have this opportunity to mentor the next generation of theatre’s leaders, and we are excited to be showcasing a new adaptation of Hamlet by T. Scott Wooten.”

Those chosen for the role of director and producer will also assist in casting the show’s young performers. With casting open for local students ages 13-18, open auditions for the show will be held Saturday, April 27, during the Theatre’s annual First Step to Stardom audition day at Jupiter Community Center (a day which also includes opportunities to audition for three other shows: Annie, The King and I and Through The Looking Glass).

Palm Beach Photographic Center  Announces FOTOcamp for Kids 2013

Three Sessions Planned this Summer for

Children & Teens, Ages 9 to 17

(West Palm Beach, FL – March 28, 2013)  Fatima NeJame, president and chief executive officer of the world renowned Palm Beach Photographic Centre (PBPC), today announced that this summer the nonprofit organization will be offering three age appropriate FOTOcamps for children and teens.

 

FOTOcamp for Kids

+ June 10-22  /  9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

+ July 8-19  /  9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

+ July 22 – August 2  /  9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For ages 9-17

 

“FOTOcamp is for anyone between the ages of 6 and 17 that has an interest in photography and/or computers, and who are inquisitive and like adventure,” says NeJame.  “It is the perfect opportunity for youngsters and teens to gain knowledge in all areas of photography, beginning with the basics of picture-taking using SLR digital cameras and progressing to state-of the-art digital imaging, at each participant’s own rate of speed.”

 

“FOTOcamp is my favorite time of the year,” she adds. “I enjoy seeing the amazing images the kids come back with from their field trips, and I love to see their reactions when working in a real studio.”

 

FOTOcamp students are grouped by their level of experience, from beginner to advanced in each of three 2-week summer sessions. Students are each issued a digital SLR Camera and while exploring lens choices, lighting, and composition of photographs they will learn about photography and digital imaging, in a fun and fact-filled environment. Sessions in the computer lab will expose them to downloading images to the computer, saving and renaming files, burning CDs, and creating slide shows.

 

In addition, using Adobe Photoshop and Elements, they will learn image adjustment techniques such as color correction, compositing images, adjustment layers and layer masks and other digital imaging technology. The computer lab is set up so that each student has access to a computer ensuring the ultimate hands-on experience. Location shooting and photographic assignments give them the opportunity to practice their skills while acquiring new images.

 

Based at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre in downtown West Palm Beach, all sessions of FOTOcamp will include a professional instructor and an assistant, with opportunities for both individualized and group critiques for each student.

 

The culmination of all three sessions of FOTOcamp for Kids will be a special exhibition of photos taken by the young students. At the exhibition’s opening in August, one talented FOTOcamper will be named Student of the Year and receive a free SLR Digital camera.

 

The cost to attend one of the three two-week session of FOTOcamp for Kids is only $695 for Photo Centre members and $745 for nonmembers.  This covers 10 6-hour sessions and includes use of digital SLR Cameras, transportation and admission fees for the fieldtrips, t-shirts, prints, etc.

Now running through June 1 at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre is FLORIDA WILDLIFE CORRIDOR EXPEDITION: The Exhibition by Carlton Ward, Jr. In 2012, the photographer and explorer led a small team through a 100-day, 1,000-mile trek — traveling by kayak, mountain bike, horse and by foot — from Everglades National Park north to Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in southern Georgia.  The exhibition is the legacy of that journey.  More than 50 large photographs and maps document the landscape, flora and fauna of Florida’s interior and illustrate the interconnected, natural corridor that should be preserved for wildlife and future generations.

LOCAL RESIDENTS TO MAKE AN IMPACT ON JEWISH COMMUNITY

Gifts to Federation’s 2013 Annual Campaign do so much for so many in the greater Palm Beaches, in Israel and overseas. We feed the hungry, help the unemployed, provide crucial support for families with special needs, and so much more.

Alzheimer’s Caregiving Tips for Dealing with Aggressive Behavior Issued by National Institute on Aging

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, has recently issued a tipsheet for Alzheimer’s caregivers on Coping with Agitation and Aggression.

As the tipsheet points out, agitation and aggressive behavior are common manifestations of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Coping with these behaviors in an effective and informed way is a key concern for family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer’s.
 

Focus First on Finding and Eliminating the Cause of the Behavior

“Most of the time, agitation and aggression happen for a reason,” the NIA explains. “When they happen, try to find the cause. If you deal with the causes, the behavior may stop,” the NIA tipsheet counsels.

Some examples of common causes for aggressive behavior or agitation in a person with Alzheimers, include:

  • “Pain, depression, or stress
  • Too little rest or sleep
  • Constipation
  • Soiled underwear or diaper
  • Sudden change in a well-known place, routine, or person
  • A feeling of loss—for example, the person may miss the freedom to drive
  • Too much noise or confusion or too many people in the room
  • Being pushed by others to do something—for example, to bathe or to remember events or people—when Alzheimer’s has made the activity very hard or impossible
  • Feeling lonely and not having enough contact with other people
  • Interaction of medicines”

The NIA advises the caregiver to look for signs of aggression or agitation early. When such behavior appears, focus first on trying to find and eliminate the cause of the behavior before it worsens.

“A doctor may be able to help. He or she can give the person a medical exam to find any problems that may cause agitation and aggression. Also, ask the doctor if medicine is needed to prevent or reduce agitation or aggression,” the NIA advises.

Tips for Coping with Agitation and Aggression in a Person with Alzheimer’s

Here are the NIA’s tips for the caregiver on how to deal with agitation and aggressive behavior of your loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease:

  • “Reassure the person. Speak calmly. Listen to his or her concerns and frustrations. Try to show that you understand if the person is angry or fearful.
  • Allow the person to keep as much control in his or her life as possible.
  • Coping with changes is hard for someone with Alzheimer’s. Try to keep a routine, such as bathing, dressing, and eating at the same time each day.
  • Build quiet times into the day, along with activities.
  • Keep well-loved objects and photographs around the house to help the person feel more secure.
  • Try gentle touching, soothing music, reading, or walks.
  • Reduce noise, clutter, or the number of people in the room.
  • Try to distract the person with a favorite snack, object, or activity.
  • Limit the amount of caffeine, sugar, and “junk food” the person drinks and eats.
  • Slow down and try to relax if you think your own worries may be affecting the person with Alzheimer’s.
  • Try to find a way to take a break from caregiving.”

Safety Concerns

Finally, the NIA warns that safety concerns must take priority. “When the person is aggressive, protect yourself and others.”

“If you have to, stay at a safe distance from the person until the behavior stops. Also try to protect the person from hurting himself or herself,” the NIA’s tipsheet concludes.

Camp Oasis is the Place for Fun, Friends and Support

Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America Hosts Summer Camp for Children with Digestive Diseases

 

South Florida – March 27, 2013 Dealing with a disease, especially a digestive disease, is never easy. It is especially difficult when you are a child or teenager. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) can help to alleviate some of that stress,though! With CCFA’s fun-filled summer program, Camp Oasis, specifically for any child with medically stable Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, campers can enjoy incredible activities with people who truly understand them.   

 

The week-long sleep away camp is jam packed with fun such as swimming, boating, and fishing, as well as visual and performing arts, special events, team sports, and outdoor adventures. It is a safe environment where children are not defined by their illness, but instead are encouraged to try new things, make life-long friendships and have the time of their lives.

 

Camp Oasis will be held at Camp Will-a-Way, located in Winder, Georgia from July 14 through July 19, 2013. The camp is staffed with 24-hour on site medical supervision by healthcare professionals, as well as dedicated counselors, many of whom have IBD, to ensure the best possible care for campers while they are away from home. To be eligible for Camp Oasis, campers must be in grades 2 through 10 in 2013. Leaders in training must be in grade 11 – 12. Those interested in volunteering must be at least 19 years old, and meet additional requirements.

Applications are due by May 15, and space is limited. There is a $25 non-refundable application fee and $250 attendance fee. Parents are encouraged to apply online at www.ccfa.org/camps or contact 561-218-2929 for a hard copy of the application.

Arthur R. Marshall Foundation for the Everglades Adds Fredda Butowsky & Toni Mastrullo to Advisory Council

 

(Lake Worth, FL – March 25, 2013)  Nancy Marshall, President of the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation for the Everglades, which champions the restoration and preservation of the historic River of Grass ecosystem, today announced the addition of Fredda Butowsky and Toni Mastrullo to the nonprofit organization’s 25-person Advisory Council.

Fredda Butowsky joins the Advisory Council after serving as the organization’s Office Administrator over the last year.  She brings more than two decades of experience as a legal secretary, office manager and administrator, and has been a resident of Palm Beach County since 1997. Ms. Butowsky also serves as a Docent at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach and is on the screening committee for the Jewish Film Festival. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Fordham University where she earned a degree in Psychology, she is a stepmother of four and has eight grandchildren.
